by JTContinental OK, I'm only counting 16 and I'm not seeing that I missed anyone, so my count may have been off by 1 today

by joanjettson Congrats JTContinental

And thanks for this, I was wondering why I enjoyed her name so much

"Appropos of nothing, there was a movie from the 90's where Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes played drag queens call Too Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar and I think about it every time I see Jule Niemier in print."

by ponchi101 Congrats to all. Now, let's see how many little trophies we hand out by Saturday. :trophy:

by ptmcmahon If Jabeur loses today it'll be not many :) I count 12 Jabeur, 2 Gauff, 1 Garcia, and 1 Tomlajonovic today.

And some players, like myself, can't beat draw (I underestimated Pegula and took her too early I think for my strategy.) It worked out Contest Schizo wise for me in THRTNY as I have Pegula and Swiatek there and have used both here :)

by JTContinental The breakdown above is correct. Traditionally, there is a large reddening on the first day of the Updated thread, so look for us Jabeur pickers to have a great chance to join the deceased today

The breakdown

Ons Jabeur 12
Coco Gauff 2
Caroline Garcia 1
Ajla Tomljanovic 1

by Suliso There might be only two left...

by JTContinental The bandwagon is through!

by ptmcmahon I'll be out after tomorrow as now my only two players left face each other. The Gauff-Kvtitova final didn't come through for me :)

by JTContinental We are down to 13 with a zombie lurking on day 10

The breakdown

Aryna Sabalenka 7
Karolina Pliskova 4
Jessica Pegula 2

by Suliso Surprised no one took Swiatek.

by ponchi101 And only two people have taken her. Maybe the rest are up to something.

by JTContinental I do not think anyone left will be able to beat the draw. I think the Gauff loss last night threw most player's plans out of whack.

by Suliso That's not true - I see at least two players who can beat the draw with Garcia def Swiatek or vice versa.

by JTContinental I think you might be right--math is not my strong suit

by tcard I only have Swiatek so after the semis I'm done

Zombies lurking on an updated thread, really???

by Improbabledream Is New England Nitemare a reference to Matt Patricia and Joe Judge attempting to coach the offense?

I definitely deserved that. I shouldn't have posted that without looking into the situation. My bad and my error, and I should have known better

I'm sorry about that. You have every right to be mad at me. I feel terrible. I was wrong.

by PeterSkan I'm out - never committed suicide, just died of old age [ran out of picks]

by ponchi101 Way better than all other forms of dying. A good job, anyway

by JTContinental One of our remaining 7 was out of picks for today, so we start the SF with

The breakdown

Iga Swiatek 4
Caroline Garcia 1
Ons Jabeur 1

by JTContinental TMQ has been slacking on our recap duties because a) summer and b) we are not used to writing this much because everyone is usually dead far before this, but will catch everything up today

Promises, promises. That's all you trifling men can offer us. :gorgeous:

by ptmcmahon I guess before this second match had started Tog had already clinched the pool. Either Swiatek loses and he was only one to survive today, which nearly happened - or now as it turns out he is only one with a pick for finals I think. If so.. congrats Tog! (assuming the pick is "made" of course :) )

by JTContinental 5 remain--but do they have picks left? At any rate, take a day off and enjoy the men's semis, which I think will be much more fulfilling.

by JTContinental And now for the promised loser critiques. Was your loser DANK or STANK? Let's delve in!

R16 Losers

Victoria Azarenka (6 victims) DANK Azarenka made the most of her draw to get a decent result for her these days, and was smashing the cover off the ball in her matches. TMQ thought she would blast past Pliskova, who seems to have slipped a notch from the list of elite players, but too many UFEs did her in.

Petra Kvitova (6 victims) STANK No one really talks about Pegula as a top player, even though she has made the QF or better of 7 grand slam/1000 level events this year. Kvitova's matches were giving TMQ panic attacks to watch with their wild momentum swings, and she was on borrowed time here. There was no way she was going to hit through an in form player (at least then) like Jessica.

Liudmila Samsonova (5 victims) DANK Samsonova played well all summer and was poised to go pretty deep her, but Tomljanovic was playing inspired tennis all tournament and her determination and forehand were too much to handle.

Danielle Collins (1 victim) DANK TMQ will award this a light, uninformed DANK. Collins was coming back from a neck injury and her form was a big unknown. She played at a pretty high level, though--maybe? TMQ must admit to not watching many of her matches because they are too screamy, but she was winning them in a fairly straightforward fashion.

QF Losers

Karolina Pliskova (4 victims) DANK This was TMQ's pick, so obviously he was correct and Pliskova was wrong, a position she often occupies.

Coco Gauff (2 victims) DANK TMQ predicts grand slam victory will happen for her next year.

Jessica Pegula (2 victims) STANK Out of nowhere, Jessica went from a 3-1 lead in the first to suddenly not being able to put a ball in the court or hold serve. Props to her though for drinking a Heineken during her post-match presser, and bowing out with this quip:
D’Arcy Maine of ESPN.com: Hi, Jessica, sorry about the loss. I like the Heineken.

Pegula: Thanks. I’m trying to pee for doping — although it does help ease the loss.
Ajla Tomljanovic (1 victim) STANK TMQ suspects this person was going for the win, since nearly every remaining player picked Jabeur that day. Swing and a miss.

SF Losers

Caroline Garcia (1 victim) STANK That match literally was over before TMQ even knew it had started.

There! Nelslus said it couldn't be done, but TMQ lives to prove him wrong. Good luck to the remaining 5, if you have anyone left to pick for the final...buahahahahahahaha

by ktothem1 Congratulations, Togtdyalttai and well done. I ran out of picks with Swiatek last night, but I was happy to go this far. Thanks to all who run the pools and YCWJ.

by tcard Congratulations, Togtdyalttai and well done. I ran out of picks with Swiatek last night, but it was the furthest I have ever gotten so I am still pretty happy about it. Thanks to everyone who runs the pools

by ponchi101 Hell of a job, Tog

by shtexas Congratulations Tog. I believe you are the only one who has a pick for the final. Good luck on beating the draw!

by Togtdyalttai Thanks everyone! To be honest I'm not sure why I decided to save Jabeur instead of Garcia other than it didn't seem like as sure a win for Garcia to me as the other picks showed.

I dont get it. What happened?

by ptmcmahon Maybe NE Nightmare thought you were the zombie and defending your zombiness by insulting the Patriots? :)

by ponchi101 I am lost too.

by New England Nitemare Ptmcmahon hit it on the head. That is exactly what I thought. I know it's silly. I guess I was being super sensitive about my team.

by JTContinental Tog beats the draw! I believe that’s the first time anyone had done so since I’ve been running these contests.

by ponchi101 Indeed, first time anybody beats the WTA draw, and only the second altogether, here at TAT2.0 :notworthy:

by dave g Congratulations Tog! I think this was an especially tough year.

by Omegadoom Congrats Tog! That was an quite impressive!! :notworthy:

Thanks to JTContinental for running this SP, and for your fun commentary!

by JTContinental And that's a wrap on the grand slam year! Thanks for hanging out with me and see you in 2023
