Jabeur. The person that picked Ons has to explain what did he/she know about Jabeur not being on very solid ground. Granted, he is currently at the Cafe la Guillotine, drowning his sorrows, but he certainly knew a lot more than the rest of of did, although not enough to foresee his early demise. Many people saw Jabeur as a solid #2 in the bets to win the entire thing. He knew better. Just not better enough.
Li. Drinks are ON THE HOUSE for you at the Cafe La Guillotine. Your player is up 6-3 in the first, and 3-2 in the second, and she retires. We have no news as to what happened to her, but, whatever it might have been (C19, a meteorite fell on her head, bubonic plague, some truly nasty spell, what have you) you just caught one truly bad break. Drop by the lounge; you need to drown those sorrows quickly. Like, right now

by JTContinental Thanks to ponchi for setting up this thread for me--the French Open is the trickiest timewise for me.
He did forget to mention that when you're red, you're dead!
by
nelslus JT: Please just go ahead and put anyone who picks Kvitova in red.

by JTContinental Only 6 dead after Day 1, but Tuesday Morning Quarterback will still judge your picks as DANK or STANK here on the safe side of the matches, where I am never wrong.
Dalma Galfi (4 inexplicable victims) STANK Wait, this is a person? I thought a Dalma Galfi was a luxury European sports car that was sponsoring the tournament. If you are her mom, this was excusable, but otherwise a reckless and--unsmart--pick
Ons Jabeur(1 victim) Going to surprise y'all and give this a STANK. This was way too early in the tournament to pick the 2nd best player on clay this season, and you still managed to get it wrong.
Ann Li (1 victim) Our only DANK pick of the day, Li was actually up a set and a break in her match before she had to retire with an injury.
by JTContinental After 7 no picks, I'm counting 136 players remaining
Day 2 breakdown
Nuria Parrizas Diaz 30
Ekaterina Alexandrova 24
Veronika Kudermetova 14

This will likely be the case for the remaining unfinished matches. Please remember to make a pick even if your Day 2 match has not finished
by JTContinental I will rate your losing picks tomorrow upon the conclusion of R128. But here is a preview:

Jabeur was my pick I thought I would chime in. I would be curious to know what you mean by solid ground? I am aware that she has dramtically improved the last two years and has been playing great, but... did you think she had a realistic chance to win this tournament? I saw this thing as having one clear favorite on the wta side, and then just about everyone else. Chaos. The krejicova loss I think would be an example of this...
Philosophically, I think it tends to be a smarter play to pick someone you think is an overwhelming favorite to win in the first round (regardless of if you think they can make a deep run) as opposed to someone you beleive in slightly less in the first round, and also beleive will lose earlier in the draw... you are more likely to lose early this way. This reasoning obviously did not not work for me this time, but I still think it is sound.
But on Jabeur specifically I knew everything you did and nothing more. Ok, probably less. But I see a somewhat volatile style of game that I judge to be untrustworthy in high pressure situations. Also, an 0-4 record in finals untill very recently. I envisioned her dealing with the pressure of being a "favorite" at a grand slam, going against an underdog without that pressure who played well... and losing. Qf or earlier (I was kinda right by the way.) Only thing I guess I regret is going against a player I Like and should have beleived was capable of this: Magda Linette.
So I dont think it was "way too early." I think it was dank. And in either case, someone just picked Nadal to win his first match, which should take me off the hook for most irresponsible round of 128 pick.

She died a noble death!
by JTContinental After 5 no picks, I count 92 players remaining, although many lives still hang in the balance due to holdover matches. At this point, I hope everyone's Day 2 picks win so that I don't have to go back and retroactively remove your Day 3 choices.
After the bandwagon took a hard left of the cliff yesterday, our Kasatkina pickers should be ok, but a surprising number of you chose to test the bandwagon gods by choosing Cornet and Putintseva. While both might cruise, your ride today might also be a white-knuckler.
Day 3 breakdown:
Daria Kasatkina 21
Alize Cornet 14
Yulia Putintseva 12
Kaia Juvan 8
Danielle Collins 4
Simona Halep 4
Madison Brengle 3
Anna Kalinina 3

Karolina Pliskova 3
Tamara Zidansek 3
Caroline Garcia 2
Jelena Ostapenko 2

By SOLID GROUND I meant: these commentaries are an attempt to being funny, and most of the times we miss the mark (or I do). I mean, Jabeur is one very big upset, and that should have been one very safe pick.

Oh, the dreaded "I thought of picking such-and-such, who ends up winning 2 & 1, and then am suffering into a third set TB".
Only worse thing is changing picks into a losing choice.

Which is why I didn't change. Immediately thought about it.
by JTContinental We lost an additional 5 Golubic pickers from yesterday's matches (the 6th player was a no pick today), so numbers adjusted to 87

Fortunately for us, Putty's opponent today was just un-Bara-ble.

by JTContinental Round 1 is in the books and I believe we have 84 people who were able to correctly pick 3 first round winners, which is no easy feat. But now it is time for Tuesday Morning Quarterback to turn his critical eye to the losers, and rate your failed pick as DANK or STANK. Please remember that all ratings are light-hearted, final, non-negotiable and correct. After all, whether DANK or STANK you still are, in fact, a loser. So let's have some fun!
Nuria Parrizas Diaz (30 victims): STANK If any of these now dead people had consulted TMQ--which they did not--I would have advised them against this honey trap pick. There is always one random player that plays above their ranking for a few lead up tournaments, only to flame out on the big stage. She won a tiny glorified challenger and won a couple of rounds in bigger tournaments (one by retirement with her opponent leading 6-1, 4-3). She's also 30 and making her debut here. She's played a tournament every week possible since the middle of February. I'm tired just thinking about that.
Viktorija Golubic (6 victims): STANK There is only a mild STANK coming off this pick. Golubic's only title is on clay, but her results show that her game favors a hard court, and Volynets is an up and coming player that I think will have a solid, journeywoman-type career. Golubic should have won, but this match was a 50/50 gamble.
Liudmila Samsonova (5 victims) STANK Also only a faint whiff of STANK-- After TMQ declared last year that we would never see Samsonova again at a grand slam, she has stubbornly refused to bow to my wisdom, and has shot up the rankings. That said, she's untested at slams still, and I think Kovinic is actually the better player in this match up.
Marta Kostyuk (3 victims) DANK Even the almost always irreverent TMQ isn't going to dunk too hard on Ukrainian players. No one can guess what issues are happening for them behind the scenes right now that may or may not affect their level of play. One could argue that makes them unreliable picks for the game we are playing, though.
Alize Cornet (1 victim) STANK This pick would have been awesome if it had been made on the day that Cornet was playing.
Anett Kontaveit (1 victim) DANK Kontaveit kind of sucks on clay, but this was still an inexplicable loss.
Linda Noskova (1 victim) DANK This was the gutsiest pick of all the losers, and it could have happened for you. Last year's junior champ here showed she has the goods to be a force to be reckoned with, at least on this surface.
And now we are all caught up on the R128 non-winning action. TMQ will return tomorrow to hopefully berate a whole new slate of losers!
by JTContinental Day 4 dawns with picks that seem like good ideas now, but how will we feel about them in 12 hours? After 4 no picks, we are down to just 80 after 1 round of play.
Day 4 picks:
Jil Teichmann 27
Angelique Kerber 12
Amanda Anisimova 11
Coco Gauff 7
Elise Mertens 6
Victoria Azarenka 5
Ajla Tomljanovic 4
Leylah Fernandez 2
Petra Kvitova 2
Camila Osorio 2
Magda LInette 1
Maria Sakkari 1
by
joanjettson I could blame my excitement for tonight's "Survivor" finale for my rare No Pick, or the drink I had after work, but really it was work.

by JemB Bummers. I forgot to make my pick on Day 3; thought about it, set it aside and then forgot it! Better luck next time to me. My first time playing and you do a GREAT job with this. I'll be back! Kudos to the organizers for doing this first rate!
by ponchi101 A question has been asked about the possibility to chose Zidansek for Day 5 of the WTA SP. The post is in the actual topic of picks.
by JTContinental DAY 5 PICKS ANNOUNCEMENT
Mayar Sherif has withdrawn, giving Zidansek a walkover, and making one less match to choose from when making picks. I don't think anyone has picked her already, but if you have, you must go back and make a new pick.
by JTContinental Let's start Day 5 with our (up until now) winners, and then TMQ will examine the corpses from yesterday to see what drove them to make their awful pick. We lost 1 more player today with a no pick, leaving us with 69 remaining afloat
Day 5 breakdown
Daria Kasatkina 17
Veronika Kudermetova 15
Elena Rybakina 13
Simona Halep 8
Karolina Pliskova 7
Jessica Pegula 3
Ekaterina Alexandrova 2
Danka Kovinic 2
Jelena Ostapenko 1
Aryna Sabalenka 1
by JTContinental And now for the losers--I'm afraid there wasn't much DANKness to be found amongst your remains. It wasn't even a hot day in Paris yesterday, yet the air is full of STANK
Ajla Tomljanovic (4 victims): STANK TMQ does not advise picking a rando that just caused a major upset in the tournament, because the letdown in the next match is all too often real. Tomljanovic put up a fight, but it was a STANKy one.
The Ghost of Petra Kvitova (2 victims): STANK This could have been a nostalgia pick, because I can't imagine anyone who has watched Kvitova play this year would make this choice. Barring a deep run at Fake Wimbledon this year, TMQ has officially relegated her to Granny status. Don't read this, nelslus.
Camia Osorio (2 victims) STANK As TMQ currently watches Leolia Jeanjean (who incidently has even wilder hair than Katerina Siniakova) pounding Karolina Pliskova, I believe it is not a good idea to bet against the French wild cards this year. As for Osorio herself, I see flashes of the talent that she is reported to have, but it's not fully there yet.
Magda Linette (1 victim) STANK See Ajla Tomljanovic ^^
Maria Sakkari TMQ will award this a faint DANK as Sakkari was the undoubted favorite (although I think she's overranked because of the stupid WTA covid ranking system--don't read this Megan Fernandez). I might have left this match alone though, because the only reason that Muchova isn't in or near the top 10 is that she's been injured for months and is working her way back into form.

My vanity is bigger than my convictions, so I rather enjoyed the name-check.

by ponchi101 So, Jellybean strikes again. I mean, Jeanjean. That's got to be Jellybean in french, for sure.
Not that KaPlis is an accomplished clay courter, but she has reached the finals of Rome twice. I find this to be a large upset.
Now, we only need a male player called Jolie Rancher...
by Liamvalid I picked Kovinic to beat Schmeidlova, spent hours convincing myself if was too close a match to call and swapped my pick to Halep. Kovinic just won in straight sets. If Halep loses I will cry
by Suliso No reason to think Halep would lose.
by
ponchi101 The same reason to think that Jabeur would lose

It is the WTA. NOBODY, and I do mean NOBODY (except Iga) is safe. Let's watch Liam suffer for an entire match

Three times to the Rome final and won once. It's an upset for sure. A large upset? Depends on how you view Pliskova in a major. Despite being somewhat more reliable in the last several years, her default is an early round exit, it's the deep runs that remain outliers. She's had a single run at RG despite the success at Rome. Doesn't make sense, but it is what it is.
by jazzyg The Kovinic match had some suspense.
After going up 6-3, 5-3, she got broken at love serving for the match after not facing a break point in her previous five service games. Then, serving at 5-all in the game that probably determined the winner, she saved two break points in a 24-point game before finally holding for 6-5. Not sure I would have liked her chances if she had dropped that game, but she broke easily to finish it off.

by jazzyg Pliskova's record for the year until last week was 2-6.
In her current form, losing to anyone is not an upset, and Jeanjean qualifies as anyone.

Happy I couldn’t watch that one then!

I'm riding shotgun here, except Pegula/Sabalenka instead of Kovinic/Halep. I'm glad I didn't stick with Pegula - the match would have given me a heart attack. Sam ewiht you and Kovinic - did you really want to suffer through that?
Halep's a fighter and a past champ here. I wouldn't count her out.

She kicked me off the SP before by losing to people ranked way below her. And here she’s done it again

Sawry. Stings. But Zheng has been hyped, one reason I stayed away from the match.

I knew I’d made a mistake! I thought either Halep would lose, or go to win the tournament, blocking me from beating the draw because I’d already picked her. Oh well, cest la vie! Last night in Paris I’m sure I’ll get over it once I hit the bar

I was already dead, but I see the infamous Suliso jinx at work here. We all see what you did!
by JTContinental We start Day 6 with 49 players remaining after 2 more no picks. More than half of the players have crowded the bandwagon.
Day 6 Breakdown
Elise Mertens 27
Martina Trevisan 10
Sloane Stephens 7
Angelique Kerber 3
Amanda Anisimova 1
Daria Saville 1
by JTContinental And now for yesterday's losers, I will rate your pick as DANK or STANK. Please note that it smells much better in here today, except for one especially STANKy corner.
Simona Halep (8 victims) DANK This was TMQ's Day 5 pick, so of course it was the correct one, and that it is Simona who is actually wrong.
Karolina Pliskova (7 victims) STANK TMQ watched that match in its entirety, and while Leolia Jeanjean and her Patty Schnyder-put-her-finger-in-a-light-socket hair hit some of the DANKest crosscourt backhand angles I have ever seen, Pliskova countered by standing stone-footed at the baseline in the middle of the court like a steaming mound of hot Paris garbage and loaded the net with STANK by firing every groundstroke directly into it.
Ekaterina Alexandrova (2 victims) Lightly DANK TMQ did not watch this match, but it looks like it was competitive and Begu is a solid journeywoman--perhaps not the wisest pick, but TMQ is also not mad at it.
Jelena Ostapenko (1 victim) DANK Competitive again, and Cornet can be streaky. However, the French women seem to be on a mission so far, so pick against them at your peril.

by
kknudsen I picked Cornet to win tomorrow (Saturday). Crazy I know! But I want her to win

. Her run at the AO was inspirational and a joy to watch. I hope she finds equal success and joy tomorrow in front of her compatriots … and then she can lose to Iga on Monday!
by JTContinental It's day 7! Watch out for the zombie roaming the premises; hopefully they will shuffle off harmlessly by tomorrow. We only lost 4 competitors yesterday, so there are 45 hopefuls just 1 win away from a coveted spot in the Update Picks & Results thread. SHOWDOWN SATURDAY <air horns> guarantees that not everyone will make it as we have picks from both sides of the Zheng/Cornet and Rybakina/Keys matches. We also have a bandwagon that I would describe as dubious, but we'll see if Jeanjean can keep whipping that backhand crosscourt the way she has been.
Day 7 breakdown
Irina-Camila Begu 16
Aryna Sabalenka 6
Qinwen Zheng 5
Alize Cornet 4
Elena Rybakina 4
Daria Kasatkina 3
Madison Keys 3
Paula Badosa 2
Jessica Pegula 2
by JTContinental I hadn't done any scoreboard checking before posting, and the bandwagon looks much less dubious than I though
by JTContinental And now, some (sort of) unusually kind words for our losers
Angelique Kerber (3 victims) STANK This pick had diminishing returns each round and TMQ decrees you waited one round too long to pull the lever on this one. Should she have won? Yes. Should you have known she wouldn't win? Also yes.
Daria Saville (1 victim) DANK Saville was just as angry as you for not winning this giftwrapped match, cracking a racquet completely in half in frustration at one point. Her rise back up the rankings has been quick, and she might be back in seeded territory by the US Open.

I am in the Rybakina tram. Now that I see that some people even picked Keys to win, I am more certain we won't make it. I was counting on Keys irregularity but obviously other people know more.
Keys 3 & 4. It was a good SP for me

by jazzyg I watched almost every point of the Saville match, and she got outplayed by Trevisan, who was very opportunistic at coming to the net and finishing off points with great approaches and good volleys. It looked like Saville's only game plan was to hit high balls to Trevisan to take advantage of her 5-3 height, but it didn't work, and she could not hit enough winners from neutral positions to win the match.
Agree Saville is on her way back up, but her M.O even when she was at her best was sloppy mistakes at crucial times. She knocked me out of a suicide pool many years ago at the Aussie Open against Suarez Navarro after taking an early lead, then falling apart.
by hoangers For me, Sabalenka and Keys are very similar in that they both have a lot of power but make so many errors. This unpredictability is why I would not pick these two players past the first two rounds of a major tournament LOL even though I know that they've had prior successes. They are just too much of a wild card.

It is the reason I picked AGAINST her today. She can go through spells that are downright Navs/Graf/Serena, and then she can go for an entire set without finding the court.
Her game is magnificent, when she is on. But as you say, when she is not...
by JTContinental Round 3 is complete, and only 29 survived today to advance to the Updated Pickss & Results thread. I will be closing this thread at the start of play for Day 8, but feel free to party on in her for now.
