by ashkor87 going by videos of last year's tournament (albeit a wta event), the court looks reasonably fast.. not as slow as Montreal.. Medvedev and Sinner should do well..

by ponchi101 Do they resurface every year? Or just a fresh coat of paint?

by ashkor87 i think they do resurface.. the speed is determined by the top layer anyway...

Having seen the courts in the past I'm going to say no, but maybe they just do a poor job.

That was a damn good pitch by someone who probably never threw one before today!

by ponchi101 That's pretty good for a person that has probably never thrown a Bball

by ashkor87 all 3 italians are lumped together in the same section of the draw.. maybe some randomization by country would be good..

by ponchi101 Why? They are in the same section precisely because the draw is at random, after seeds 1 and 2 are placed.
Things like this will happen. :)

by skatingfan Heck of a tie-break between Raonic, and Tiafoe. Tiafoe hit a winner on set point, but also touched the net. The net is a doubles net, and since Tiafoe touched the net past the singles stick it doesn't matter, and he still wins the point. Raonic then smashed his racquet on the back of the bench that they have for the players to sit on.

by ashkor87

by ashkor87 What @skatingfan was referring to...amazing.. new learning for me..btw his explanation is exactly accurate.

by ponchi101 And it has happened enough times for players to know by now.
Ages ago, the same thing happened with Seles, when she actually put her foot under the net. But it was on the outside of the singles' posts.

by skatingfan Short delay in Korda taking the first set against Etcheverry when a support beam on part of the grandstand fell down.

Fergus Murphy got to handle this one, too, on the back of the singles-post issue from yesterday.

He was so diplomatic with Tiafoe and Raonic yesterday. They barely let him speak. Took a lot of patience.

Fergus Murphy got to handle this one, too, on the back of the singles-post issue from yesterday.

He was so diplomatic with Tiafoe and Raonic yesterday. They barely let him speak. Took a lot of patience.
Like always, get mad at the umpire even though he was 100% right and even very calmly explained the ruling, and even called for a clarification. You can't win being an umpire :)

On the money. It was not a judgement call; for example, the ball landed in or out. It was a rules call, and he still got roasted.

And Giron still can't serve it out--two doubles, two shanked returns.

by JTContinental I was sad to read that Milos' shoulder issues might be permanent enough to keep him from having a sustainable career on tour.

Age-old story...

by ponchi101 And it finally happened.
Foki noticed that Ruud was so far back that an underhand serve that would land short would do it. And it did. It went for an ace because Ruud never touched the ball.

Ruud them told Layani that he was not ready; the replay shows that he clearly was.
So, to those standing 25 feet behind the baseline: this can happen.

It's raining at my place right now, and probably just a couple hours before it moves to Montreal.

by ashkor87 That was a close one though for Alcaraz...all these tight matches make a young player that much tougher

He made that more difficult than it needed to be - he had two match points serving up 5-2 in the 3rd set.

Oh? Didn't know that...not a good sign...it was said of the great Gonzales that he was never broken when he served for a set...that is mental toughness...

by ponchi101 It was a "winning ugly" match. He fluctuated from his usual brilliance to some truly puzzling shots, missing lines by a couple of feet.
Kurkacz is the one that has to look at this match. He had plenty of chances, and seemed very much in control. The guys at ESPN L. America made a good call: when Alcaraz broke to get even in the second set, one of them said "this match may have just turned". And it did.

by jazzyg Interesting choice by Tennis Channel showing the McDonald-Davidovich Fokina match instead of Sabalenka-Samsonova.

I know McDonald is an American, but this goes against the grain of what they've been doing in the past couple of years.

TC will always default to the ATP match.

by ponchi101 They will only show WTA down here after all action has stopped in the ATP AND there are no more replays to show.

by ashkor87 DeMinaur showing us what he can do on a faster surface..his speed is a big asset here..of course, Sinner and Alcaraz have it too..am abit puzzled by Med though..not holding up well ..

This is where I disagree with you. How is this court "fast"? The rallies are interminable, and every single match I have seen there has not been one single set in which either player has hit more winners than UE's. The court seems super slow; there is no way to hit a winner.
Deminaur is simply a rocket, and in a slow court, it is impossible to pass him. Medvedev grew more and more frustrated by hitting 5 "winners" in every point, and the ball kept coming back at him.

by ashkor87 Looks fast to me,though I cant see more than a few clips

by ashkor87 theory.. on a slow court, anyone can reach anything, so foot speed is not a differentiator.. on a fast court, it helps. On a slow court, you need to win points somehow and the court doesnt help you, so you have to generate your own power..

by ponchi101 Yes, that sounds about right. But of course, there are limits. Even if the court is super slow, some players are faster than others; they will really get to more balls than the average. And Deminaur is one such player. He simply gets to everything because of his combination of speed and the court being slow.
It is like Nadal at RG; the court was always on his favor because it was slow and he was faster than average. Plus his FH could penetrate more. Ergo, 14 wins.

by ashkor87 Nadal has the power to hit through even the slowest surface.. that is why he won so many FOs...

by JTContinental De Minaur and Sinner have their caps pulled so low that I can't see their personalities. This final is bad for tennis.

Also, they are still warming up and Sinner has already hit de Minaur in the face with a groundstroke.

by Suliso The very first MS title for Sinner. Certainly not a surprise he won one of those this year. Also surely not the last of his career.

Rises to career high #6 in the rankings and #4 in the race.

by ponchi101 And he handled his competition by very reasonable scores. He never looked threatened today.
I say that indeed, he will add to this MS1000 title.
