i hate that.. cant tell them apart on TV.. should be banned

by meganfernandez Raducanu served for the match at 5-2 in the third and is now at 5-5. Ruse is being more aggressive than Raducanu but not red-lining or anything. Emma looks good but needs matches.

Aaaand she closed it out on her fourth match point with some good serves. Warm moment between her and Ruse at the net. Ruse is Romanian, and Emma called her a friend in her speech.

I've often wondered about that. No one likes to walk into a room to see someone wearing the same outfit. It's not like these athletic companies don't have an army of designers. People want variety, so I'd want everyone we sponsor at a tournament in different kits for wider appeal. I'm also not a good sales/marketing person.

Seems like they could have a few more options for the top players, at least, so they all get their own look. I think that would be a good marketing approach, actually. Because then it's not "the Adidas skirt" but "Caro's skirt," and if you love her, you want her skirt. The players would love to have their own looks. You're right, why can't they design a few more? It would be hard for stores to stock that many SKUs but they could be available online. Then they would also know who sells the most merchandise.

The scorekeepers really hate it when players look identical, if they're still doing that manually.

I had to look at their ankles from a distance. :) Svitolina wore braces and Caro wore bright blue shoes.

by JTContinental Hopefully Xinyu and Xiyu Wang will be wearing different outfits when they play each other in the R16 or that will be a scorers nightmare

by ti-amie I watched Svitolina vs Woz and Raducanu vs Ruse last night.

Svitolina vs Woz was a grueling match both mentally and physically. Woz was doing her usual and waging a war of attrition but Elina got right down in the mud with her and was the one to get the mistakes from Woz.

As for Raducanu I watched through the second set and the start of the third when it became obvious Ruse was not going to be able to hold her nerve and take the match from Raducanu who did nothing special. There were a few nice shots from her but if she had been playing anyone else I don't think she would've won the match. Ruse had no business losing the first set but you could see the panic set in and she did. She held it together better in the second to win it but she was losing the plot mentally early in the third and I'm surprised she managed to get to 5 all before losing.

It's going to be interesting to see Raducanu play the new more aggressive Svitolina next.

And umpire’s. I wondered if they would ever play each other.

Something in Svitolina's game bothers Wozniacki. Hence 4:1 turning 5:1 h2h.

Actually- Emma was up 5-2 in the third against Ruse- double break. So, clearly, both were pretty wobbly. :gorgeous:

Good point. I didn't watch that long. I figured Ruse would panic and lose. #shrug

ETA: The thing that bugged me with Ruse is that she wasn't deer in headlights the entire match. Every time she worked herself into a winning position like nelslus points out above coming back from 2-5 you could literally see her tense up and as the comm said "lose herself". Raducanu still has poor lateral movement and when Ruse was winning she was hitting shots that would exploit that. And then she would just stop thinking.

by ti-amie The battle of the Wang's was a bit difficult to follow unless you went by kit/skirt color and followed the indicator as to who was serving.

Going forward the WTA or whoever does the graphics for the broadcasters needs to think a bit outside of the box. Xinyu Wang and Xiyu Wang could be shown as "Wang Xin" and "Wang Xi" for example. I know, asking them to show the surname first is asking a lot but still, even using the Western naming convention it would be better than what we got last evening.

by ti-amie Brenda Fruhvirtova went up 2-0 on Cori in the first set. She lost it 6-3. Cori is now up 4-0 in the second set.

by ti-amie Gauff closes it out 6-3, 6-0 in 1h09m over Brenda Fruhvirtova.

I wish the WTA site still had pronunciation audio clips for names. I dont' see them anymore.

by ashkor87 Raducanu doing quite well against Svitolina..split two tiebreak sets..Raducanu is a grand slam champion, Svitolina is not!

I read that Raducanu had no legs left in the third set. I wonder if it was lack of conditioning or lack of match play? Both?

I'd say both, yeah, but quite possibly legs since she had the foot surgery last year.

by ashkor87 watched a bit of Navarro-Gauff on youtube.. Navarro looks a bit like Perlovic to m, just physically, I mean..
she tried to go toe to toe against Gauff's backhand, which was never going to work.. but Gauff's forehand still has the tendency to go short- I noticed she is trying to correct it by taking a big swing - hope that works for her. Coco served very well..

[1] Marie Bouzkova CZE/Bethanie Mattek-Sands USA vs [2] Anna Danilina KAZ/Viktoria Hruncakova SVK

by JTContinental Svitolina took 2 injury timeouts in her match, so I'll be curious to see if she is ready to go tomorrow or not. Coco has ripped through her half of the draw, and her serve has been lethal.

by JTContinental Svitolina’s grunt, which she only uses if she’s behind in the point, is quite long and obnoxious and borderline hindrance IMO. You should not still bellowing once that ball goes over the net

by JTContinental Svitolina appeared to aggravate an ankle injury when she miffed a volley and has called the trainer a couple of points later

by JTContinental High level tennis from both players

by ashkor87 Coco shouldave won in straights though, missed an easy pass by a whisker at set point first set..
court looked fast.. as expected, Coco's defense was up to the teask.. Svitolina was trying to hit harder and harder to get through it, didnt work..
