by JTContinental Good morning, all and welcome to our little game once again! The tournament is different, but the rules remain the same--when you're red, you're dead.
This thread will be WTA USO central, and the Tuesday Morning Quarterback will be on hand to guide you through this tournament with my stellar insight, witty bon mots, and gentle ribbing at your terrible, terrible losing pick. As usual, I will rate your losing pick as DANK or STANK, with a reminder that all judgments are final, correct, and legally binding.
Enjoy!
by JTContinental I will make things shiny and pretty here shortly, but in the meantime, please dance to the musical stylings of Info Dump, our house band.

Haha. During either the RG or Wimbledon SP you were asking why JT was getting kills early and often to cut down his numbers to something manageable quickly and I said JT wishes it into existence every time and I said you need to put it out there more often in order for it to happen.
by
ponchi101 Yes, that was the conversation.
And the reason you are slightly more popular than Jt when SP time comes around
(Kidding, Jt).
by JTContinental I was very excited to see all those Trevisans because this isn't the French Open. I almost made them red before the match even started.
by JTContinental It looks like we lost 41 players today. TMQ will pass judgment on your losing pick upon the conclusion of round 1
by JTContinental Today's tally took a very long time because it appears our little thread is infested with zombies! TMQ (who is not your mother; police your own picks, please) counted no less than 5 of them, as well as 7 no picks, leaving us with 144 to start Day 2.

by jazzyg I would have enjoyed having an easy path through day 3 with Shelby Rogers if my pick from day 2 had finished her match at the time.
As it turns out, Alexandrova won 7-5 in the third set to get the bandwagon through. She had it all the way, even when she was serving at 4-5, 30-all after dumping the first two games upon the resumption of play today, and again when she faced a game point at 5-5 and two more while serving for the match.

I picked Alexandrova because she is just a pleasure to watch, such a positive attitude and great energy on the court. And also, the way she outplayed her opponent on match point was impressive.
Glad this is behind us....

JT: WHEN are you going to start letting us know how much our picks suck already? We all are waiting impatiently....
Hey, the first round just ended! Edition one will drop tonight.
Granted, the Trevisan comment was pleasant foreplay. Now, we all want our happy ending.
by JTContinental At long last we have concluded the first round, and now that TMQ has come down from the adrenalin rush from the Serena/Kontaveit match, we are ready to proceed! Nelslus has been eager to feast on your corpses all day, so let's set the table for him, shall we? But will his meal be DANK or STANK? Time to roll out the courses...
Martina Trevisan (13 victims) STANK This was the equivalent of lighting a $500 bill on fire, cutting it into pieces, and flushing it down the toilet.
Daria Saville (12 victims) STANK CONTROVERSIAL This would normally be a dank pick, but there had been rumors that Saville wasn't coming in at 100% healthy, so the best bet would have been to see how she did in a round before committing.
Sara Sorribes Tormo (4 victims) I'll award this a soft DANK because Sorribes Tormo should have won this, but it's also not surprising that she didn't. With her, Trevisan, and Siegemund all losing in the first round, the Holy Trinity of Hindrance Shriekers have all been relegated to being able to use their biggest talent only from the stands for the rest of the tournament (or maybe they will all be bellowing their way through the doubles draw; TMQ doesn't care enough to check).
Jil Teichmann (3 victims) STANK Sure she had the number by her name, but Zhang is a way better player than Teichmann even here at her worst slam.
Coco Vandeweghe (3 victims) STANK Not all Coco is created equal, and this one is so old and cold that it has that gross layer of skin on the top of it.
Nuria Parrizas-Diaz (2 victims) STANK Looking through the draw, TMQ has concluded that the only first round pick worse than Dalma Galfi was her opponent, who you picked, dear loser.
Kaja Juvan (2 victims) DANK TMQ feels nothing for this choice but since Bucsa had heretofore not won a grand slam match, will call it DANK, even though Juvan has stalled out a little this year.
Elise Mertens (2 victims) DANK Fun fact: Mertens has reached at least the R32 in every grand slam that has been held since the 2018 AO, so you are part of a milestone for her!
Elena Rybakina (2 victims) STANK CONTROVERSIAL TMQ is calling it as he sees it. You had enough of an inkling to realize that Rybakina was not going to perform well here despite her no stakes exhibition victory from earlier this summer, but should have acted on that impulse and just avoided this match altogether.
Bernarda Pera (2 victims) STANK This is your own fault for only dropping in during the grand slams, otherwise you would have seen TMQ and many others opining for weeks about how Pera was going to bow out in the first round here, so you will get no credit for noticing her giant summer victory tour, especially since at least half of those wins were on clay. She did make a 125 level final a couple of weeks ago, where she lost to the skin-on Coco in the final.
Marie Bouzkova (1 victim) STANK A solid pick since she won her first round, she just didn't do so on the day that you picked her.
Ann Li (1 victim) DANK Osorio is in general the better player, but TMQ can kiiiiiinda see the line of thinking here in picking a homer on the hard courts.
Diane Parry (1 victim) DANK It's still early in her career, but Parry is shaping up to be the type of player who will take you out of the pool whether you pick for or against her.
Tamara Zidansek (1 victim) DANK Mandlik is on the rise, but Zidansek has been seeded in most of the recent slams. TMQ has been trying to figure out for days why her last name isn't Mandlikova, but he clearly doesn't understand Czech naming conventions.
Sofia Kenin (1 victim) STANK Oh,child, bless your heart...
Jelena Ostapenko (1 victim) DANK Ostapenko believes that most of her losses are someone else's fault, so I guess this time it's yours.
Taylor Townsend (1 victim) DANK A feel-good pick, but she's still clearly on the comeback trail. By the AO she might be a solid bet.
And that's the buffet--equal parts sweet and savory it seems. Enjoy!

by ozjohn53 Hi, the website is showing that Kalinina has withdrawn, so those of us who picked Kvitova for day 4 in good faith, are we OK?

This was a very last minute withdrawal (I was on the USO site at 4 am and didn't see anything about it, so I am going to allow it in this case.
by JTContinental Getting a bit of a late start this morning, so give me a moment catch things up and make them pretty.
by ponchi101 We know there already was mayhem, with the Alexandrova crash. Now it is just a matter of how many souls went off that cliff.
by Irena2 I thought about picking Alexandrova, but I just couldn't bring myself to pick against Lauren Davis. I love her never-say-die attitude.
by JTContinental Today's band of miscreants included 5 no picks, 2 zombies, and 1 person who thought they'd just start playing on Day 4 and TMQ wouldn't notice, leaving us with 107 remaining

LOL, and HERE is today's irony....I originally had put down Cornet, had considered Azarenka.....then, I saw ALL!!!!!! you monsters picking Begu, looked at the records of the two....and, EVEN THOUGH I HAD BEEN WELL AWARE OF HOW MANY CHINESE WOMEN ARE DOING GREAT AT THIS TOURAMENT.....yup, I switched over to Begu!! (IF Cornet also loses, then I might not feel so bad.)

No excuse for us. Face it- we picked a player with a name eerily similar to a cartoon character from The Jetsons.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Gazoo

I. Had. Picked. Cornet. Which means that one should make their own picks, and ignore the bandwagons. (Except, of course, when they're right and you're wrong.)
by Wanderlust When I came here this morning and saw all the Begu pickers, many with multiple medals (of which I obviously have none), I thought, "Wow, they must know something I don't. I probably should follow their lead." But I decided to go with my first instinct of Collins. She better not let me down tonight!
by Suliso The problem is that Collins might not only win today, but keep winning all the way to SF's or even beyond...

Wanderlust. We TALK ABOUT TENNIS. That does not mean we KNOW ABOUT TENNIS.
by karlovicfanclub Every time I watch Lauren Davis play I wonder how she manages to win any matches against WTA opponents. Even though she knocked me out of the pool today, kudos to her for figuring out ways to beat more talented opponents.
by atlpam I guess I just delayed the inevitable. Switched my pick from Alexandrova, avoided the Begu bandwagon and ended up taking van Uytvanck and losing anyway.
by ponchi101 Yes. That was destiny.
by joanjettson Ekaterina Alexandrova 16
I knew it was a lousy pick and didn't have the gumption to just pick Lauren instead.
Sigh
Another year, and no lessons learned haha

Well, we agree now that Alexandrova was a lousy pick, but there was no way on Earth anybody was going to pick Lauren. That would have been almost supernaturally prescient.

This is all my fault. I cursed it by teasing the bandwagon in the previous round when Alexandrova's match was rain-delayed overnight late in the third set. I knew I was tempting the SP gods by picking Alexandrova in the next round, but that's how much I believed it was a gimme and she would then lose to Iga.
My backups won - Cornet and Burel. Serves me right for being even a teeny bit mean.
Lousy karma, not lousy pick.
by JTContinental Day 5 dawns anew after Day 4: The Reddening. We lost half the group yesterday, and another today with a NP, leaving us with 58. There were also 2 zombies, one who is back for the second day in a row.
The breakdown
Veronika Kudermetova 32
Shaui Zhang 12
Liudmila Samsonova 9
Coco Gauff 2
Caroline Garcia 1
Alison Riske-Armitraj 1
Shelby Rogers 1
by JTContinental I'll be back presently with the Round 2 breakdown of losers
by JTContinental Round 2 is in the books, and taken 1/3 of our original players with it. Yesterday was a great day to run an SP. Now, how about those many, many losers? Were their picks STANK orDANK? Let's find out!
Irina-Camila Begu & Ekaterina Alexandrova (42 combined victims) DANK Were these good picks? Not really, especially for those who saw Alexandrova's first round struggles. But with the sheer joy and dopamine rush these collective losses provided TMQ yesterday, four green letters on a tennis forum is the least we can do in return.
Barbora Krejcikova (7 victims) STANK Krejcikova is still coming back from the dual whammy of a serious injury and not being as good as her 2021 results. The field knows how to play her now, so her element of surprise is gone.
Yulla Putintseva (4 victims) STANK Putintseva looked fairly terrible in her first round against Anisimova, just not as terrible as Anisimova (nor did she develop both a fake injury and a fake illness after dropping the first set). She was doomed as soon as she stepped on court.
Alison van Uytvanck (4 victims) STANK van Uytvanck's stellar US Open career since 2014 includes her R164 bye against Venus and Viktoria Kuzmova. Need I say more?
Beatriz Haddad Maia (3 victims) DANK While TMQ personally called this upset, it was just on a hunch more than any actual statisical backing. Nothing that happened this summer foretold this result.
Harriet Dart (2 victims) STANK Dart was definitely due a letdown after her upset of Kasatkina, or at least a return to her regular losing form.
Leylah Fernandez (2 victims) STANK You waited one round too long to make this sassy pick. TMQ knows this, because he pulled the trigger at the right time in the first round.
Maria Sakkari (1 victim) DANK Sakkari is struggling mightily with confidence at the moment, but she shouldn't have struggled this hard.

How DARE you? Clearly, the Begu pick Stank. Your lack of contempt for us Begu pickers shrinks all of us to an eternal level of Shame & Stank (not Dank) Despair. We beg you. Please reconsider.

Oh, c'mon, Nelslus! We can accept this from newbies and other people with less sanguine personalities, but from you? Nah, it was right there and you dropped that one!
WE BEG U, please reconsider!!
And it was not a bad pick. I, for yuan, felt that Begu beating a player ranked 172 was the most likely result.

by JTContinental 3 no picks and 1 very persistent zombie leave us with 54 to start Day 6
The breakdown
Jessica Pegula 20
Qinwen Zheng 18
Aryna Sabalenka 10
Victoria Azarenka 3
Danielle Collins 2
Petra Kvitova 1

by
dave g Only 54. I have 81. You are clearly winning the race to see who can kill off their pickers fastest.
by naughtyT crikey that Kvitova pick was brave.
by ponchi101 And smart, because Pegula looms ahead.
by
Irena2 Why???
by JTContinental Day 7 we have 1 no pick and that same zombie lurking around seeking the contents of your brain. Additionally, the count was off by 1 yesterday, so we have 36 remaining. TMQ regrets the error.
We will have at least a little blood today as we have a duel between Samsonova and Tomljanovic pickers
Today's breakdown
Caroline Garcia 13
Coco Gauff 13
Liudmila Samsonova 5
Ajla Tomljanovic 4
Ons Jabeur 1
by JTContinental It's Sunday Funday at TMQ headquarters, so I'll be back tonight with the R32 loser roundup

I can guarantee you JT is already foaming at the mouth due to complete and utter glee.
by Invek If I counted correctly we've got:
Azarenka - Pliskova: 7-7
Kvitova - Pegula: 6-3
Swiatek - Niemeier: 6-0
Collins - Sabalenka: 1-0
(1 Sabalenka pick but by someone who had Samsonova yesterday.)
by JTContinental We had 1 more no pick on Day 8, leaving 30 with a chance to make it to the coveted Updated P&R Thread. TMQ also owes you a recap, which he will provide shortly.
The breakdown
Karolina Pliskova 8
Victoria Azarenka 6
Petra Kvitova 6
Iga Swiatek 6
Jessica Pegula 3
Danielle Collins 1
by JTContinental Better late than never--here is round 3 loser round up! There were only two killers during these two days, but were their murders STANK or DANK?
Qinwen Zheng (18 victims) DANK Niemeier is a bit of an unknown, but seems like she might be a solid upset pick over the next few years. Appropos of nothing, there was a movie from the 90's where Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes played drag queens call Too Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar and I think about it every time I see Jule Niemier in print.
Shelby Rogers (1 victim) DANK An ambitious pick, but it wasn't totally out of question given Jabeur and Rogers' respective forms coming into this tournament.

Fixed--TMQ regrets the error
by JTContinental After the dust has settled, 17 of us have received our golden ticket to the Updated Picks & Results thread, including TMQ (for the first time in forever). I'll analyze your R16 losing picks there later tonight.
