by Ainsley So yesterday during the Alcaraz and Jarry match one of the commentators mentioned that Jarry would be playing in this tournament and would have a great chance at making an impact here.

I see him listed as an entry in the qualifying, but as for the qualifying matches I do not see him listed. Is he not playing in this tournament after all?

by Ainsley Jarry certainly doesn't have an easy way of it in his home tournament. His first match is going to be tough and it doesn't look to let up much in that half of the draw with Schwartzman and Zapata Miralles. Then having Musetti and/or Ramos-Vinolas. Don't count out Bagnis as well.

by ponchi101 Nobody is considering Diego a tough match, nowadays. Nobody.

If Jarry can get past his 1st round match he will go up against Diego. I still think Zapata Mirelles is the player to make it out of that section.

Jarry couldn't play qualies here because he was a little busy playing in Rio while the qualifying for this tournament was happening.
When this occurs (a player entered in the qualifying of a tournament can't play the qualies because he/she has gone deep in the previous week's tournament), the player is often granted a Special Exempt into the main draw (that's what the SE is for next to Jarry's name above). A Special Exempt is kind of like a late main draw WildCard for players in that situation.

The one thing that is going to benefit him is this is his home tournament and the crowd is going to be backing him all the way. That is going to help him. The top half of the draw however seems much more stacked then the bottom half and that is the half he is in.

by Deuce It seems strange that he wasn't given a main draw WildCard into his home tournament.

You would think that would be the case. I don't exactly know the ins and outs of how they determine who gets those spots though.

by Deuce WildCards are usually given to whoever the tournament wants to give them to - sometimes big names, sometimes local players, sometimes older players hanging on - sometimes even friends or clients of the tournament administrators...
From the looks of this situation, Jarry probably would have gotten a WildCard to the main draw, but they saw he was in a position for a Special Exempt, so they saved the WC for someone else.
They can give a WC to anyone... but they can only give a SE to someone under specific circumstances.

So that worked out well for the tournament then. They got two players in spots when regularly they would have only been able to get one.

by Ainsley Jarry hits the court in his home country tomorrow and also Zapata Miralles has withdrawn.

by Deuce It's nice when players get to the Final at their home tournament.
Even nicer when they win.
The first thing has been accomplished. We'll see if the second one is...

by ponchi101 It would be nice if Jarry wins it. He was derailed by injuries but, as I said before, great things were expected of him. If he can do that in the second go:

by ti-amie

by ponchi101 And Jarry makes it. Seemed like a straight forward 3rd set.
Good for him.

I tuned in when I saw this ^ - but it was too late - the match had just finished.

It's nice to win one's home tournament... but this must also be tempered somewhat with the fact that Jarry was banned for basically a year for doping in 2020. Naturally, he said it was unintentional, as pretty much everyone says. We never really know the truth, of course.
(I do believe that Halep's was unintentional, based on what I know of her character - and of Cahill's words... but, as I said - we never know the truth for sure.)
