Goading the crowd, cheering when his opponent had a (expletive), etc.

I think he was frustrated because he had the first set locked up and ended up in a TB (that he likely should have lost)

by JTContinental I had not heard of Alex Michelsen before and saw he was in the QF of Newport, so I looked him up. He's 18 and has made 5 ITF finals this year, winning 2 titles.

We saw him play in Chicago- which he won, including beating Nishikori 6-1 in the third in the QF. Solid, 6'4", all-court player, has potential, needs to work on his backhand. Strangely enough, there were a few solid 18 year old (or so) Americans- our Very Own Village of the Damned. After he won, we referred to Michelsen as The New Ben Shelton. (I know, I know- Ben who? :gorgeous: ) But, who knows?

Yes. You can't say anymore that he is shaking off the rust. There is something missing from his game, something that he lost during the lay off.
Of course, it feeds my theory that any extended time off is terrible for any player not named Federer, Nadal or Djokovic, so I can't say I am looking at this with complete objectivity. But it is one reason why I wonder how come the players take these extended breaks.
Hoping Mugu will prove me wrong.

by JTContinental I wish there was a way to turn off just the commentating during live matches so that I would not have to hear Prakash Armitraj blather incessantly during this Michelsen/Isner match.

by ti-amie I don't watch Newport.

by ponchi101 Uhm, he served RIGHT handed (he therefore is) but then he took the ball from his left pocket and threw a very good pitch with his left arm. That pretty skillful.

by skatingfan Bastad must pay good appearance fees to get 2 top ten players this week.

by ponchi101 It has a lot of tradition too. For the clay courters that will have to see a lot of hard courts for the next two months, time to make some money.

by JTContinental I wonder if Michelsen will go pro now. He's supposed to play for Georgia next year.

by ashkor87 He should...beating Isner is a feat for a pro...they say he will decide around the USO..there must be admission deadlines looming by now...

He committed to go the University of Georgia back at the end of last year, and classes begin mid-August so he will have to decide pretty quickly if he wants to go pro. He's almost certain at this point to get a wildcard, and even a first round loss is a substantial pay cheque to pass up.

by ponchi101 The thing is not only about going pro, but actually going to college. There is no way he can do both.
I say go to college one year, at least. See how you fare there. If you clearly dominate, go pro. If you are in the pack, you are not ready for the pros.
Beating Isner is a very good win, but it is a sample of one, on a peculiar surface.

What a dump. What a depressive sight. The squalor, the filth.

How can you even concentrate when you are playing there? I would be like "did I just die and this is paradise?"

by ti-amie I actually watched the Newport Final, the first time I've watched a match there in a couple of years. Michelson has a lot to learn. At crucial points of the match he panicked and Mannarino stayed cool and composed winning the match 6-2, 6-4. I'm not sure who Michelson's coach is.

by ti-amie

by ponchi101 I have said it before. The greatest over achiever in the sport.

by jazzyg As I said the last time we addressed Mannarino, he would be a consistent top-20 player if more tournaments were played on grass.

I used to follow Newport closely because grass is my favorite surface to watch, but I saw very little of the tournament this year. The funny thing is when I saw Mannarino was in the draw, I thought it was a rare appearance and wondered why he had not played there more often. Then I looked him up and found out he had played it seven times, going only 6-7 in those appearances.

This time he did what I would have thought he could do regularly against the type of fields that tournament gets. My only guess is the grass has improved to allow more rallying from the baseline and he used to struggle with the conditions.
