by ashkor87 nothing jumps out as a potential big upset...

by ponchi101 Nakashima over Shapo? Denis has not done anything as of late.
But sure, that is not a big upset.

by ponchi101 ABOUT THE POLL
Because many have said that Alcaraz is a lock to win this one, you can also choose players that may be the upset. You get 6 votes, and you can spread them, with a maximum of three votes to a single player. For example.
Alcaraz 3
Medvedev 2
Novak 1

That way you spread your votes. Or you can have only two players, each one with 3 votes.
Hope it is clear.

by ashkor87 Surprise second weekend..Rusuuvuori

by ti-amie I think Carlitos has a tough draw.

I take it back. Still thinking about my choices...

by ponchi101 Rusuuvuori in the second weekend. For that he needs to go through Grigor (doable) and Sinner (possible). Sure, why not?

Hmmmmm.......that's a solid semi. It's possible that Coric could get there, there are opportunities. That section is wide open. Coric has only made 1 QF in 27 GS appearances, however.

by Suliso I would still bet on Medeved or Zverev in that section albeit not with any great confidence.

yes, I was actually trying to see who might get lucky with the draw...these majors often have at least one surprise semifinalist.. usually a lucky draw beneficiary..

i would be happy if either of them made it but somehow, I dont have a good feeling about it..

by ponchi101 Zverev has not fully recovered, and I don't mean physically. His BH is simply doing no damage. I don't see him going far.
Medvedev must be the one guy really, really wanting for this to start. I decided to gamble a bit and say he takes the cake.

by ti-amie I also really, really like his kit. One of the better efforts by Nike in recent years.

by ti-amie

All Cobolli could do was stare because who does that?

The third set was an almost continuous highlight reel from Carlitos.

by ponchi101 I will give Cobolli credit too. He hit some very nice FH's.
And about Carlitos' shorts: I don't get the airplane flaps. Like... exhaust afterburners?
(Sinner also has them).

That's my only criticism of the kit. When I first saw it I thought the design went around the bottom of the shorts but like you said they're like flaps on a plane. Maybe they're designed that way to give the thigh more room and allow for less restriction in movement? Just a guess.

This will sound harsh but this section was made to order for Medvedev. With him out while there are still three seeds in the mix it's wide open.

by ponchi101 Coric could be the one coming out of this section. DeMinaur has the wheels but on clay, I would not chose him over Borna.

by ti-amie I would love to see Coric come through but he loses the plot sometimes and the pressure on him as the highest remaining seed could get to him.

Which is why I thought we might see Coric in the semis..Medvedev was always a fragile high seed ..

by jazzyg I am flying blind here because I can't watch, but I think everyone is underestimating Seyboth Wild's form. I like him to go far now.

by ti-amie This was just posted on Reddit's r/tennis. Has anyone else seen this? I'm not watching the match.
Unfortunately didn’t snap a photo when they showed it during the changeover after the first set of his match with Fucsovics. Looked like a round, black, dime-sized disc (maybe metal or ceramic?) right on the middle of his chest taped in place with a big piece of clear tape. Neither announcer knew what it was. Any ideas?

Even when I try to be funny, I can't:

Novak Djokovic’s Iron Man-like device that ‘turns body heat into light’

As always, with all these "devices" and "sciences", they inevitably talk about "balancing your energies". And it is made of "nano-crystals".
It will sell like hot cakes.

why limit it to max of 3? I would have given 4 to Alcaraz and 2 to Novak, 0 to the rest...doesnt change the calculation, i dont think..?
but I do like the idea of letting us split/spread the votes..

by ashkor87 looking at the poll, interesting that Sinner and Fritz have support, but not Tsitsipas and Rublev.. these last 2 have clearly fallen in our estimation lately!

No reason whatsoever. I just felt that this way people would spread their votes in the 3-2-1 fashion, although 3-3 is also possible.

Round of 16 set in the men's top half...

(1) Alcaraz v Musetti (17)
(Q) Ofner v Tsitsipas (5)
(3) Djokovic v Varillas
(11) Khachanov v Sonego

by ponchi101 I actually give Musetti a bit of a chance. A BIT.
Tsitsipas could fly to Athens and spend the weekend there.
Varillas: he has played 5 matches at grand slams. All have gone 5 sets. That streak ends miserably here.
Kjachanov has become a reliable player to go deep at slams. That streak continues.

by skatingfan First Peruvian in the top 100 since Jaime Yzaga?

by ponchi101 Since Lucho Horna, who (BTW) beat Roger here, in 1R, in 2004.

by jazzyg I am finally free to watch tennis after a week of nonstop work.

On the bottom half of the draw, I would not count out Etcheverry from making the final. I knew nothing about him until this clay season, but he has been playing really, really well. My pick before the tournament was Rune and I'll stick with him, but if he gets to the quarterfinal against Ruud, that will be a very emotional, draining match and he might come out flat in the semis.

On the top half, I favor Alcaraz over Djokovic in their inevitable semi, but since I've seen next to nothing of either of them so far, I don't really have a good feel for it. When they played in Madrid last year, Alcaraz won almost every extended point. Djokovic will have to serve extremely well when they play.

by ponchi101 Rune looking in trouble right now, and Etcheverry is the popular pick in the SP today. But, let's remember, he is the unseeded player in that match. i say he wins, but... Nishioka never quits one single point.

by jazzyg Nishioka should have lost in straight sets the last round and won only because Seyboth Wild wasn't fit. At least that's what I assumed from the scoreline. Did not see any of the match. No doubt he is incredibly tenacious, but he will need to up his game significantly. Possible, but not likely in my estimation.

by ti-amie Nishioka lost the first set in a TB after coming from behind. He's starting the second set the same way he did the first with Etcheverry breaking for a 2-0 lead.

by ashkor87 Khachanov giving Djokovic exactly the kind of tune-,up he needs! Hitting his stride now...

by ashkor87 Not terribly impressed with Rune's latest performance...Ruud may well beat him now...

That was straight up stupid of him.

by ashkor87 Alcaraz biggest weakness, I think, is he is over-coached..I think he got confused on court at Rome....I see him looking at his box too often already...

by ponchi101 It is the new norm, and it is not Carlitos' weakness. Everybody is doing it. The new crop will look turn and look at their boxes after every single routine point, regardless of winning or losing it. Their opponents serve a DF? They turn, fist-pump, and exchange words with their coach, dad, mom, physio, assistant coach, manager, valet, chauffer, psychiatrist, therapist. And dog.
He is looking a bit lost out there, to tell you the truth.

by ashkor87 Very very sad and disappointing end..first 2 sets were great tennis though...
Will it be Zverev or Ruud now? Very hard to say,.Zverev is certainly the better player at his best but is he at his best,? Is 90% good enough?
