by JazzNU Iga's fans have become quite the annoying bunch on social media. They are very displeased with the draw and don't believe it is random. They currently believe the WTA is conspiring against having Iga as the #1 ranked player and are gifting Sabalenka with easier draws this season to make her the new #1 and their chief complaint seems to be that Iga is constantly getting Rybakina in her draw.

Why are they so worried about Rybakina in her draw if Iga is the best thing since sliced bread and can beat anyone in straight sets according to them? Beats me. And I'm seriously amazed how insecure they are about her standing during the clay court season in particular.

by ponchi101 As much as I liker Rybakina, on clay I would give her a 10% chance against Iga. So, yes, why are they worried? I would give a better chance to Krejcikova or Sakkari on clay.

by JazzNU Well this is interesting. TC ended their coverage with McNally's match even though Leylah Fernandez is still playing her first set. And there's a camera on court, I can see it on streaming. Have they moved on from her as one of their future prospects? They have reason to, they just hadn't been doing that for a while.

by JazzNU I think it's hard to say Kenin looked good exactly, she clearly should've won that in straight sets. But she came through the match and elevated her game a bit at the end to close it out.

Noskova has been pretty quiet lately, but that was a good comeback win over Shelby today.

It's streaming via the App. I don't think it's fair for them to do this. For example you can stream every WTA match via the App but for the Final you need to watch it on TV. It's different for the ATP because they have TennisTV.

I still maintain that 2003 Houston YEC was rigged. Too kind for Roddick and too harsh for Federer. All three players who had positive H2H agaisnt him ended up in his group. Nalbandian, Agassi and Ferrero. That McIngvale character was shady as h*ll.

Serious question. How do you rig a draw and NOT have the other players complain about it? Federer may be a nice guy but how would he not complain about something like that?
The sole time a draw was manipulated, in the 1996 USO, remember the stink that raised? Kafelnikov walked out, all other players complained, and the draw was done again. And it was NOT the draw that was rigged; it was the seeding. If they or anybody else could rig a draw, you would not bother changing the seeding.
If draws were rigged, players would say so because if you rig the draw, somebody ends up losing. And I doubt that the losers would keep it quiet.

I don't remember the whole story precisely. At the time Federer was far from influential figure he became over the years and more grand slam titles. But I think there were some words exchanged between him and Mattress Mac and mutual displeasure that year. The feeling was that this injustice lit a fire that allowed Federer to destroy all the opposition and that was the turning point in basically all those negative head-to-heads. Roddick's year-end #1 felt hollow and undeserving precisely for the reason that it is possible that it was protected by home-cooking. Adding to the Nalbandian's and Ferrero's displeasure about very preferential scheduling (and in case of Nalbandian - preferential officiating) at US Open.

by mick1303 Also, other players were not wronged by that draw (at least not to a degree to make a fuzz about this). If I'm not mistaken, Federer was the only one with a chance to overtake Roddick if latter wouldn't make a semis and Federer wins YEC undefeated. Federer did his part, but Roddick made semis from the group with Moya, Coria and Schuettler. His group seemed weaker. Probably Agassi, Ferrero and Nalbandian had some reason to complain, but the formalities were met, meaning that 1-2,3-4 etc were seeded in different groups. And Ferrero and Nalbandian were already complaining just recently (during US Open) and probably did not want to look too whiny. Also there was no formal reason for them to complain, because the rules were not violated. They were put in a group with Federer, who before that point was losing to them. So this "injustice" was only from Federer's point of view.

Ok, but that is not rigging a draw. And, to say that the Wimby champion is not an influential figure, and Roger already had a large following, is a bit hard to accept at face value.
I have never heard that Roddick's #1 year ranking felt hollow. Again, he had won the USO and the points were there. A very slim advantage, as we could see just a couple of months later when Roger reached #1 and did not look back.
As for the preferential officiating at the USO... I have no recollection of that. I gather I will have to take your word for it.

by ti-amie Nice to see Flavia and one of their sons, Federico, in the stands. Federico later joined his father for the camera signing ritual.

by ashkor87 Rome is the first real red clay tournament at the 1000 level, Madrid is an outlier, Charleston isnt red clay. so I expect some 'surprises' - like Swiatek doing well, better than Sabalenka, and Alcaraz beating everyone, including Djokovic..
Badosa versus Jebeur is a good one too. on real, slow, red clay, Badosa shuld win.. let us see what happens.. her first round didnt inspire confidence. I am not yet convinced of Jabeur's red clay credentials- Madrid last year was a great result but she didnt do much at RG after that, becausse Madrid is different, anyway. .. . Jabeur's game is better suited to grass and hard court..same with Sinner - he needs a faster surface, I cant visualize him winning here, nor Medvedev of course..

by ponchi101 Well, "first real" is a bit too much, Ashkor. Sure, Madrid seems to be different because the results say so, but it is still played on clay. The sliding and footing remain the same.
Swiatek playing well here will be no news. Sabalenka getting far may be. Alcaraz winning is the default mode.
You don't think that Jabeur's trick shots and movement are good on clay? She moves well, has a good drop shot, can play the long rallies. If she is not injured, I think she can be a factor.

by JazzNU So happy for Taylor, she played a great match.

by JazzNU I'm shocked that Pliskova went out early since she's been playing pretty well this season, especially to a player you'd expect her to beat wherever. I set my expectations very low for Karolina at all times, but Rome is damn near her best tournament on tour for reasons unknown, so this is surprising from her.

by ti-amie

by ti-amie Petra Martic was up 4-1 in the first set and dropped it to MCOS losing the match 6-4, 6-2.

Kenin took the first set from Sabalenka 7-6(4) and is up 2-1 on serve in the second set.

Townsend def Pegula 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Apparently the h2h is in Taylor's favor?

I thought Sonya was going to blow it, when those set points just kept going away I thought it was over and thought maybe that kind of crushing loss might doom the rest of her year. So good on her for getting through that set. I hope she enjoys this win, but figures out a way to come back with the same intensity for her next match. She's had some impressive showings this year, but she's rarely followed them up with a win.

I don't remember much about Pegula as a junior, but I would guess Taylor might be very familiar with her game going back a long way. She's older than Taylor, but not by much and they are friends off court and have been for awhile. Taylor attended Jessie's wedding.

Badosa versus Jebeur is a good one too. on real, slow, red clay, Badosa shuld win.. let us see what happens.. her first round didnt inspire confidence.
Reserved forecasts, bit we got it. Sabalenka out, together with Pegula. We will have to wait and see who comes out from the bottom half.

Matteo Arnaldi with a first career win in Rome, beating 2020 runner up Schwartzman 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Having a great clay court season.

El Peque played much better than in recent matches, still not enough. Will need to defend his R16 points at Roland Garros to stay... on top 100...

by Owendonovan I love the person we see Taylor as.

by JTContinental Taylor Townsend has come back from maternity leave playing the best tennis of her life.

I set my expectations very low for Karolina at all times, but Rome is damn near her best tournament on tour for reasons unknown, so this is surprising from her.
True but I have given up trying to understand Pliskova...

by ashkor87 But nice to see Kenin doing well .she is very much a player in the Hingis mould- redirects, uses her opponent's pace...would not have worked against, say, Swiatek, but against Saba...
Bencic is probably the player closest to her in style, though Bencic is bigger and stronger...Kenin has already achieved more, though, so great to see. In my estimation Kenin is probably the best bet the US has, not Pegula or ...up-side I mean..

Drops and slices would work better on grass and hard, don't you think?

Madrid has been won by such red clay experts as Kvitova (3 times!) ..so I tend to regard it as an important tournament but too different to be an indicator for RG or even Rome...

by ashkor87 Badosa has beaten Jabeur, as expected...

by Suliso In my opinion 2022 was Jabeur's career year and she'll not approach those heights again.

by ponchi101 Reaching those heights will be hard. But losing to a fellow player who is also in a descending path, by that score, is worrisome.
I actually thought Jabeur would get this one.

by jazzyg Props to Tennis Channel for showing the Fognini-Kecmanovic second set in its entirety.

The atmosphere and Fognini's shotmaking made it the most entertaining match in its time slot, but it is unusual for a tennis network to side with entertainment value over name brand. There were no big-time matches going on, but Ostapenko-Cirstea would have been the normal choice since they were playing on a bigger court and one is a slam winner while the other is playing very well.

Fognini has been really good in his first two matches. His likely match with Rune in the round of 16 should be entertaining as well.

Badosa has been playing quite well the past month. She lost two games to Gauff in Madrid. And wasn't Jabeur coming back from an injury?

Which I would say adds to my point. She has not recovered well from that injury, and we know that sometimes that leads to a vicious circle: you are not fully recovered, come back due to the pressures of the tour, you can't play well, you get injured again and the worst scenario starts.
Badosa has played well the last month, not the last 18 months. She is down to 37. I hope they will both recover.

by ponchi101 We know about the request for absolute silence when players are playing.
But in Rome, there are adjacent courts playing at the same time. Right now, Paul and Garin are playing in such a court, and of course, when their spectators are cheering, the other court is playing, and vice versa. And it is a total mess with the "silence" rule.
And all four players are playing with no issues.

Anyone else finding these "The moment" tweets silly? The moment the #1 player won a second round match? :) Really?

by ashkor87 Re Garcia- true that she has not had the results she should ..could be a couple of things- her own serve may not have been as effective ( has it?) - she led the tour in aces a year or two ago..also, her tactic of standing well inside the baseline to return serve, may have been countered by her opponents, to whom it is not a shock any more..by serving deeper and wider..

Also watched a highlights clip of OS..the way she played against Garcia, she might have beaten anyone...

by ashkor87 Not at all surprised at Vondrousova beating Sakkari..she is a class player, coming back, it seems, now, from injury. Looking forward to seeing her do well here and at RG. Her lefty serve and wicked topspin forehand are really a lot like Nadal....work well on clay and slow surfaces with good bounce...

by ashkor87 watching highlight video of Sakkari vs V and Muchova vs Trevisan - clearly substantiates the view that while drop shots are very good at jerking your opponent out of position, they can easily be chased down on clay by the good, fast movers like Muchova.. not as outright winners as they might be on hard or grass..

by Suliso Swiatek won the last 11 games of the match...

by ashkor87 blockbuster match coming up - former RG champion Krejcikova versus Ostapenko is a clash of styles as well - pure power vs silky smooth .. unhappily, i expect power to win...

I don't mind them at all, seeing the match point and the reaction is great if you missed the match. HOWEVER, I truly do not want to see it from the top players until it's like the Semi-Finals or some hard fought QF against someone notable. I don't give a damn about the Top 10 winning their match 6-2 6-2 over like the 74th ranked player. It's a routine win as it should be, I didn't miss anything.

by JazzNU Djokovic was serving up a break at 6-4, 4-3 and lost the final three games of the 2nd set to Dimitrov. He's now up a break in the 3rd.

The problem when you have nothing to hype because everything is routine.
Yes, it is super silly.
"The moment Alcaraz did EXACTLY WHAT EVERYBODY AND HIS GRANDMOTHER knew he would do".

by Suliso Krejcikova was ahead 5-2 and then didn't win another game.

Actually, surprised. I know Alona can beat anybody, but to go on such a streak for that long, it is pretty impressive.
And, technically, Krejcikova did win one more game. She forced the TB.

by ashkor87 Muchova moving quietly through the draw, knocking off one good player after another...great to see her doing well..she is a complete player ...next up is Badosa.
Zverev vs Wolf next, will ell us a lot about how good JJW really is, and where Zverev is on his way back ..he is the only potential threat to Alcaraz and Djokovic at RG, assuming Nadal is not..

They have no other choice. He is the only solid player, at the moment, that can "replace" (because nobody can) Roger or Nadal.
If they don't do this and do not hype him, tennis' "golden era" ends two Mondays from now, when Nadal announces he is not playing RG.
(Remember the dismal ratings from the Aussie final, featuring the nicest guy in the tour Vs the best coiffed guy in the tour? They can't afford that anymore).

Was it Robert DeNiro that said "you talking to me?" ;)
Minor hiccup on the road. Do you still not give him the best chances at RG? I know, I know, I know. Novak looks better and better now for that title. But this gives Carlitos two weeks of rest.
And (serious) here, I don't understand the "actual fans of this guy". It is not as if he is lacking members of that club. :)

by mick1303 For some people over-promoting is off-putting. I caught myself being quite delighted with Alcaraz being beaten. Through no fault of his own, Alcaraz quickly becoming my least favorite player. Another fact that makes me root against him is that Nadal fans switched to him en masse.

by JazzNU This tournament has made some terrible decisions with the rain. Tiafoe's match should've stopped when they called off play on the other courts. They did this earlier in the tournament in one of Zheng's matches. They kept playing when every other court was called and on match point, her opponent slipped on the clay and they acted like it was just business as usual. The players were dripping wet when they shook hands with each other and the umpire. I thought they'd learn their lessen from that where this inconsistency isn't okay and certainly not in line with player safety rules. But I guess not. And there may have been other times this has happened as well, there have been a decent number of rain delays in the first week.

Play is suspended due to rain in Rome. I will be very surprised if there is any more #tennis tonight.

Musetti leads Tiafoe, 5-7 6-4 *2-1;
Zverev leads Wolf, 6-4 3-3;
Tsitsipas leads Sonego, 6-3.

I think he's exactly what the game needed at exactly the right time who wan't named Federer, Nadal, Murray, or Djokovic. I don't think he's a clone of any other player but someone whose play has managed to remind of all 4 of those mentioned above. I also like he doesn't have the silly "next gen" stuck to his name/game.

by ashkor87 I wonder how the court is playing after the rain.. could be the reason for some 'hard court' like results?
anyway, Tsitsi and Zverev are both doing well..people who think Zverev will go out early at the FO may be in for a surprise.. he is getting back, slowly but surely. Medvedev next for him - if he is getting back, he should be able to win that, let us see what happens.

by ponchi101 Remember they recently played at Monte Carlo, with Zverev serving for the match twice (in the 2nd and in the 3rd) and losing.
In the matches I have seen, he is not being able to dictate with the BH. Maybe the timing is a bit off.

by ponchi101 Hadn't noticed that Sinner has also adopted the "extreme back" receiving position.
Mac and Sampras must be thinking "I have a chance against these guys".

by JazzNU Very entertaining match going on right now between Badosa and Muchova. Muchova won the long second set in a tiebreak, but Badosa broke early in the 3rd and has the advantage now at 3-1.

by ponchi101 Then a good day to be in Rome. The Sinner/Cerundolo match is also very entertaining, and it is slowly becoming a Davis Cup match.

And then they watched the forehand return fly past, and realized they should stay retired.

by ponchi101 Serious here. If you had given Mac such a position in 1984, he could have easily hit the baseline line judge with his slice wide out. Sampras could have done the same in the deuce side.
Anybody that right now develops a "slice-wide out, volley to the open court" combo can do some damage.

It was a major talking point during Madrid on social media and Courier even referenced it during one of the broadcasts because it was getting so much attention. Jim and others have posited that JC coaches that consistently all the time but the microphones at Madrid were more sensitive and picking up so much more that it was getting noticed more.

This is the new norm until they decide it's too much and put in more restrictions.

Tsitsipas and Musetti on court at midnight in Rome. #Tennis just continues to blow its brains out with local scheduling. On a related note. After watching some recent matches it seems Tsitsipas has decided slice backhands just isn’t his thing anymore and is coming over the ball no matter what. Which is producing some eclectic results on anything which bounces high to that side. So rather than work on learning how to master a weakness, he’s just given up. LOL.

by ti-amie There's also a pretty big crowd watching Stefanos vs Musetti.

I love this new thing the Tsitsipas' are doing. Apostolos sitting in the stands looking like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth when we all know damn well what's going on.

Ferrero's advice to Carlitos was very comprehensive. Where to serve, where to stand, direction, height. It is a solid advantage against a lower player that can't pay a "quality" coach. You are going against Juan Carlos and Carlos (JC2 ?)

FOR sure. I've mentioned this before....I was at the Mike Bryan/Jack Sock US Open final that they won, near their coaches. The amount of coaching gong on was so beyond ridiculous. One of many, many examples of the coaching that had always been going on.

Nevertheless, I'm in the Kicking & Screaming group. I am all about letting what has always been special about tennis remain. That, you should have to figure out on your own how to win tennis matches. Just because coaching has "always" been going on doesn't mean IMO to go ahead and, rule-wise, condone and encourage this. Plenty of champion players have taken pride on not relying on on-court coaching to win.

But, yup- that train has clearly already left the station. The Tennis Muckety-Mucks ain't gonna care about what we think. :gorgeous:

Yes, I'm of the belief that part of the reason Carlito has come on so quickly and completely when he did is due to the coaching changes. The way people applaud his variety and command at this young of an age and all that, I think that's JC more guiding him through those tight windows than him just game planning those on his own. I think he'd get there eventually, but I'm thinking the consistency that he has at an exceptionally high level is not just him, but him and real-time adjustments from JC. A formidable duo.

ponchi101 wrote: Wed May 17, 2023 12:41 am How much of a chance do we give Borna against Stefanos?
I'd only say 50/50 because it's on clay. On hard, I go 60/40 or even 70/30 for Coric. Borna troubles Stefanos greatly. Stefanos did beat him after several losses the last time they played, but it was a tight 3rd set so I wouldn't say he's figured him out or anything. Stefanos also isn't playing anyhere near as good as he was down in Australia so we'll see.

I am changing my tune. Watching Ostapenko, who is also a maniacal hitter of the ball, the only way to make a winner on this slow clay involves creaming the ball.

by ti-amie Early in the first set of their match Iga, with Rybakina a40, stopped play to answer her phone, then took it to someone in her entourage to answer whoever it was and went on to win the set 6-2. I give Rybakina credit for dismissing the nonsense and taking the second set 7-6(3) playing a very good tie break.

Iga then took a long MTO and came back with a strapping on her right upper thigh to start the third set.

Has anyone ever seen a player stop play to answer their phone before?

by ti-amie And Swiatek retires at 2 all in the third.

by ponchi101 And the instance in which she seems to have injured herself was not that "dramatic"; no falls, no slips, nothing like that.
One of those injuries that are scary: no contact, and yet she retires.

About the phone incident: truly odd. And no, I can't recall anything like that.

I give Rybakina credit for dismissing the nonsense and taking the second set 7-6(3) playing a very good tie break.

Iga then took a long MTO and came back with a strapping on her right upper thigh to start the third set.

Has anyone ever seen a player stop play to answer their phone before?
I would think answering your phone (was the ringer was on?) wasn't allowed with or without on court coaching. Now, I wait for some site to proclaim match fixing.

One of those injuries that are scary: no contact, and yet she retires.

About the phone incident: truly odd. And no, I can't recall anything like that.

yes, hope not but it will happen.. too easy to come up with a scenario.. i think these players have too much to lose so I wouldnt think they would descend into such things - low-ranked players, struggling to get by, might be tempted but not players at this level, one would think..

by ashkor87 now can Rybakina survive Ostapenko? that would be a good match, Rybakina did beat her at the AO but on a much faster surface.. here, it would be much more even..60-40 Rybakina, I would say.

by ponchi101 Agree. I say Rybakina can match Ostapenko's power, and is more consistent (which is quite the statement).
The serves are nowhere near comparison.

The court is so slow that players are not getting flecks of dust on the back of their shirts. That means the clay is so clumpy it is not flying.
Yesterday Rybakina played for over two hours and her white sweater was completely clean by the end. That's how slow the clay is.

Problem is that Tsitsipas has never had a field day Vs Medvedev. H2H 4-7 Medvedev, and they have split their two clay matches.
And it is not as if Medvedev started receiving serve from the parking lot at this tournament.

by jazzyg I don't know who will win the Rybakina-Ostapenko match--I watched all of Ostapenko's quarterfinal and none of Rybakina-Swiatek--but I do believe this. Discounting movement, competitiveness and all kinds of factors that determine tennis greatness, Ostapenko is the purest ball striker in the history of women's tennis. When she is set for a shot and confident, there has never been anyone like her in ability to change direction and be accurate while absolutely crushing the ball.

The X-factor tomorrow will be Rybakina's serve, which can put Ostapenko on the defense right away. Badosa could not ever put Ostapenko on defense and watched her clock 49 beautiful winners. Having said all that, it felt like a 6-2, 6-2 destruction while watching the match, but it went to 6-3 in the third and Badosa was compromised by a balky back at the end. I'd like to believe Ostapenko can dominate Rybakina in the baseline rallies just like she did Badosa, but it will depend on Rybakina's serving and Ostapenko's mental toughness. The difference between the two in that latter department can be the size of the Grand Canyon.

NO true snark mean towards you. But....this reminds me of when, on a match broadcast, Davenport once stated (with, of course, no bias to be seen here) that, the way Keys hits the ball so hard- if she is playing her absolute best- no one can beat her.

Similarly- and, while there is no way that Ostapenko is the purest ball striker in history BTW- I mean, Serena, Steffi, Monica- she is indeed a glorious ball striker- at her best. (Like Keys can really make the ball go boom-boom at her best). The huge problem is- Ostapenko and Keys have tons of really, REALLY!!!! bad losses in their careers. Plus, Ostapenko remains out of shape (not sure why that is- who knows what is going on with any player). I've seen many matches where Ostapenko looks unbeatable. Until she, yet again, finds a way to lose. If you don't have excellent Plans B, C, etc. within your game options- your best level becomes irrelevant. So, IMO, it really doesn't matter how beautifully you can hit the ball, if you, too often, hit the ball beautifully out.

PS: AS for who will win this SF- damned if I know. I don't trust Rybakina's clay game, for now.

I watched both matches, entirely.
The score for Iga/Elena is a bit misleading. The first set was 6-2, but all first four games went to deuce; it could have easily been 2-2. Iga hit several glorious shots into the corners, which was the slight difference.
Rybakina's BH was as solid as can be; she was going crosscourt with depth and pace. In short, they were bashing the ball and Elena was more than able to stay in the match until she broke back and Iga blinked.
So, who wins? No idea; just like you say. But I say it will hinge on Ostapenko. If she can keep hitting the ball as cleanly as she was against Badosa, we may be in for a glorious match. If she is hitting them a bit out, it could be quick.

I have no doubt that Medvedev is stronger mentally. But technically and tactically his game has flaws that are exploitable. And on clay Tsitsipas is still more comfortable.

by jazzyg I stand by the greatest ball striker in tennis history* comment.

Ostapenko's biggest problem is being out of shape, which exacerbates her mental instability. The highlights they showed of her win over Halep in the Roland Garros final illustrated the dramatic difference from then and now. Yet, she is 3-0 against Swiatek and has proven she can beat anyone while having a lousy serve for the most part, poor shot selection at times and subpar movement. Go back and watch the way Seles hit the ball and compare her again to Ostapenko. The game has changed. They actually have similar games but Ostapenko hits much harder. Graf had a big forehand and a slice backhand. Keys actually hits harder than Ostapenko but is nowhere near as accurate. Serena was a clean ball striker, but it was her movement and her serve that made all the difference.

*i will pretend Ostapenko's 6-2, 6-0 loss to Samsonova in Madrid did not happen.

Thank god someone finally mentioned it. She is overweight, and it must inhibit her in some way. Does anyone ever run her side to side and try to make her winded or at least force her to hit when she is out of position? I get that she is still in decent shape - she's winning matches at the highest level - but surely she would do even better with optimum fitness. I don't understand why a professional athlete would let their fitness slip so much. It's one think they can totally control.

by ashkor87 Maybe but we must allow for differences in body types...TT, Ostapenko et al, may be perfectly fit for all we know..she doesn't seem to run out of breath nor does she decline to chase balls, so I think she is ok...definitely a threat to win on clay...

If she loses weight she might gain more endurance, but may also lose a bit of weight on her "punches" (using boxing analogy). And looking at her mentality she'd definitely prefers KOs over decisions ))

I think even allowing for body type, she is carrying quite a bit of extra weight. It's objective truth that she is winning matches at her current fitness level, but I have a hard time believing that better fitness wouldn't help her overall. She was still hitting pretty hard when she was fitter.

Obviously this is not that straightforward. But in certain situations (i.e. the player is not rushed and has enough time to set up) the extra body mass may result in generating more power. This is a question of balancing the power vs mobility/endurance.

The movement even on wet clay is still drastically different from hardcourt. Also there is no guarantee that it will be dry in Paris. Therefore Rome again is more relevant to RG results than Madrid.

I say that the final speed and power of any shot is given by how fast, and how far forward, that racquet head is moving.
Roger and Nivak are great examples. It never mattered if they were falling backwards, or sideways, or in any other possible direction (I wonder what those would be, but I am hedging here). Their leading hand was always moving forward.
Anyway, Ostapenko has never been in top shape and I don't think that is one of her priorities. She just likes to belt the ball.

Yes, everything about her is deceptive ..including her easy power..

by ashkor87 Rybakina has been quite lucky in these championships.. her opponents have been injured, one after the other. I saw Kalinina was limping even at 3-2 in the first set, very sad.
of course, not Rybakina's fault but we must not take these matches too seriously, as a pointer to the French.

Her win over Vondrousova was excellent, though..
I still would not make her better than third favorite at RG

by ashkor87 I wonder if Medvedev has a chance now, at RG? I think not..after all, it takes someone like Nadal to follow up the Italian with the French, and Medvedev is not that...

by ponchi101 Is he going to move to being the favorite now? I say no; no need to go there.
But saying that somebody that just won Rome does not have a chance at RG is also a bit extreme. He played his matches, beat some solid competitors, is doing well on clay.
And if you give Rune a chance at RG, how could you not give Medvedev a chance? He just beat Rune; the logical conclusion follows.

by mick1303 Before Rome Medvedev was #9 favorite with bookies for RG. He beat 3 players who were above him: Rune, Tsitsipas and Zverev. And this list included Nadal who obviously shall be discounted now.

by ponchi101 Saint Holger had chances. The first set should have gone to a TB. Holger forgot to keep the ball in the court, and a truly lousy drop shot attempt sealed that set.
Then he had leads in the second set, and could not. He really should be holding two MS1000 titles this season, because he also let Monte Carlo escape.

Due to Medvedev's laid back personality he may have more success in unexpected moments. I think he learned his lesson from last year and nowadays is not strongly emotionally invested. But in his case it is not interfering with his ability to put in a necessary work. At least, not yet.

by ashkor87 interesting comment by Medvedev, crediting 'softer' strings for his improved performance..gives his shots more depth, he says..

Medvedev's win in Rome feels a bit to me like Sampras winning Rome in 1994 - a great result for a player not comfortable on the surface, but more of a career highlight than a preview of future success.
I was thinking the same thing...Few people remember that Sampras won the Italian once..never won anything on clay again...I expect Medvedev to be the same
Uhm, not so fast. Sampras won the Davis Cup in 1995 on clay, in the infamous Russian tie in which the Russians soaked the courts so much that the ITF sanctioned them. Actually one of Pete's finest achievements (Courier, playing second string, lost both his matches).
But sure, no other clay court titles.

Technifibre started (as did Babolat) as only a string manufacturer (hence the name). Daniil is using their RAZOR SOFT strings, which is a new line. So he does make a good point and sales pitch.
It reminds me of a comment by Roddick years ago. He said it was not the racquets; he had been playing with the same Babolat Pure Drive since he was a kid. What was making the difference were the strings, because now you could hit as hard as you wanted and still make the ball come down.
Which was something that Babolat, in the 80's, had as a slogan for their commercials: "The ball NEVER touches your super expensive racquet".
I always tell people that. The $250-racquet with cheap strings will always play worse than the ON-SALE-racquet with a quality string job.

True but Davis Cup is always special..Stan Smith had similar heroic feats because DC meant a lot to him..beat Nastase on clay in Romania etc...
