My comments:

Van de Zandschulp 45 He should win, and he is slated to play Rafa in Round 3, so there appears to be no reason to save him. However, if Rafa's foot give him enough problems that he loses are withdraws before Round 3, you may rue this pick.
Khachanov 17 He should win this round and has a good chance to lose in Round 3. Good pick.
Karatsev 14 He has not done well this year, and clay does not appear to be a good surface for him. You may be in trouble.
Schwartzman 10 He should win. I would hate to have to pick a Round 3 match between hi and Dimitrov. Good pick.
Davidvich Fokina 9 He should win. The question is whether or not he beats Zverev in Round 3. If he does, you might wish you had him later.
Isner 9 While Isner did well in Houston, I don't consider him to be a clay-courter. I don't know his opponent well enough to predict this match.
Brooksby 8 Cuevas, his opponent, is a pretty good player, but not near his peak. I really don't know enough to predict this match.
Fognini 8 Fognini has not been playing up to his past level, but still has a good chance to win. This might turn into a tougher match than you would normally expect.
Zapata Miralles 4 You're brave. You a picking a qualifier to beat a wildcard. I don't know either of these two players to be able to make a prediction.
Coric 3 He has been struggling this year. You might be in trouble.
Dimitrov 3 He should win. He is slated to play Schwartzman in Round 3, but I think he will win that match. But if he does, he will then have to play Djokovic. Good pick.
Kudla 3 He is playing a qualifier. I don't know him or his opponent enough to make a prediction.
Munar 2 I don't know Munar or Altmaier enough to predict who will win, but I think it will probably be a tough match.
Ramos 3 Kokkinakis has been playing better this year. You could be in trouble.
Thiem 3 Thiem has not won a match this year. I think you are in for more trouble than you are expecting.
Zverev 3 OUCH!! What a vote of no-confidence. He is slated to play Davidvich Fokina in Round 3. I am translating this as you are thinking that he will lose that match. I think you are right.
Auger Aliassime 2 He will win. But you might be using him too early.
Dellien 2 He is playing Thiem, who has not won a match this year. I have not been able to watch any tennis to be able to determine if Thiem has been improving enough to win this match. Tough call.

by ponchi101 The Dellien pickers were brave, and were rewarded. An easy win, peace of mind early on Sunday morning, and Dellien will not go much farther. Excellent choice.

That is due to a problem with the editor. If I take a little time, the cursor will move back to the beginning of the line and erase stuff that I have written, without me noticing it. I do remember typing something about picking a qualifier versus a wildcard being a dangerous idea.

PLEASE. You think those of us who picked Van de Zandschulp were concerning ourselves with Rafa and his foot? I mean, "Van de Zandschulp" is the sound we all make whenever we clear our throats.

We got through even with our picking someone named "Van de Zandschulp". We of the "Van de Zandschulp" Gang remain pleased. And we will not be rue'd. :gorgeous:

by ponchi101 BVDZ is simply the well established tradition of "I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY don't want to lose on the first day".
Not that he is fail safe and with a bandwagon to carry, certain dread is expected, but... as nelslus says, is to avoid choking...

True. But he is a two time finalist, and not an old man. Those slumps come to an end. I am sure they factored that one in their decision but, to me, still, that took some cojones to do.

Cilic 29 He should win, but you might want him later on.
Kemanovic 12 This should be a good pick. I just don't know enough about Etcheverry to be sure.
Korda 12 Millman is fairly good for a non-seeded player. Korda should win, but the match might be closer than you like.
Norrie 12 He should win. I don't know anything about Guinard.
Fucsovics 9 He should win. If he does, you will have done a good job of saving your options for later in the tournament.
McDonald 8 If he wasn't playing a qualifier, I would say this is a bad pick. But you have a decent chance of making it through.
Frtiz 5 Even though he is seeded, I don't see Fritz as a clay court player. However, he is playing a qualifier, so he has a decent chance.
Baez 3 Lajovic is a decent player for non-seeded players. I think you might be in for a rough ride.
Basilashvili 3 He is playing Cressey, who likes to serve-and-volley, which historically doesn't work very well on clay.
Coria 2 I think this is going to be a tough match. It is so close that I would stay away from it. Note, we have someone picking his opponent.
Evans 2 I don't think of Evans as a clay court player. You could be in trouble.
Gasquet 2 He is just coming back from injury, but I think he has won a couple of matches. I don't know how he will fare against Harris.
Wawrinka 2 He is also just coming back from injury, but I don't remember him winning a match. So, I have no clue how he is going to do.
Ivashka 1 Are you picking pro-Ivashka, of anti-Paire? I don't know Ivashka well enough to predict this match.
Molcan 1 You have a couple of people picking your opponent. This will be a tough match. Good luck.
Nadal 1 You might want to be able to use this pick later in the tournament!
Paul 1 Garin, his opponent, is coming back from an absence, and has begun to improve lately. (So his ranking doesn't reflect how well he has been playing lately. You could be in trouble.
Rinderknech 1 I think you are in trouble
Ymer 1 I don't know these players well enough, but it looks like a close match to me.

Commentary
Sonego 20 I suspect this will be a tough match, but I don't know enough to say more.
Goffin 13 He has been playing better recently, and should win.
Sousa 13 His opponent is a qualifier, and I don't know enough about Tseng. Sometimes qualifiers will surprise you.
Carreno Busta 11 He should win. I don't think Simon is back up to his previous level.
Djere 11 I really don't know. I would give Djere an edge.
Tiafoe 10 I don't have a lot of confidence in Tiafoe, especially on clay.
de Minaur 7 He should win, but I think that he is better on hard courts than on clay. So, I am less optimistic than I would usually be.
Hurkacz 6 This is another one of the "Unknown qualifiers might surprise you".
Vesely 3 I think this will be a tough match. Johnson is one of the few American men who don't play worse on clay than on hard courts.
Delbonis 2 This could be a tough match.
Shapovalov 1 Rune has been playing well on clay this year. You could be in trouble.

by naughtyT Sonego Sonego ...so good they picked him twice!
I suspect one of those Sonegos is a Sousa phone home

by jazzyg I won the head-to-head battle with Molcan v. Coria.

I guess it was a risky pick, but he has been playing well, he just beat Coria 6-2, 6-3 last week and plays Djokovic next.

I did not even survive the day. Sat through the last set of Carreno-Busta's epic choke job against Simon. Up a break in the fifth set after rolling through the fourth set, he lost the last four games while barely being able to put a ball on court after not missing for the better part of two hours. He was by far the fresher player, but it was hard to play with one hand wrapped around his neck, so the 37-year-old has-been misogynist gets his moment of glory in his final French Open.

by Improbabledream When I picked PCB I had NO IDEA simon was planning to retire after this season. No chance I would have picked him if I knew. This guy has absolutely abused me.

Norrie 15 He should win, but I know amost nothing about his opponent.

Dimitrov 5 Not only has Dimitrov doing fairly well in clay court tournaments this year, but Coric has also been struggling. You will be fine.
Cuevas 4 You should be fine. But I would be more confident if Cuevas had done better in this year's clay court season.
Khachanov 3 He should win.
Korda 3 Of all of today's picks, he has one of the toughest opponents. You may be in for a rough ride.
Auger-Aliassime 1 He should win.

This is bugging me. You said the word misogynist so im trying to remember the name of that guy who said women should not play tennis, because they they should be having children. It was not that long ago, who am I thinking of? Like a talented underracheiver type... oh I just remembered mid post. Gulbis.
I feel your frustration. Pablo let us down. We could have taken sinner or rublev, but we trusted a pro like pablo would outlast a bum like simon. The result is jarring.

Rune 19 One of the nice things to getting a late start is that I don't have to write about being nervous about picking a non-seede player at this point of the tournament, because I already know he won. Which is especialy nice, since I picked him also.
Evans 13 He should win, and lose next round.
Hurkacz 11 He should win.
Basilashvili 7 He should win and probably lose next round.
Sinner 6 He should win, but might have a tougher match.
Garin 3 I think he will win.
Kecmanovic 3 He should win, and lose next round.
Cilic 2 He should win. I am saving him for next round, but you should have enough options for this to not be a problem
Sonego 2 Sousa is a clay court player. You might be in trouble.
Gaston 1 I have absolutely no clues about this match. I will have to assume that you do.
Ruud 1 I think you are picking him too soon, and that you will wish you had him available later on.

Yes, for sure. Started at Wimbledon one year (at least publically). Where he wasn't exactly putting a lot of butts in seats himself. I think he was on the player's council at the time. I had been a fan after watching him win Indy, where I live, but that ruined it.

I give him a good shot too. This is Medvedev's least favorite surface, and Kecmanovic is good on it. And Medvedev has played very little this year.

I give Kecmanovic a shot too. Medvedev's only match since Miami before RG was a straight set loss to Gasquet in Geneva. So wins over Bagnis and now Djere are good, but I'm not convinced that he can make a deep run at all.

by karlovicfanclub I was surprised to be the lone Gaston picker for Day 5.
I picked him because his confidence was high after his impressive first-round win over De Minaur, and I knew he would have the French crowd cheering him on. His opponent was a lucky loser from qualifying who got into the main draw and was playing in the French Open for the first time. He was a 27-year-old ranked No. 153, so this was definitely new territory for him.
Gaston, meanwhile, made the fourth round two years ago.
I realized that sometimes a player will have a letdown after a big upset win, but taking everything into consideration, I thought this was a solid pick. Luckily, Hugo proved me right.

by ponchi101 Which means we still have him available. You don't ;)

And... I had to open my big mouth and lose with Basilashvili.
I have no one available any more.

Ruud 1 I think you are picking him too soon, and that you will wish you had him available later on.
Could well be that way, but I am on a hiking trip in Bryce 🙂. I have no time to research my picks, barely have service here, I haven't even looked at the whole draw yet. Today I woke up at 2:30am remembering I haven't checked my SP picks from the day before 🙈, so I just quickly picked whoever caught my eye. I don't even know if I'll be "alive" by next round, or if I will remember to make a pick.

by naughtyT Evans just wasn't hitting the lines the way he usually does....😝

by ponchi101 We started the day with 49 picks, and there was one person with a dreaded NO PICK, which, I believe, was one person that posted his/her pick IN THIS TOPIC, (as opposed to in the Day 6 topic). Dave will decide if that is valid (we make it clear in our instructions where to post)

Auger Aliassime 18
Dimitrov 3
Djokovic 1
Isner 5
Krajinovic 1
Norrie 14
Zverev 6

So far, only 3 Dimitrovs are dead.

So
49 Started
1 No Pick
ALIVE: 45
DEAD: 3
LIMBO: 0
TOTAL: We wait.

EDIT: This post is superseded by the official posting by Dave. And the person that I said posted his pick HERE, also posted in the proper topic, so his pick counts.

by ptmcmahon Blah, I felt bad about picking Dimitrov the second I did it. I meant to go double check last night and see if I should change but didn't. Oh well.

I know that coming from a fellow loser, this is meaningless, but I would have picked him too. He handled Diego easily just a couple of days ago.
A strange result and even stranger score.

Auger Aliasimme 18 I think he should win. But if Nadal has foot problems today or Sunday, you could find youself in trouble.
Norrie 15 I think he should win.
Zverev 6 As long as you have a good pick for next round, you will be OK.
Isner 5 I liked the post with the fingers crossed. Zapata Miralles just beat Taylor Fritz, so I suspect that he will beat John Isner. I almost picked Zapata Miralles. So, keep your fingers crossed.
Dimitrov 3 So much for that pick, :( It is bad enough that he lost, but 3-1-2 ???
Djokovic 1 I think you will want to have saved him for later.
Krajinovic 1 He is playing Auger Aliassime, who has 18 pickers. I hope you know something they don't.

Especially since Diego barely won last round too.

by Liamvalid I thought Dimitrov was on the decline and never would have picked him against Schwartzman at the French-but I don’t follow either of them that closely I suppose

by dave g Sunday, we will move to an Updated Picks and Results thread.

by 3mlm While it looks like Zverev will win easily, he hasn't quite yet so the greening of his name seems premature.

by ptmcmahon That would be quite the epic jinx. On serve in third, although he's technically "down." :)

by dollymix I feel better about switching my pick from Norrie to Dimitrov now - I was doomed either way, so I'm glad I got knocked out before I even woke up today.

I think you all will make it through today. The only concern is whether or not the Tsitsipas picker is picking him too early.
