Instead she went on to imply that she would rather have lost to Iga than to lose to Cori the implication being that Iga played poorly and should have beaten her. Amazing stuff.

Now if you're Iga, someone who famously hates losing and someone says that "you should've beaten me" what would you do? Would you say nothing and let the implication that you were the lesser player go unanswered or would you do what Iga did and complement the woman who won the tournament saying "I see what you did there and I'm not having it?" to Sabalenka.

I mean I see how it's possible it could be throwing shade, but I just think it could just be a legitimate congrats and we're thinking harder about it than Iga did.

Jannik: The week after Paris was calm. Very calm. I went to my parents', we had a barbecue, I met with my friends, we played ping pong... normal things, no? Exactly what I needed after a stressful tournament, and I always like to hang out and relax with the people who know me. I'm lucky enough to have people around me who care for me a lot and are honest with me, and that's it. Now we're here in Halle for a new tournament, new challenges... and also new difficulties, because it's a totally different surface. But yeah, all things considered I'm happy.

Interviewer: Going back for a moment to Paris; the day after the match Federer wrote a post on Instagram where he said "there were 3 winners today [Carlos, Jannik and the sport of tennis]." What does it feel like, knowing that for many people there were in some way 3 winners?

Jannik: Well, it's a positive sign for all of tennis I think. I believe that the most important thing is to make this sport grow, and to show that we're the kind of athletes who give it their all. And that's it; I think it was an incredible match, a really high-level match, and it didn't end the way we wanted but it happens. It happened to the very best players in the world, too, to live similar moments. And it always depends on how one is able to react to them and get out of them - and also on what one sees: I can either see the missed match points, or I can see on the other hand a match where I played like never before on that surface, and where I stayed mentally focused for 5 and a half hours and I didn't complain about anything. And so... [this kind of loss] it happens.

You mentioned the changes Wim Fissette wanted to implement right at the start of the season. Can you elaborate on what you meant?

– First of all, we slightly adjusted my position when hitting fast balls to the forehand. That helped me a lot because my grip requires a bit more attention when it comes to those kinds of shots. We also worked on the serve. I think you can see that I’m serving a bit better to the backhand side. I was really pleased with that.

What’s the number one priority for you and your coach during training right now?

– I think the first few days on grass are mainly about getting used to the surface. Maybe also changing the way I work with my footwork. Different movements are needed, and I have to stop differently before hitting the ball. We've only just started training on grass, but Wim has prepared some tactical plans for me to follow. We’ll be practicing them in every session so I can apply them during matches. We'll use more slice and slice serves, which can earn a lot of points on grass.

In recent interviews and press conferences, you’ve said your playing style is well known to your opponents and you're looking for new solutions. What might those be?

– I think it’s that more varied play, with slice, drop shots. Before the clay season, I actually promised myself I’d hit two drop shots per match (laughs). As you can see, it’s sometimes hard to squeeze them in, especially when every point feels hugely important and I’d rather play it in a way that gives me more control. Still, I want to develop my game in that direction and make it a bit more varied.

You’ve been working with Wim Fissette for eight months now. What results do you see from that partnership?

– It’s no longer as big of a change as when I parted ways with coach Sierzputowski and started working with coach Wiktorowski. Back then I was younger and had fewer tennis tools. The progress was much more noticeable. I was introducing new things I didn’t know before and couldn’t yet implement. Over the past few years, I’ve learned a lot, so there are naturally going to be fewer of those breakthrough "Eureka!" moments. At this stage of my career, aside from diversifying my game, most of the work on other shots is about fine-tuning details.

I'm not bothered by players (especially ones as young as Mirra) showing emotion on court - crying, shouting, yelling at their box, etc. Even when they get into arguments with the umpire, it's annoying but not something I have much of an issue with, it's kind of the umpire's job to deal with emotional players and if they have to take their anger out on someone/something best the umpire imo. But smashing a ball into the stands is becoming a repeat problem with Mirra and the more times it happens the less it's excusable...those people bought tickets, they're there to support women's tennis and they're the reason she earns so much money and lives the lifestyle she does. She could injure someone if she keeps doing this.

If a player does it once obviously it's stupid but if they don't do it again it shows that it's something they've worked on and don't make a habit of it. But it doesn't really seem like Mirra's working on her impulse control

A new poisonous species to add to Australian Lore: The Deranged/Rabid tennis player. A wild species, usually harmless but very annoying, that spews non-sense about itself. Granted, only two specimens have ever been identified but they are clearly distinct: Bernard Tomic (Delusorious Tomicus) and Nickolas Kyrgios (Molestus Kyrgyocus).
Both are best handled by simply ignoring them and focusing on more pleasant animals, i.e. mostly any other Australian species.
