Sarcasm? :)

Tiafoe-Nadal? I think it will fall flat but I'll check it out.

Collins-Sabalenka is a popcorn match I have been waiting for! Also looking forward to watching Neimeier, and Iga's form through a full match. I haven't seen her play a full match yet. All of the women's matches look good to me.

by ashkor87 No sarcasm..just nothing unexpected will happen, I think ..Collins will beat Sabalenka comfortably, I expect...

by ponchi101 You have truly different perspectives. The #19 seed beats the #6 seed and that is "nothing" unexpected to you?
If we were ever to meet in person we would need like A LOT of wine. A LOT (or I would, I do not know your alcohol status). It would be hours of conversation.

by ponchi101 Straightforward win by Rublev. I felt it would be more competitive.

ponchi101 wrote: Mon Sep 05, 2022 5:40 pm Straightforward win by Rublev. I felt it would be more competitive.
It's hard for Norrie to be competitive when he spends a good stretch of the match landing his backhands in New Jersey.

by Suliso Rublev got the second life after escaping Shapovalov. I wonder if the same effect will work with Sabalenka.

by ponchi101 Anybody willing to call the Neimier upset of Iga?

by jazzyg I thought the Rublev-Shapovalov match was the best of the tournament. Too many people making assumptions about that match based on their form entering the U.S. Open. Rublev is one-dimensional and never has played his best at the slams, but if he ever plays one of these events like he has 500-level tournaments in the past, he is capable of beating anyone. I'm not predicting it will happen here, but it might.

by Suliso Not calling it, but I give it a non zero chance. In my opinion Iga has not been playing well. Of course it can only happen if Niemeier herself plays her A game.

by Suliso Pegula way too steady for Petra. Sometimes rankings do indicate something...

by jazzyg Pegula is incredibly underrated. There was no way a one-dimensional ball basher like Kvitova was going to hit through her.

Pegula would have won the Canadian Open if Halep had not made a dramatic adjustment after getting clobbered in the first set of their semifinal and started hitting her high balls, which she could not handle. (Halep has more variety than people think). It is so nice to see a player who hits under control instead of mindlessly going for winners from anywhere on the court.

by ponchi101
Suliso wrote: Mon Sep 05, 2022 6:07 pm Pegula way too steady for Petra. Sometimes rankings do indicate something...
But they would not indicate a 3&2. That looks very well for Jessica.

by ti-amie Niemeier is up 5-2 over Iga first set and is serving for it.

by ti-amie Chanda is calling the match.

by ti-amie

There were nerves - three double faults in that game - but she takes the first set. Iga leaves the court to change her kit it looks like.

by Suliso Great call ponchi! I was too hesitant... Hard to see a way back for Iga in this one.

by ti-amie Chanda said that Iga is getting to the balls but doesn't have much behind her returns. The first set stats are a bit of a surprise.

by ti-amie

by ponchi101 Iga has to recalibrate her returns. She is trying to hit winners of all serves, and missing too much. And then, gets frustrated and the cycles closes.

by Suliso Meanwhile Rafa has lost the first set. Also a bit surprising.

by ponchi101 A lot of very hard hit FH's from Tiafoe are landing in, and he is pushing Rafa all over. With Tiafoe, the thing is: how long can he keep that up?

by patrick Nadal getting treated by a trainer off court

by Suliso

Probably not very long, but then again reminds me of a match with Lukas Rosol.

by ponchi101 Which Rafa lost, right? And Tiafoe looks very focused, which is very good for him.
He is not celebrating more than one fist pump. After that, he is back in the match.

by ti-amie

by jazzyg The best match of the year was Kyrgios-Tiafoe in Wahington. Kyrgios saved match points in the second set tiebreak and Tiafoe went away in the third set. His staying power definitely is a question.

by ti-amie Niemeier has double faulted herself into a corner. She's down 2-0 in the third set.

by meganfernandez
ti-amie wrote:Niemeier has double faulted herself into a corner. She's down 2-0 in the third set.
Iga is not playing the best tennis of the tournament by far. But this is a good example of champions winning they aren’t playing their best. Chanda pointed out that Swiatek’s intensity hasn’t dipped. That contributes to pressure on the opponent and helps them crack.

Not over but Jule would have to find something special now.

by Suliso Jule is not happening today. I'd say Pegula will be an easier opponent. Jessica is very steady, but I don't think that's a great recipe for beating Iga.

by jazzyg Pegula just beat her 6-1 in the third set in Washington.

by Suliso I know, but that's not in a Slam. Plus I think Swiatek is playing better than in Washington, just not as good as in the spring.

Of course I'm not betting my savings on this or any other outcome in this tournament. :)

I don’t think Iga’s form today will beat Pegula. She will have to step it up.

by ti-amie Niemeier got tight and never recovered. Iga just had to maintain her focus. Pegula will be ready for her.

by JTContinental Pegula just clocked an in-form Kvitova, so I expect her to compete against Iga.

by Suliso My prediction - Swiatek beats Pegula, but falls to either Collins or Sabalenka in SF's.

Btw the first USO QF for Iga. I haven't double checked, but I believe she's the only one to reach three Slam quarters this year.

I was just going to post about this. Amazing.

by Suliso Rafa will have to go five if he's to survive.

by ponchi101 Tiafoe's FH is working wonders. And Rafa's serve is not giving him any free points. It looks very good for Tiafoe.

by Suliso Tiafoe is protecting his serve very well. Nadal has only had two break points so far. That's not enough.

Pegula reached the QF this year at the Australian Open, French Open, and here at the US Open.

by Suliso Thanks. I should have double checked...

by ponchi101 Starting to look like it is over.

by Suliso This is a huge result. Very high chance now of a new GS champion!

by JTContinental Wow he did it. Even when he was up 0-40 in that last game, I still didn't think it would happen

by meganfernandez How wonderful. Love it for Foe. I hope he can keep it going. I think Wayne Ferreira is his coach. Cilic is the only GS winner remaining, right? I think Kyrgios and Berrettini are tied for the favorite. Alcaraz lurking.

Yes, Cilic is the last GS winner standing. Alcaraz definitely can take him out tonight. it should be an interesting match.

by ponchi101 His best match ever? I guess this is his level when he plays controlled tennis.
Good for Frances, and I hope he can keep this level.

by nelslus I mean, I'll point out that, clearly, Rafa is not at his best. He must be in a good amount of physical pain. Still- great result for Tiafoe.

by texasniteowl so I missed the first 2 sets completely...and I'm with nelslus...Rafa didn't look himself/at his best...any particular clues? did his stomach tear recur or did he just not recover well from previous matches?

by ponchi101 Could be part of the "How much do you have to play before a slam?" conversation. His serve was nowhere near effective; I felt he was tossing it a bit lower to avoid having to stretch too much. But he looked out of rhythm during his second match, too.
I say he cancels the rest of the year. Baby on its way, he has no points to defend, really let everything heal.

by ponchi101 And washed-out Karo Pliskova makes the QF's.
And I would love for her to win it.

by jazzyg That would mean two robots with zero personality had won back to back slams.

But at least Rybakina plays with an ounce of creativity. Pliskova is like watching paint dry for me.

by ponchi101 Indeed. But I like the quiet types, and you can't be more quiet than Karo.
Unless you are Rybakina, as you say.
I just think Karo has worked hard all her life, and sort of "deserves" it. Which I know applies to about 10 other players too, but I sort of like her. The limited-handicapping movement is endearing.

by meganfernandez Serving at break point, 5-3 ad out, Sabalenka changed her racket between first and second serves. Didn't look like a broken string. Wozniacki said she's never seen that. She won the point. Then on her set point, she double-faulted. Got it back and hit a second-serve ace to win the set.

by ponchi101 Collins slowly melting.

by Owendonovan The serving in this match is some of the worst I've seen.

by ponchi101 And Sinner is becoming quiet adept at this: blowing his opponent in the first set, gain an early advantage in the second, and then lose the set. He had Ivashka dead and ready for burial, and here they are, 1-1.

by meganfernandez Didn’t know Sabalenka was down 6-2, 5-1, two match points in R2. Almost exactly like Wozniacki when she won the Aussie - was down MPs at 5-1 in the third in R2 that year

Said she changed her racket between serves because she felt it was way too loose.

^ Yes - the biggest part of being a champion is to win the matches when you're not playing well. It's comparatively easy to win the matches where you're playing great. But to dig down deep, not give up, and keep exploring different avenues to try to win a match when you're not playing well - THAT'S what really makes a champion.

by Deuce I was going to write that Ivashka looks like he might actually win this match, ahead 3-1 in the 5th...
But since I had that thought, Sinner has come back to life and isn't missing anything.
It's as if someone said to him "Hey - YOU'RE the one who's supposed to win this!"
3-3 now...

Cilic, who I think has a good shot at beating Alcaraz, is looking good in the 2nd set - up 5-2...

by jazzyg Sinner won 19 of the last 21 points, including an incredible passing shot off a lob that he had to retrieve at the baseline.

by Suliso Alcaraz-Sinner will hopefully be a great match.

by Improbabledream Pat mcenroe and james blake debating what a foot fault is might have been more entertaining if someone was there calling the foot fault. On another note the linespeople/ human error/ drama of the challenges was almost perfect. Like before that era, the stew was a little too cold, but after acheiving perfect temperature, decided to make it too hot. Why?

They have a camera on the baselines which a human is apparently monitoring for foot faults.
But I don't believe they have a camera on the centre line for same.
When was the last time anyone remembers a centre line foot fault being called? I've seen many centre line foot faults on TV and live - and none of them are called. It's like a forgotten rule or something.
I think they should extend that short centre line marker about 6 inches beyond the baseline - that would make centre line foot faults more evident.

Meanwhile, Cilic just broke, and is serving for the 4th set at 5-4...

by texasniteowl well...a 5th set for Cilic-Alcaraz...just another really late night!

by ptmcmahon Latest one yet! Good thing I'm on vacation and don't have to work in four hours :)

Cilic passed himself for the 4th latest finishing match. They fell 3 minutes short of the 3 way tie for latest finish though.

by ponchi101 Cilic's feet positioning while serving is ridiculous.
3 mm's back, and there is no issue. Are you going to tell me that you need to start your motion with your foot ON THE LINE, because, you know, that is going to give you what sort of advantage?
What the heck, he is a pro, I am not.
