by ponchi101 Andreescu is into the USO qualifying.
Caroline Garcia received a main draw WC.
Because, you know, it is Garcia that is the former champion while Andreescu only reached the semis once.

Does the WTA always make an effort to screw things up?
(I know, most likely it has to do with the reciprocal WC's between slams, but still, what a sham).

Other (non American player): 5%

But this time, OTHER has just a sliver of a chance. And that is because Iga is back.

by ashkor87 so, not very different from mine.. I think there will be broad consensus.. reason I reduced Coco (though I started where you did) is she is trying our some new biomechanics.. will take some time to adjust..

by ashkor87 My 'field' is mainly Mboko..maybe she can pull an Andreescu...

by ashkor87 I see Alexandrova and Shnaider are due to meet again at the USO.. third round.. assuming the USO is a bit faster than Monterrey, we could see the result reversed.. but sad, all the same, that they meet again so soon. Assuming, of course, that Xinyu Wang doesnt knock off Alexandrova (which could well happen, Wang is really a fine player) and Shnaider gets past Siegemund (which also may not happen).

There you go. I can envision her doing well. Up and coming, has the athleticism, and there is that precedent you mention.
Give her a solid 2% chance. That is a bit more than your 1% ( joke ;) )

by ti-amie Mboko has a tough first round match vs Krejcikova who I'm guessing will be very motivated to win against this summer's sensation.

by ashkor87 Projected semis:
Andreeva vs Sabalenka and Swiatek vs Osaka
Coco will struggle because of her new corrected action, will do well in the long run but it will take time - new muscle memory has to be built..

by Suliso I'm not convinced about Osaka either. More likely it will be some surprise.

by ponchi101 Andreeva beating Parks 0&1 will be the oddity. She has not been playing well.
I say we will see two mild surprises in the semis. Nothing totally out to lunch, but a bit unexpected.

she played very well in this match - she is coming of age.. she will soon challenge for the throne. Maybe even the US Open title this year. Sabalenka, Rybakina, Gauff, all have problems - except Swiatek, they are all a bit off - there is an opening, and Andreeva is the best player outside those few.

by Suliso I'm reading elsewhere that Swiatek is the first player since Radwanska a decade ago to win 24 consecutive GS R1 matches.

Andreeva is injured and will not make the SF, I don't think. It was kind of surprising that she was playing at all, and beating Alycia Parks isn't really an indicator of how she is feeling healthwise. She'll lose to the first opponent who is good at tennis is my prediction.

Impressive, but still a long way from Serena's 46, which ranged from 1998-2012.

saw the match, didnt look injured to me..

by ti-amie Parks played the semis in Monterrey I believe, a huge mistake on her part. There was no way she was going to win this match but that's just my opinion.

by jazzyg I don't know what Andreeva will do for the rest of the tournament, but her movement and hitting were top notch against Parks. Parks helped her out by playing terribly, but irrespective of that, Andreeva was very, very sharp.

by ashkor87 Clijsters thinks Osaka will win the title.. how I wish..!

by ponchi101 Bold prediction.
I would not mind but...

by ashkor87 Siegemund beat Shnaider, as predicted. Winning the previous week, far away, on a different surface - kiss of death.

by ashkor87 Same thing happened to Noskova last year..Alexandrova is a veteran, made of sterner stuff..

by ashkor87 can Vekic beat Coco? somehow, I doubt it.. dont know their h2h record though..I dont remember them playing each other much

by ponchi101 If good Vekic shows up, she can fight. If Coco brings 18 DF's with her, you know every match is a tragedy for her.

by ashkor87 good win for Vekic over Bouzas Maneiro.. watched a bit on highlights on the USO site - I always wondered why Vekic does so well on fast courts (of course she did well at the Olympics too but I thought that was abit of an outlier).. she has a very short backswing, almost none at all, especially on the forehand, generates pace using the opponent's power - good recipe for doing well on a fast court.
Sinner, too, has a very short backswing on the forehand, unlike Alcaraz - I imagine it helps him a lot on fast courts.

by ashkor87 Oatapenko was always likely to lose early - she is the one who has no class (not in my sense) - saying all those stupid things about TT .. for no reason whatever that I could see.

by ponchi101 It stemmed from Townsend hit a net shot and not making the common "I am sorry" gesture.
Kind of a silly thing to complain about, I sort of think.

ashkor87 wrote: Sun Aug 24, 2025 8:47 am so, not very different from mine.. I think there will be broad consensus.. reason I reduced Coco (though I started where you did) is she is trying our some new biomechanics.. will take some time to adjust..
the effects are already visible.. she is so cautious with her serve motion, she is not hitting it at all... just trying to spin it in. Not going to win the USO that way.

Kind of like yelling at the chair umpire because they awarded a player a first serve. It's like a there's a pattern here or something.

by ti-amie It was a bad set of tennis though.

The mods already took the post down once so why won't they take this down?

by ponchi101 Yes, but if you are going to make that claim, back it up with some numbers. At least.

Whatever helps you sleep at night...

by ponchi101 Yes, Emma. They have a point to prove. But not against you.
And, if that is the reason they beat you, the solution then is easy. Maybe you should get a point to prove too.

by ashkor87 revised SF expectation
Vondrousova versus Krejcikova
Osaka vs Swiatek..
Vondrousova has beaten Sabalenka before, on rass, in fact, and is playing very well - can stand up to power, as she showed against Rybakina. Krejcikova is a Tier 1 player, two-time major champion, also playing well, she should be able to beat Pegula..
On the other side, Osaka is performing very well.. beat Coco as expected. There is a decent chance she can win the whole thing..

by ponchi101 Osaka beat Coco as expected? Expected by whom?
I am not saying I am surprised she beat her; Coco is not playing well. But from there to expected there is a bit of road.
Marketa/Aryna. 5-4, 3-2 overall and hard courts for Aryna. Again, any outcome will be reasonable. But with Elena out, I say Aryna will meet her demise in the finals.

I went with Osaka in predictions at least :)

by ponchi101 A bit surprised about the Pegula/Krejcikova match. The score was a bit too easy for Jessica. Anybody saw it?

Actually, checking predictions we went 6-4 in favor of Osaka over Gauff.

Krecikova was flat, and didn't have her legs - Pegula played her regular steady level, and won comfortably.

by ponchi101 When you win, everybody is a wonder.
it is when you lose that you show who you really are.
She does not take losing easily. Which I gather is one reason why she is so great.

that is more or less what I saw.. I did see the whole match.. and anyway, Krejcikova's backswing is too elaborate for a fast court.. Pegula just didnt give her time, harried and pushed her.. well done!
also, I dont think Krejcikova handles heat well - she had wilted at the AO against Keys a couple years ago..

by ashkor87 That Osaka versus Anisimova match had some of the best pure ball striking I have seen in a long time - good tennis show!

by ponchi101 Both matches were good (say the scores). Now let's get ready to Sinner slaughtering Felix in 1:23. And maybe, Novak can challenge Carlos and it will be a good match.
See how much fun that will be.

by Suliso Alcaraz vs Djokovic is at a good time in my time zone. The other match in the middle of the night and I'm fine missing it.

by ashkor87 one way to see the women's finals is - Anisimova enabled Swiatek to win Wimbledon by taking out Sabalenka.. has she now enabled Sabalenka to win the USO by taking out Swiatek and Osaka? I think both have a 50-50 chance today, first time in a long time the finalists have had an even chance.
I hear Trump is going to watch the Men's - does he realize there is only one American in the finals, and that is on the women's side..!
