SELECTED JUDGMENTS

I'm not nearly as knowledgable about rank-and-file players and their past SP performances, head-to-heads, surface preferences, coaching situations, injury updates, astrology charts, deals with the devil, and anything else that might affect their AO prospects. So feel free to chime in with your own devastating assessments.

Fernandez - Awww, thank you! You believe in me! I'd like to thank the Academy... Oh, wait, you're just trying to suck up to the contest administrator! Actually, this looks like the classic "last safe time to pick her" strategy. Gets Parks next then likely Gauff. Solid choice. (And she's already though, so you got the benefit of sleeping easy, too.)

Krejcikova - Way too soon. Her next round is soft and she's in Jabeur's section of the draw. You're going all in on Alexandrova to advance from there, huh?

Sakkari - :o

Dolehide - Plays a qualifier, who just won three matches. On the bright side, she had that great run to the final of Guadalajara last fall. On the scary side, she hasn't won a main-draw match in a Slam since 2018.

B. Fruhvirtova - There were safer choices, but I like the strategy of picking the match right next to a title favorite. Classic.

Bektas - Why aren't we friends, Lokomotiv Lemnos? Betkas lives in my hometown, but even I didn't have the nerve or loyalty to pick her.

Cornet - For old time's sake? Or because you've never heard of her opponent, Timofeeva?

by dave g I like your "SELECTED JUDGEMENTS"

by ashkor87 First day, I always like to play safe ..and Sakkari is someone I don't expect to see in week 2 but she is good, so won't lose to random players...that was my thinking anyhow

by karlovicfanclub My instinct was to pick Fernandez, but I got too cute and picked Wang instead. Good luck to the rest of you going forward.

by meganfernandez Is the contest admin fired if they go out on the first day? :x

by ponchi101 You get a promotion because it obviously shows a lot of integrity because YOU COULD HAVE CHANGED YOUR PICK!!!! AFTERWARDS!!! :P
But you get free drinks at the LL ;)

ANOTHER rookie contest-admin mistake.

by ashkor87 9 people picked against the #1 junior in the world! Who is also the reigning AO junior champion..these juniors just don't get respect!!

by ponchi101 Jumping from the juniors to the pros is not easy. And, besides, the whole purpose if to pick a winner, not show respect ;)

Although not the match I picked, I'm guessing there are at least 9 people other than myself who don't know who the defending junior or #1 junior player in the world is :D I'm doing well just keeping up with the main tour!

Well, they didn't pick a winner, did they?! I am referring to Korneeva of course..everyone raves about Andreeva but Korneeva is ranked even higher, AND she won both the French and AO last year..she is very very good .

I'm one of the 9, and had I known who Korneeva was, I would have felt even better about the pick!

by ashkor87 it is, of course, difficult to transition from Juniors to seniors but some people have done it - for instance, Swiatek is a junior Wimbledon champion. it takes a about 2-3 years normally.. btw, even Prizmic, who pushed Djokovic to 4 sets yesterday, is the reigning FO champion in juniors.. point is, these junior champs are worth keeping an eye on..

SELECTED REACTIONS
Full disclosure - I'm writing these after knowing the results. And after two weeks of late nights watching tennis from the US, I'm a zombie. Plus, I'm already out of the pool, so what do I know? If you want expert, well-reasoned opinions, petition for JT Continental to come back to this role.

Mertens - the SP gods smiled upon you with this no-brainer pick that ended the best way possible, in a retirement. You will pay later. I'm sorry. (Seriously, this former semifinalist/Hobart finalist is a tough out and might make a run. She's in Sakkari's and BHM's section. I like Mertens' chances to make the quarters vs Gauff.)

Hunter - You people watch too much tennis if you knew this was a safe pick. Is your family aware?

Kostyuk - Solid pick, in retrospect. For me, it's one of the 90% of matches that fall into "should win but who the hell knows" territory of SP-istan. So many matches feel like toss-ups in an SP. We've seen the mighty fall and the weak triumph too many times, reminding us that no one is actually weak in pro tennis and the mighty are often false gods, separated from the scrubs by nothing more than their mood that day. But anyway, nice job.

Potapova - Ah, the classic "low seed versus a sub-100 player" situation. Maybe you remembered that Potapova pushed Serena in Melbourne one time. Did you also remember that she double-faulted five times in one game trying to serve out the first set? (I didn't - I looked it up.)

Paolini - This was going to be my Day 2 pick if I had survived. So you're in bad company here, as I clearly don't know what I am doing. Your SP days are numbered. I'm sorry. :) Seriously, solid pick. I don't watch her very much but caught a little in her win over Kerber at the the United Cup. And she pushed Garcia in a tight three-setter there. She's playing well.

Saville - Seemed like a good pick if it worked. A bit risky, but she just won three matches in Hobart and played Mertens tight in the semi. I don't blame you. I like a risk. But we are both out of the SP, so the joke's on us.

Badosa - What were you thinking? The scoreline vs Townsend surprised me. It was Badosa's first match since Wimbledon. Seriously, I want to know what you were thinking. :)

Alexandrova - The heart-attack pick today. Siegemund played great in the United Cup. And she is just a tough competitor. This was a 50/50 match for me. But Alexandrova had match points, so you weren't far off. Just too close to call for a R1 SP. Curious who your backup pick was.

Tomova - I don't know you, ckelsall34, but I want to, and I admire you, and are you related to Tomova or something? Do you only pick Bulgarians? Or did you know she just beat Kayla Day, her opponent, in Hobart? The three-set scoreline in Hobart would have given me pause. Tomova got into Hobart as a LL, not exactly a flying start to the season. She took a set off Navarro but she also lost to someone named Julia Reira in Brisbane the week before. How did you bring yourself to type T-O-M-O-V-A???

Vekic - risky. You evidently aren't a scholar of Ashkor's court-speed posts on TAT.

Vondrousova - I would have been nervous picking her against Yastrameska, who just won three matches in qualifying. I have no clue how Vondrousova matches up against a big hitter on a medium-fast court, but Yastrameska can hit anyone off the court on a good day, and qualifiers are usually in form.

I considered Vondrousova, because, well, she did win Wimbledon last year. But picking a #7 seed so early seemed wrong. Plus her tattoos give me the creeps.

Haha! One of the weirder reasons for staying alive in an SP, but i love it.

meganfernandez wrote: Mon Jan 15, 2024 6:28 pm Hunter - You people watch too much tennis if you knew this was a safe pick. Is your family aware?
For me it was more about the fact she was playing Errani. I thought Errani retired years ago to be honest. Yes, Errani is ranked higher, but Hunter, out of qualifying with 3 match wins, was a better choice over Errani, ranked 101. Was it a bit risky? Maybe. But I tend to try not to overthink my SP picks (explains my day 1 exit on the ATP side) and this was the one that looked good to me.

SELECTED REACTIONS

Burel: She's on the upswing, having won her first title (a 125) in December and up to a career-high ranking, which is about 600 spots above her opponent's ranking. I assume Krunic is playing with a protected ranking. Burel should win, but the thing is, she also might beat Pegula in the next round. Overall, solid pick.

Cirstea: We have all been knocked out by Cirstea at some point, right? But it's hard to swear her off. She is a R64, R32 career specialist - and also 2023 US Open quarterfinalist, beating Rybakina and Bencic. If that Cirstea shows up, so will you on Day 5.

Zhu:
For a seeded player, I know nothing about her. She beat Azarenka at the US Open last year, though, and has a winning record this year! And she made the fourth round here last year, losing to... Azarenka. Plays Dodin, who won a lot of ITF matches last fall and might be on a confidence high. Guessing this pick was rated DO - don't overthink.

Azarenka: R1 vs Giorgi is riskier than a projected R2 versus Minnen or Tauson. Should get through but not the path of least resistance. Makes me think that I'd love to see someone play a WTA SP picking only Slam winners and finalists.

Boulter: I like her to win - and possibly upset Zheng in the next round and maybe even make the quarters in Pegula's section. All because I saw her play a couple games in the United Cup and was seriously impressed. But for today, you're safe.

Navarro: Too early. Did you see her play at all in Hobart? The improvement is insane. The only player to beat her this year is Gauff. Navarro will make the fourth round and maybe quarters, where she'd have a good chance vs Svitolina. But you will survive Day 4.

Collins: Imagine picking a recent finalist to beat a former champion in round 1! Do you also fight bears? Do you like polar plunges? It might work out - after all, Kerber let herself get bageled by Sakkari at the United Cup - but Collins isn't in the business of winning matches these days. Apropos of nothing, Collins is wearing blousy pink ruffled shorts. I sewed a pair like this in home-ec class in 1986.

Martic: Plays Tomljanovic in front of a hostile crowd. You've been burned too many times by Cirstea, I guess, and sought refuge here.

Stephens, Trevisan, Kasatkina, Cocciaretto - Such good picks that they were done and on the massage table before I posted this.

meganfernandez wrote: Tue Jan 16, 2024 4:12 am Martic: Plays Tomljanovic in front of a hostile crowd. You've been burned too many times by Cirstea, I guess, and sought refuge here.
Well, yes, I HAVE been burned by Cirstea.

And yes, Tomljanovic will be the crowd favorite.

But...Tomljanovic didn't play for nearly a year from injury. She did win a 125 back in November, but during the United Cup she went 1-3, with her win against a player ranked 180. In theory, Martic should have the edge. And I don't expect either one to advance any farther.

Could this pick go very wrong? Sure. But there were others I didn't want to pick because it was too early (Azarenka for 1) or because I wasn't convinced how they would come out and play. (Let's be honest, we never know what Sloane Stephens will do these days for example.)

I've been enjoying your comments. I was bounced out from both the WTA and ATP pools today, so reading critiques of everyone's picks will be the extent of my participation going forward. Thanks for the laughs.
I"m glad my completely baseless options have some value to you. :) Thanks for reading and playing!

by texasniteowl Well, my Martic-Tomljanovic match is finally in session. 5-5 1st set. I can only score watch since ESPN is running Alcaraz-Gasquet.

No ESPN Plus? Ajla just hit an amazing, dipping crosscourt passing shot to get one of the 2 breaks back in the second. She has some momentum and Martic is making more errors now. I think Ajla just won 6 of the last 7 points. Both players have only two holds between them in the 2nd set, I think.

Sorry! Rule of SP is to not talk about the match until it's over. Strong comeback by Ajla from 1-4 in the third, 2 breaks. Have to believe the crowd helped.

by texasniteowl And I'm out. Martic was up 4-1 in the 3rd but Tomljanovic came back and won 6-4.

Used to have the same problem until I switched from cable TV to streaming. Currently loving the power to watch any of the ongoing matches I want.

We use YoutubeTV plus other subs. Problem is keeping the number of subs down at any one time. Currently have Prime and Netflix and Hulu/Disney (but not ESPN+) on top of yttv. Then other stuff gets rotated in for a month or two at a time to binge particular things. Example, in a couple weeks I'll have to do Apple+ for a month to watch Masters of the Air. We had Paramount for a couple things for a while. Starz for a month for Outlander. It can easily get to be nuts! Still...if I really really wanted I could add ESPN+ for a month.

Exactly what I was going to say - your comments are very fun to read, and, well, I would say you have a critical fashion eye but you'd have to be blind, or Ostapenko, to deny the hideousness of Danielle's romper.

by meganfernandez Day 4 Summary - 59 of you went to battle today, and you left no one behind without a pick. God's speed.

Wozniacki -14
Fernandez - 12
Garcia - 7
Tsurenko - 6
Sakkari - 5
Mertens - 4
Haddad Maia - 3
Juvan - 2
Pavlyuchenkova - 2
Anisimova - 1
Jabeur - 1
Krejckkova - 1
Rakhimova - 1

FULL REACTIONS:
Remember. I was out on Day 1. I am in no position to judge. But I get to anyway.

Wozniacki - you'll sail through, but she is in a soft section where I'd take her over both BHM and Sakkari, I think. I'm betting on a 2017 Featherweight Flashback, Mertens vs Wozniakic, for a spot in the quarters.

Fernandez - You're golden if she wins because she will get Coco'd in the next round, but I predict a close match, like 60/40. (With no evidence, like a head-to-head or ever having seen Parks play a full match.) Parks is only ranked a couple spots behind Leylah. This isn't a gimme.

Garcia - You could have played her in the next round, but also, she could beat Gauff. Yes, I said it. Gauff is fantastic but she isn't unbeatable by any means. Garcia appears to be in great form again. If you're playing for the Updated thread, solid pick. If you're playing for glory, you have to hold on to these cards.

Tsurenko - I have no clue. I hope you do. By ranking, she should beat Masarova and then lose next round to Sabalenka. if you know enough to feel good about this pick, it's a smart one.

Sakkari - It is possible to win a SP without ever taking this risk, you know. :) But odds are she will win, and I don't expect her to live up to her seeding. I like Mertens to beat Sakkari if they both get through. I should respect Sakkari more. I'm just never surprised when she loses.

Mertens - too early. Is this the "last safe time to pick her" move?

Haddad Maia - solid pick and I think Wozniacki might beat her, so I can get behind this. Which is bad news for you because I am dreadful at WTA SPs.

Juvan - Remember when she almost did something special about 5 or 6 years ago, then got hurt? That, and that she is Iga's close friend, is the extent of my knowledge about Juvan. I know she was a touted prospect and has loads of talent. This is probably a savvy pick.

Pavs - A toss-up considering Badosa won so easily in the first round, and then no idea if Anisimova can keep up her good form in the next round, Bit of a wild shot but could pay off.

Anisimova - I think she will win, but might go another round, too. And then it could get interesting in Sabalenka's section. Remember when Sabalenka was the red-hot pick to win the 2019 AO after blazing through the summer and fall of 2018? All the experts were picking her to break out here. She lost in the third round to Anisimova, 3 and 2.

Jabeur - I think Jabeur will live to fight another day on clay and at Wimbledon. I don't think she is irreparably damaged from last year, as some do. And she looked good in the first two rounds. But Andreeva is dangerous, and she just bageled the first set.

Krejcikova - I like this pick. Siegemund likely in the next round, and she is at her most honey-badgery right now. I wouldn't want to pick Krejcikova then. Good time to use her.

Rakhimova - Who? Is this the mysterious "Other" Ponchi is always talking about? Mr_socko, care to explain? She isn't ranked much higher than her opponent.

Good luck, everyone.

At least 14 other people were as wrong as I was. First bandwagon crash of the tournament.

She sailed to a big lead then she got the Feeva. The 20-year-old played gutsy tennis. Caro wasn't sharp at the end. She had 15-40 to get back on serve in the third and missed two bread-and-butter backhands down the line. Stubbs was stunned.

Me, too, and I never thought I'd call Wozniacki a favorite. I didn't like her defensive style before she retired. now I appreciate it. Bummed for you, the tournament, and the 14 victims today.

Yeah, we could! Se used to have 300-some people play the pool. Now it's 100-some, so that's one reason only 12 are still alive on Day 5. But we didn't have a bandwagon crash until today, and it was pretty small.

I never sniff the second week of a WTA SP. They are so hard. But it also makes the WTA fun to watch. it's not predictable and we get to see new players have big results.

Not coming down on you, but to explain.
Our parser picks your posts in two fashions:
1. Your LAST post of the topic as long as it is
2. Less than 100 characters long.

You posted a last comment that was complimentary of Megan's job, but it was less than 100 characters long. So, your Mertens post was lost in the parsing.
Why 100 characters? Because some of our members post via Tapatalk, and those posts come with a tag (posted from my phone via Tapatalk) that makes them about 80-90 characters long. So, we still need to pick those posts and THEN filter the gibberish that gets attached by Tapatalk.
Not picking on you, Naughty. But that is the reason we tell our members: post ONLY the last name. Our contest staff do their best, but they need to still do a lot of manual quality control.

Your LAST post IN THAT TOPIC was your post complementing Megan. As it was less than 100 characters, that was what was recorded. The post with your pick was before that.
I wrote the code for the parser so that, if a player changed her mind, and posted a new pick, that post would be the one selected by the parser would be the last one. That makes it easier for the contest staff.
Anyway, rejoice! You are in the updated topic. Hell of a job
