by ashkor87 interesting to see that there are many Junior French Open champions still in the draw, some surprising ones even:
2007: Cornet
2008: Halep (the only one to go to win the ladies FO)
2013: Bencic
2014: kasatkina
2015: badosa
2018: Coco
2019: Leylah
I find it strange that, though there have been junior slam champions (Swiatek, Wimbledon, Ostapenko, Wimbledon) who won the Ladies at the French, Halep is the only one to have won both!
also interesting to note that it seems to take a junior champion 2-4 years to win a major at the senior level..sort of maturation period! some never do, of course.

by Deuce Well... things are interesting early this morning...

Jeanjean took the 1st set easily over Pliskova, 6-2, and she leads 3-0 (2 breaks) in the 2nd.

And Juvan has come back from 2-5 in the 1st to even it at 5-5.

Pegula won the 1st set easily over Kalinina 6-1, and leads 4-0 in the 2nd. This, too, is a surprise - not that Pegula is winning, but that she's winning this easily over a player who has had a good past couple of months.

by JTContinental Leolia Jeanjean is handing Pliskova a savage beatdown.

by Suliso Pliskova is on her way out shortly... Yet another top 10 player gone.

Pliskova has been playing so badly this year, this doesn't surprise me at all..

by meganfernandez Pegula had match point at 6-1, 5-2. Lost the next 5 games. Her backhand is nowhere to be found. Kalilina took control.

by Deuce I said Pegula beating Kalinina so easily was a surprise...
Well... Kalinina just came back from 0-4 down in the 2nd (after losing the first) - and Kalinina just won the 2nd 7-5.
Onto the 3rd.

Meanwhile Juvan is playing like she truly believes she can win this - she just took the 2nd set from Badosa 6-3.
Onto the 3rd there, too...

Pegula is recovering well in the third so far. Lost the opening game (making it 7 in a row lost) and then ran off 3. Kalilina making more errors. I think Pegula knew she is error-prone and that helped her reset. I’m glad she recovered, whether she wins or loses.

No-one wants to win this match, it seems...
Pegula has had 3 more match points at 5-4 in the 3rd... Kalinina has had break pints to tie it at 5...
Still going...

by Deuce Pegula needed 10 match points to win her 1st round match, and needed 8 match points to win this one.
You could look at this as her having great difficulty winning clutch points... or as her having tremendous perseverance.

Kalilina has to go play doubles in a couple hours. Against the girls who train in my city, Indy - Emina Betkas and Tara Moore.

I'm going perseverance, esp if she was tired in the third. I don't know how many break points Kalinina had in the last game. At least 5 or 6. Kalinina was a totally different player point to point - a world-beater when she faced match point and shaky when she had BP. She should just start every set at 0-3. Credit to both of them. Pegula kept taking the punches until she finally got it done. I would have liked to see her play up into the court a little more, like Kalinina did. Well, a nail-biter to begin the day.

I'd pick Zidansk in the next round, though (and maybe literally will if I survive today).

by meganfernandez Are we sure Jeanjean isn't Barbora Strycova's alter ego?

by Deuce It's shaping up to be a Jeanjean - Parry Final.
You read it here first! From the same person who predicted a Leylah - Emma Final in the U.S. Open several rounds before it happened - although I admit I was joking then. Mostly.

by meganfernandez Bublik goes for four underarm serves in three points - two lets, one out, one in the net (followed by an ace up the T). By the last one, even I knew it was coming.

Also this is Ostapenkian.

Suliso wrote: Thu May 26, 2022 10:09 am Pliskova is on her way out shortly... Yet another top 10 player gone.
I mostly agree, but this was the same thing we said last year and then she reached the finals at Wimby.
I know, even more of a reason for her to be out of the top ten, as she has a lot of points to defend (and which regardless of the outcome, she won't be able to defend due to the points-ban) but she is not that old.
By now, predictions about the WTA are nothing more than haruspicy.

by ponchi101 Iga enjoying her Thursday practice...
Total points for the set: 24-7. Riske remains trying. Good for her, because it takes certain bravery to be shellacked like this.

by JazzNU
ponchi101 wrote: Thu May 26, 2022 2:32 pm Iga enjoying her Thursday practice...
I hope Alison is able to get on the board so this is a bit less embarrassing.

I watched every single match Iga played in 2020 and she looked like this. I know people thought she looked like this last year, but she was much more dominant in 2020 similar to these scorelines, so this is a good sign for her along with everything else. Highly likely it's just a matter of time before she's crowned. The player in her path that I thought might most challenge her early lost in the first round, but maybe there will be more than just practice matches starting in the 4th round. Or maybe it won't matter who it is like it didn't in 2020.

by Suliso Ostapenko could be her cryptonite. If she gets that far of course.

by ponchi101 I would say that you need a very hard hitting player (and Ostapenko is), zoning for two sets. Sabalenka not missing could also be it, as long as her serve is getting in.
Riske is the totally wrong player to beat her, as we can see. Limited power, and no weapons. The second set 6-2 (pending) is an adequate score for Riske.

by JazzNU
Suliso wrote: Thu May 26, 2022 3:08 pm Ostapenko could be her cryptonite. If she gets that far of course.
And I believe she's the last player to beat her.

by JazzNU Halep out of nowhere called for the doctor and they are checking her blood pressure. No idea what's wrong, but she's going to keep playing with the medical staff on standby.

by jazzyg Halep's loss was sickening and depressing for me.

I don't have any idea what happened to her, but actually that's the third or fourth time I've seen her play a match exactly like that this year, minus the blood pressure concern. She starts out playing, in my view, really well and forcing Zheng into errors while dictating the play. Then, suddenly, Zheng stopped making any errors (making me question whether Halep was actually forcing anything or just benefiting from erratic play) and Halep had absolutely no answer. She missed game points for 3-1 in the second set and then blew a 40-0 lead at 2-all. After that, it was one-way traffic.

The match it resembled the most: she was a couple of games away from beating Ostapenko earlier this year, then lost the tiebreak 7-0 and the third set 6-0.

It's not a matter of her not trying as earlier in her career. She just doesn't look like she has the game of a top-50 player once her opponent stops missing. Strange. She beat Gauff and Badosa easily on clay recently, but I saw the Gauff match and Gauff played terribly, so I'm guessing Badosa did the same thing.

You're invited to Bar Muguruza to drink with us. Halep might already be in that age where you can still reach your peak level but not as often. It's a different age for everyone. She looked a little ragged at the end to me. Wasn't she touching her chest, like something didn't feel right?

Maybe she doesn't have the same grit anymore. But since she bothered to go work with Patrick, I gather she is trying to find it.

by ponchi101 She was never a player with lots of weapons. And indeed, when such players start getting old, winning matches just on grit and determination becomes harder.
I thought she would go farther.
Side note. We are looking at an entire replacement of a generation. Halep is just on the list of players that are slowly fading.

by jazzyg Halep's only 30.

You may be right, but Kerber won Wimbledon at that age and has to work every bit as hard as Halep to win points. Halep played a terrific match against Swiatek at Indian Wells before getting injured in the second set. I think it's something personal going on, but time will tell. She's certainly eons away from the No. 2 ranking I posted was within reach by the end of the year a couple of months ago. Who knows? She might retire.

by JazzNU Great win for Qinwen Zheng. I've said this before, but I like her game a lot and I think she's going to continue to rise. She did not win because of Halep's health struggles, which came very late in the match, when Halep was already down a break in the 3rd set. Qinwen regrouped after losing the 1st set, changed her gameplan and really got into a groove in the 2nd set. Halep lost a 10-minute service game early in the 2nd set that turned the tides for Qinwen.

Collins v. Rogers - Surprised with how relatively easy this match was for Shelby. Only watched the end because I was watching Halep v. Zheng, but Collins made a push at the end to get back into the match, but seemed very frustrated outside of that and was just error prone today. Shelby stayed even throughout, which is all it took at the end to close her out.

by ponchi101
jazzyg wrote: Thu May 26, 2022 4:42 pm Halep's only 30.

I think that maybe we have been slightly misled by this generation of extra-longevous, superb champions. The Roger/Serena/Rafa/Novak model might be the exception, not the rule. Most champions retire earlier than that.
Remember how few players won Slams after 30. Maybe it is indeed the time in which almost all players start to decline.

by meganfernandez Pegula and Kalinina both had to play doubles a couple hours after their long singles match (not partners). Pegula won with Gauff, Kalinina lost with Bencic. Rough day for Kalinina. On the plus side, she and Bencic lost to the Indy team that got into the tournament yesterday when Bouzkova had to withdraw with Covid. They were first alternates. Now guaranteed 17,000 euros - the're married, so it all goes to the same household. Nice turn of events for them.

Yes. The expectations are now for everyone to play at a high level well into their 30s, and that's not always going to be the case. Going to be player by player. I'd say most still won't have that kind of top-level longevity, which is different situation than a player having their best results in their late 20s/early 30s. Ultimately it's just going to be an individual scenario, based on their health, motivations, life circumstances.

by martini4me After Collins's loss, only four of the top 12 women's seeds remain.

by Suliso Add Kvitova to Halep and Muguruza. Probably Azarenka too.

by meganfernandez This Tsitsipas match has been pretty competitive and the atmosphere is loud. They just traded breaks in the fourth. Never heard of Kolar. This is his first Slam main draw. He has played quite a few qualies but never made it in. It's only his second main-draw match above the Challenger level ever. First was 4 years ago vs. Ferrer. He's 25.

by ponchi101 And we may never again will, but he is playing very good tennis and the match is indeed very entertaining.
His drop shot is damn good, especially on the BH. He hides it very well.

by ponchi101 WTF is Alona wearing? Harley Quinn's sports line?!

by ponchi101 A fine match, that should have gone to 5. It would have been fun.

ponchi101 wrote: Thu May 26, 2022 7:50 pm A fine match, that should have gone to 5. It would have been fun.
This was one of the rare instances when I wanted to watch a fifth set. Too bad, the way the bottom half is, Kolar could have had a decent shot at the final. Crowd cheering his name in appreciation.

Stef at the microphone: "Mr. Kolar was putting every bit of his body behind the ball and I'd like to congratulate him for such an effort."

Oddly, he slammed his racket to the court after he won, with a very intense angry expression. If you didn't know, you'd have thought he lost.

by ti-amie The crowd was not 100% behind Stefanos and Kolar blinked at the end. I enjoyed the match though and wanted a fifth set too.

I have no idea what Ostapenko is wearing.

by ponchi101 Alona's impossibility to just hit her shots at 80% is incredible. She hits everything at 100%. Not that she has ever done anything else.
Surely, somebody could point out the problem with that.

by meganfernandez Cornet’s making a big show of a leg pain after an awkward slide. Maybe a groin pull. She’s limping.

by ti-amie Ya never know with Alizé. Maybe the crowd singing “La Marseillaise” will perk her up...

by jazzyg That Halep-Ostapenko consolation-draw match should be fun.

by ti-amie

Here's a good look at that kit Ostapenko was wearing.

From the clothing company Alona has invested in. Adidas is getting slandered for it and it's not even their design, but she's got an Adidas visor on, so I guess that's the assumption being made.

Hot mess of a design, but totally in line with Alona's style, so I'm sure she loves it.

by ponchi101 Thanks for that. I did think it was Adidas because of the visor, and was wondering not only why she was not wearing the standard line (as if she was some Stella McCartney protégé), but what collective lunacy had taken over the reigns of the company.
It is so bad that Adidas should come out with a statement.

by meganfernandez I love Asia Muhammad's dress but can't find a photo of it. It's similar to cuts she has worn already this year, but the color is different and I love it. It's at the top of my best-dressed list in Paris this year. I like Leylah's outfit, too. Simple but modern and suits her.

Our new little friendship doesn't hurt. :) It's why I bothered to watch some of her dubs match. Otherwise would never have seen the dress. She continues to like my posts, which is so puzzling. Literally she is the only person who reacts to my Stories.

The crop top is popular look. I think it suits her frame. She can easily be swallowed up by clothes. I actually think flashing the midriff makes her look older.
