by JazzNU Rough draw for Garbine. You have to assume she took a wild card here to get some matches under her belt since she so rarely plays at the 250 level in her career, and she draws one of the hottest teens on tour? That's unfortunate.

by Suliso True and she lost in straight sets... #3 seed Cornet is out as well.

by ponchi101 Garbie has faded, and it seems she is unable to get any traction. By now, it can't be injuries; she has been off the tour long enough to recover. but she may be in one of those vicious circles: she doesn't win, so she gets very little (if any) competitive time on court, so she goes into the next tournament with no matches under her belt, so she loses and... repeat.
She has to start playing 250's. See if she can get some wins, and that winning feeling. Let's remember Agassi did it, ages ago. Went all the way down to Challengers (played two, and lost both finals). But that got him back on track by playing several matches in a row.

I missed her doing that. Garbine played well for that one good stretch in the 2nd half, enough so that she should've been able to force a third set. But she really didn't have it today.

And not helping that Noskova had a unexpectedly brief Aussie Open that she's got to be looking to erase. She played great.

Only that he went down to the Challengers to get some rhythm. Other than that, indeed different.
I don't know about you but, for me, even when I was young it always took me a good couple of weeks of training to get my timing. Sampras was famous for getting his touch back very quickly. I don't know if Garbie could use 3, 4 matches in a row to get some of that back. But losing in 1R at the Aussie and now here is not going to give her rhythm.

I know many need matches to regain their timing. Personally, my timing would come back quickly, but I was never not playing a sport at that time, which might have helped. If it wasn't tennis, it was another sport in between those breaks for the most part.

It's nice to see Garbine give this tournament a go, but a shame it likely didn't achieve what she needed. If she's playing in Doha and Dubai, hard to not see early exits there, but hopefully I'm wrong.

by Deuce It's all about confidence (or lack thereof).
I think that's the 'vicious circle' - you need confidence to win... but if you don't win, you don't get confidence...

No, it's not. Different player, same name.

Younger Ekaterina is the one born in 1996 and has mostly been playing the Challenger circuit and never been ranked higher than the 200s - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ekaterina ... born_1996)

Ekaterina born in 1988 aka Katya that we all know and was ranked in the top 10 during her career remains retired and living in Moscow. Going by photos, since her IG is in Russian, I believe she does some coaching with young players, perhaps regularly.

by JazzNU Fantastic win by Zidansek over Fruhvirtova. That forehand is still world class and it did damage. Had almost twice the number of winners than Linda did. I hope she's able to make her way back to the top 50. She's a fun player to watch.

by ponchi101 I had Fruvirtova winning in predictions. So it figures ;)
I also have a soft spot for Zidansek. She played the finals here in Bogota a couple of years ago, against Camila, and it was a hellacious match for her. The crowd was borderline out of control. The TV analyst I was watching almost called her names. Yet she behaved very well, and after losing, was gracious. So, points for her.

Neat

I did notice when I was looking up Makarova 1.0 that there were two other entries with the same name, but I just assumed they were multiple entries.

by JazzNU Also, I saw this today. I think it's the first time I've seen her face, there's no photo on the WTA site. Maybe she's making her way up the rankings and we'll hear more of her. This topic has come up before so she's at least getting into WTA qualifying now and then in the last year and a half or so.

Camilla played such a great match! I cannot believe she managed to pull that out in 2 sets. To say Jule is likely not having a good night is an understatement, she's got to be so disappointed to not have at least gotten it to 3 sets. She was the one that broke first each time (except for the last) if I remember right, only to have Camila get the break back. The way she fought was truly impressive. She may not ever have a pro career to match her junior career, but she really seems like she's going to be able to be on tour for a long while with her game. She's very easy to root for, great energy on court.

by ashkor87 The trouble with playing Challengers is there are some pretty good players there too, and losing there would surely demotivate someone used to being a big star...not
Everyone needs match practice .I don't think Agassi or McEnroe ever did..

by ponchi101 Timing is such an elusive thing. And it is one thing that can go away quickly.
When Mac went away (1985) and took his 6 months sabbatical, he never came back the same. His touch was a step below.
I am assuming you are resuming our conversation about Garbie. What do you think she should do?

I would guess Muguruza's problem has to do with motivation, maybe distractions, personal etc, which is mostly none of our business...
COS is a great defensive player, not likely to win a major but could win some tournaments on faster surfaces ,( which are few, and getting fewer!)

by JTContinental Nice week for Alycia Parks, into a main tour semifinal for the first time and taking out seeds Martic and Kovinic in the process.

by ti-amie MCOS win over Noskova was surprising to me because she had to come from behind in the first set, something she doesn't usually do well.

by JazzNU Bianca was up 6-0 5-1 on Kostyuk and had to win it in a tiebreak.

Another excellent win for Camilla! Even better than the last. She's had quite a week.

Haven't watched Zanevska play much in the past, but a great win over Potapova. If she can keep this form up, seems like she's on her way to a career high ranking this season.

I didn't realize that. Maybe something clicked for her this week and she's going about it a different way now. Because she was down to Jule last round multiple times and was able to fight back. It was the thing I came away from that match most impressed by.

by ashkor87 The court is reasonably fast, good for mcos

by ashkor87 There is a tournament in Colombia and MCOS not playing that?! It is a 125 series, but still...patriotism?!

by ponchi101 A 125 will do nothing for her. She will be here for the Bogota cup, for sure, which is important to her.

Shoulder injury

by ashkor87 Garcia won't be able to attack Parks' serve the way she has been doing to everyone else..makes for an interesting dynamic..
I have stuck my neck out earlier on this forum to suggest that Parks has more up-side than Coco ...we shall see over the year. But since she is starting pretty low, and Coco is starting pretty high, the 'more upside' is almost a given.

by ti-amie I've been watching Parks for a couple of years now. She's shown improvement during that time. Cori has a lot of technical faults in her game and the window may have closed on a coach being able to fix them. As you say we'll see.

Again, Alycia Parks is 4 years older than Gauff, so you can't really compare them.

by ashkor87 Chronological age doesn't matter, Gauff has been around longer than Parks

by ponchi101 Parks turned pro in 2017. Coco un 2018,
Coco has been around the top longer than Parks, but Parks even has more wins (136 to 132). Problem: she has way more loses (132 - 67).

About Coco's technical weaknesses. I don't see them. I know people talk a lot about her FH being a weakness but, she can belt it. And that did not stop Edberg from being a top player.

Someone informed her that she hadn't retired from a match yet in 2023, and that she must do so in order to maintain her reputation as the WTA's most fragile player.
Emma's giving her a run for her money - so every retirement and withdrawal counts!

True, but let us also note that Hingis was a grand slam champion at 16, so was Tracy Austin.

by Deuce Yes... the fact that Gauff hasn't won a Major yet surely means that she will never win one, and that her career is doomed to failure...

Add the fact that, apart from Hingis and Austin (and Seles), 99.5% of the other female Major winners throughout history had also won their first Major by age 18 - so Gauff is clearly and obviously well behind everyone else here....
Ok... well, that's actually not true at all... Hmmmm..... I guess that means that winning a Major by age 18 is a rare accomplishment (it hasn't happened since Kuznetsova in 2004, which obviously means that all of the young players over the past 20 years have been just as 'terrible' as Gauff!). So - if one hasn't won a Major yet by the 'ripe old age' of 18, it really means... absolutely nothing - especially as the player in question here is the only player under 20 years old currently ranked in the top 30. So it seems that she's doing quite well...

This view of Gauff being pretty much 'washed up' at 18 is well beyond bizarre.
Everyone is free to have their own perspective on things, of course... but it would certainly help if some degree of reality were considered in the process of forming the opinion.

Coco's forehand weakness shows up only under pressure..have to watch for a while before it shows up..basically what happens is she doesn't give herself room on the forehand, gets cramped and pushes/spoons the ball back weakly..doesn't even reach the service line sometimes, then her opponent can jump on it.
So if you pound it repeatedly, you will get a weak return.. funnily enough, when her opponent keeps the ball far away from her, she had no problem, because she can't get too close to it...

by ashkor87 wow! Parks has taken the first set against Garcia!

Ok. If it shows only under pressure, then it is not THAT much technical as, perhaps, preparational. My FH is my weak side, and I remember, when I was younger, that my problem was my speed. In getting to the ball fast enough, I actually got there too soon and also cramped my stroke. I ended up hitting a lot of bad forehands because I had to scoop them. My running FH was fine, and actually a stroke I enjoyed.
As you say, I would have to watch it (a tough deal with the kind of coverage we get here). But it seems odd that nobody could correct that. If the mechanics of the stroke are fine, telling her to simply take more steps, but smaller ones (to position herself better) should be an easy fix.
Call Connors, Evert or Wilander. They were masters at that (Rafa is recovering, so, not available).

Coco has been around the top longer than Parks, but Parks even has more wins (136 to 132). Problem: she has way more loses (132 - 67).
I've never seen Parks before today, in fact had barely heard of her. She was ranked around 150 as recently as the US Open. What's happened that she's all of a sudden a hot commodity? Some big technical change, or did she have a lot of injuries?

The best thing about this match is that there's absolutely no unnecessary grunting or shrieking, just tennis.

Most of them have already been either coached away or she has made good improvements on. She’s immensely owchable si I’m not sure why that narrative is perpetuating.

She didn’t play on the junior circuit so May not have had much funding until recently

by ashkor87 Parks is a very good volleyer too .fearless approaches and deft touch. She is good for the game..a welcome new star!

I had not heard of her till her first tournament win a few months ago..also in France..maybe she should move to France! I haven't seen anything on her in the media in 2021, for instance..media not doing its job? Could be just that I haven't seen them.

by ti-amie Before we anoint her a new star lets see how she handles the pressure cooker of the US Spring Hardcourt Swing.
