by ashkor87 since fresh legs are a great, maybe even decisive factor here, let us look for good performances from
Zverev, Rublev, Halep, Anisimova, Qinwen Zheng and, of course, Pegula.. they must have gotten some good rest by now. I am assuming Djokovic is not playing..Rybakina if she is recovered, who knows..Osaka is getting better by the day, too, so maybe she will do well... losing to Mertens was a shocker (to me at any rate)

by ti-amie Vondrousova Withdraws From Miami Open Due To Personal Reasons

by Nurein Ahmed
Today, 14:3253

Marketa Vondrousova withdrew from Indian Wells before her third-round match and has now followed suit by pulling out from the Miami Open.

The fourth WTA 1000 tournament of 2024 is scheduled to commence on March 19th at Miami Gardens in Florida. A 96-player field will compete to win the tournament, which was won by another Czech last year—Petra Kvitova.

The decorated defending champion will not compete at this year's tournament after announcing her pregnancy earlier this year. Vondrousova will join her compatriot on the absentees' list, citing personal reasons.

by skatingfan Novak Djokovic confirms that he won't play the Miami Open
The Serbian star is 8-3 this season, though is without a title to his name.

After his shocking third-round exit to 123rd-ranked lucky loser Luca Nardi in Indian Wells, Novak Djokovic is moving on to preparing for the European clay-court season.

On Thursday, per reports from Christopher Clarey and Sasa Ozmo, the world No. 1 would not play the Miami Open. Later that day on Tennis Channel Live, Steve Weissman said the 36-year-old is "gonna rest up, get ready for the red-clay season."

Official confirmation didn't come from Djokovic untl Saturday, with the Serbian saying that "at this stage of my career, I’m balancing my private and professional schedule. I’m sorry that I won’t experience some of the best and most passionate fans in the world."

Before returning to the BNP Paribas Open for his opening match this past Saturday, Djokovic hadn’t appeared at either leg of the Sunshine Double since 2019. The Serbian memorably claimed his first of a record-breaking 40 Masters 1000 titles at Miami in 2007. He has won 11 total titles between Indian Wells and Miami, but has now failed to win either of the two prestigious hard-court events since 2016.

Djokovic is 8-3 this season and without a title to his name. After falling to Nardi Monday, Djokovic told press, “Obviously 10 minutes ago I was on the court, so I'm still hot-headed a bit. I need to take a day or two and then see what I want to do next.”

Fellow 20-plus-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, who withdrew from Indian Wells as an injury precaution, has yet to confirm his participation at the Miami Open.

In skipping Miami, it opens the door for Jannik Sinner to continue making his case to challenge the 36-year-old for the world No. 1 ranking this spring. Djokovic has a Roland Garros crown to defend, while Sinner’s best clay-court showing was a Monte Carlo semifinal. The Italian has surpassed his 2023 Indian Wells result with a run to the semifinals (if not farther), though does have a runner-up effort to back up in Miami as well.

Sabalenka should be fresh too..would bet on her to win...

by Suliso That's possible of course, but I think there is also a very high chance of Sunshine double by either Swiatek or Alcaraz. Iga has done it before.

by ti-amie James Blake is the reason Simona Halep received a wild card for Miami
“That one’s on me,” the Miami tournament director explained on the latest ‘Served with Andy Roddick’ podcast.

Just as the verdict of Simona Halep’s appeal of her doping ban was revealed, so too was the announcement of her return to tennis. This week at the Miami Open, the two-time Grand Slam champion will return to action for the first time since the 2022 US Open.

You can thank James Blake for that.

“That one’s on me,” the Miami tournament director said on Served with Andy Roddick. “When it comes to some of the tennis decisions they're going to trust me.”

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) officially reduced Halep’s doping ban from four years to nine months, ruling that she didn’t consciously take a banned substance. This allowed her to immediately return to tennis as she had served the nine months within this appeal period, so she capitalized on the “immediate” part and accepted a wild card into the Miami Open.

“I had a feeling we needed to be ready for whether she's going to ask [for a wild card],” Blake said. “We had already gone through a lot of our wild card discussions, and we did, luckily, save one woman's wild card because you never know what's going to happen.”

The only concern for Blake was whether she was ready to compete.

“You don't want to put someone out there who hasn't been practicing,” he said. “It's going to be detrimental to them. We don't want them going out and getting killed.”

Blake sought out Darren Cahill, Halep’s former coach, who confirmed that the Romanian has been preparing for months and was ready for a speedy return.

“We all came to the same conclusion to welcome her back,” Blake said.

All eyes will be on the former world No. 1 as she “rejoins the tour with renewed vigor and an invigorated spirit,” as she said in an Instagram post.

yes, if anyone can, Iga can.. she is strong enough.. less sure of Alcaraz..he seems a bit more fragile to me.

by ashkor87 MIami is just a bit faster than IW so the court speed factor would again predict -
Men: Alcaraz or Zverev will win
Medvedev and Sinner will not, though Sinner's chances are sightly better this time because the court is a bit faster.
Rublev will do well.. so will Shelton.
Women: Sabalenka, Swiatek, Rybakina would be the favorites to win, in that order, the freshness factor gives Saba the edge
Pegula will do well, though that is purely the freshness factor, not court speed.
Osaka will do well, so will Samsonova
Alexandrova will not.
Anisimova, if she is fit, will do well..

Kostyuk may not be fresh enough this time around..
there will be many bagels again, but a bit fewer than at IW

the court speed theory did quite well at IW in my opinion.

Disagree.
You said Sinner and Medvedev would not win, and they indeed did not. But you said it in the sense that they would not do well because of the court speed. They actually did pretty well; SF and F are not bad showing, especially when losing to the eventual champ.
You picked the #1, #2 and #4 seeds in the women. Hardly going out on a limb. Sabalenka went out early, and predicting that Iga will win a tournament (out of grass) is no incredible feat.
Your predicted Kostyuk and Coco would not do well. They did, reaching later stages.

Overall. I say predicting based on court speed is a 50% thing.

And predicting that Miami will be won by Alcaraz is a safe bet. Zverev, I grant you, is riskier.
And you are again going for Iga, Aryna and Elena. Hard to do poorly, there.

by ashkor87 The point is Sinner would have won on a faster surface, and so might Coco. It is not my prediction I am concerned with, it is how the prediction depends on the speed factor. I predicted Kostyuk Would do well.

by Owendonovan What percent does court speed determine the outcome versus ability in your prediction exercise? Which increments of speed are you basing your descriptions of court speed? ie; is slow 5 or 10 mph faster than really slow, medium 5-10 mph faster than slow?)

Sabalenka should be nervous. .Halep is a champion, in the same class as herself, and will be highly motivated...! Is she match-fit,? Certainly not. Let us see how well she does...very good chance of beating Badosa, though, who is not herself always fit to play...very interesting...

I'm waiting for the draw to be revised. Knowing the WTA it might not be until tomorrow. The next in, Schmiedlova, is playing tomorrow I guess in place of Raducanu so I guess it'll be a LL? I can never figure that out.

by ashkor87 The great uncertainties are-
How will Halep do?
Is Osaka getting back to her best?
Is Rybakina fully recovered?

Is Alcaraz strong enough physically to fight through one more hot, humid tournament?

by ti-amie It was actually pretty cool temp wise at IW. From how the fans dressed it got downright cold at night and many players wore long sleeves while playing.

Miami is another matter.

by ashkor87 In case you are wondering, Sabalenka's close friend (bf?) Passed away suddenly, very young...
Unconfirmed thus far. One hopes not true..

by JTContinental It was confirmed on ESPN.

by ashkor87 very difficult to tell what will happen at Miami - the players are mostly tired and /or injured/sick/grieving..just hope they all come out ok from this...
I always thought MIami was a more straightforward tournament than IW, with conditions a bit less extreme but the factor of physical fatigue makes it much less so now.. Even last year, Sinner and Medvedev were struggling in the finals, and Rybakina looked like she wanted to lose and go home. Not worth prognosticating here..

by JTContinental Another reason I don't think Halep will be a factor anytime soon is that I don't think she's going to receive the warmest reception on tour.

Exhibit A: This quote from Caroline Wozniacki from today, generally regarded as one of the friendliest players on tour:
But Halep's return on a wildcard did not sit well with Wozniacki.

"I've been very outspoken in the past how I feel about doping and all of that," said Wozniacki, adding that she likes Halep. "I have always wanted a clean sport, fair for everybody. I think it's definitely still my opinion.
"This is not directly at Simona, but if someone purposely cheats, if someone has tested positive for doping it's my personal belief that I don't think people should be awarded wildcards afterwards.

"If you want to come back, and it's been a mistake, I understand, you should work your way up from the bottom."

by JTContinental I won't link to any of the details, but the story regarding Koltsov's death has gotten very dark and completely different from what I was reading last night.

by ashkor87 Sloane vs Kerber..similar players, both great players. 55% Kerber...she is in better form..
Vekic vs Pliskova- The court is too slow for Vekic, so 60% Pliskova...though it is really foolish to bet on or against Pliskova!

by ashkor87 I doubt Halep cares how the locker room treats her..she has always been a loner, trusts only Rumanians....wonder how she gets along with semi- Romanians Andreescu and Raducanu..
Where is Andreescu, btw?

yes, saw a bit of the highlights.. Sloane played really well, and Kerber missed a couple of her favorite forehands down the line..

Yes, they had broken up. Apparently, she was with another guy in Indian Wells (maybe before then, unreported) and traveled to Miami with him (apropos of nothing, on Grigor's jet - rented, I assume). Surely Konstantin was in Miami for Sabalenka - to talk to her or something like that.

It was a well disguised drop shot duh.

by ashkor87 Siniakova injured, it seems...

by ashkor87 Saw a bit of Rybakina on YouTube..she seems ok, which is good news. osaka also hitting her stride now. Haven't seen how Swiatek is playing, we will see Saba only tomorrow. I would expect Pegula and Keys, being locals used to these conditions, to do well too ..

by ashkor87 Svitolina is a good test for Osaka ..Svitolina is a good player but not in Osaka's class. If class prevails, Osaka should win ...it is certainly a good test of how far Osaka has come back...

by ti-amie So far only doubles have been officially cancelled in Miami.

Hearing that tomorrow’s OOP will be pretty much today’s OOP if Friday gets all cancelled.

Alcaraz and Zverev already told they will most probably start on Sunday.

by ti-amie Play has started but the forecast isn't good for a full schedule such as it is.

by ti-amie Ed Salmon

The rain held off a little longer than I expected, but here it is. Play is suspended, and that should be it for tonight. #tennis #interrupted

Paolini leads Volynets, 7-6 *4-5;
Murray and Etcheverry are at 3-3;
Cirstea leads Stephens, 5-2*;
Garcia leads Tomova, 3-0*;
Kasatkina leads Liu, 2-0 40-40*;
Vavassori and Sinner are at *2-3;
Shapovalov leads Tsitsipas, *2-1.

by ashkor87 Alexandrova is playing really well, returning serve very well, can she beat Pavly next? Pavs should do well given the slow surface but Alexandrova is really on fire now. intriguing matchup for sure.

by ashkor87 Something is really off with Rublev these days...beaten by Machac...he is too predictable, maybe..

by ashkor87 I keep hearing that the sunshine double is sooo hard to do, proof offered is that only a couple of people, like Vika have done it. But the real reason is the Williams sisters boycotted IW for many years because of racial jibes aimed at them and their father..if you don't play, you can't win. And in this case I don't blame the W sisters..can you imagine a 17 year old girl having to deal with such things?
If Serena and Venus had played both tournaments, can you imagine they wouldn't have done the famous double a dozen times?

by ashkor87 AI says Swiatek has a 93% chance against Giorgi..that is a bit high..Giorgi is fearless and hard-hitting, just the kind of player who can trouble Iga...would make it more like 65-35...

by ti-amie Play is taking place in Miami.
Leylah-Annie won her match in straight sets.

Fritz is down 3-6, 1-2 to Seyboth Wild.

Shapo is up 4-2 on Tsitsipas.

Murray and Etcheverry restarting at 3 all first set.

O'Connell up 7-5, 6-5 over Tiafoe.

Collins up 6-2, 5-2 over Potapova

Griekspoor 7-6(5), 6-5 over Michelsen

Kasatkina up 2-0 over Liu first set.

by ti-amie I'm sorry what?! I wonder how long before this gets deleted? Fritz lost 3&4
Stephanie Myles
@OpenCourt

Taylor Fritz wasn't exactly playing in front of a ... home in Miami just now, going down to Seyboth Wild of Brazil.

by ti-amie Steve Tignor @SteveTignor

Not a super Saturday for the top U.S. men: Taylor Fritz out to Seyboth Wild; Frances Tiafoe out to O'Connell; Tommy Paul out after rolling his ankle. #MiamiOpen

by ashkor87 Great wins for Vika and Osaka...over QZ and Svitolina resp.. Osaka is back! Swiatek continues to roll..

by ti-amie That was a huge win for Naomi. Svitolina's not an easy out but at her best even after the layoff Naomi is the better player.

Vika never let Qinwen into the match.

by ashkor87 Lovely to see Leylah win, and TT playing well against Rybakina (I assume she played well...anybody see it?)

by Fastbackss TT did play well. Toe to toe.
In deciding set there were many spots where looked like momentum was going to shift.
At 30-30 serving to stay in match Taylor hit a nice shot to corner, barely clipped the net which caused it to be out by millimetres

by ashkor87 Gauff continues to get an easy draw!! Her worst critic wouldn't give Dodin any chance .

by ti-amie

by ti-amie Pretty tame by our standards but we'll take what we can get.

I'd love for Taylor to get out of having to qualify.

Will Holger be Shapo Part 2? Hugely promising player that was less than palatable and then simply went away?

by Suliso Do we understand why Shapovalov and also FAA declined so much?

by ti-amie This is just my opinion of course but Shapo never improved his game after he got that big win in Canada. I saw him live at the US Open after he got that win and I remember how he had that big take back on his return of serve and hoped he'd fix it and other deficiencies I saw.

As for FAA I never understood how, with his game, he did so well his first few years on the tour.

I like both of them. :) Neither is unpalatable to me. I think Rune has a more solid game. More athletic, better foundation. Shapo was always erratic.

The unpire tells Chris to go through him, not talk directly to his opponent. I think that's kind of dumb, that you can't talk to an opponent. They're grown-ups.

by meganfernandez Jarry vs Wild was a hot-blooded match. Jarry won in 3 and lit into the umpire forever afterward about not controlling the crowd while he was serving and letting Wild go to the towel at one point but not Jarry. Referee Jerry Armstrong finally came out. Wild didn't shake the umpire's hand.

by meganfernandez Cold-blooded answer by Iga when she was down love-40 trying to serve it out at 5-4 in the third. Four quick winners and a service winner. That's a champ. She amped up her serve once she was in the hole. Fearless.

Iga is a GREAT player, not just good...

by ashkor87 Noskova has really acquitted herself well..in the third set, usually, Swiatek serves up a bagel..this score is really commendable!

by ashkor87 Meanwhile Alexandrova is quietly making a run...beating Pavlyuchenkova here is quite a feat..Swiatek next .let us see what she can do this time!

by ashkor87 Swiatek's spun second serve is certainly attackable, especially here on hard courts...Noskova showed how to do it! Some tall player like Rybakina can reach those bouncing balls nicely, though not on clay...Alexandrova has an exceptional return, so does Vika ..maybe they can fight her close, in addition to Ryba..only Alexandrova is in her path directly though..

by ashkor87 Is this Marozsan for real? I haven't seen him at all...

by ponchi101 Took out Alcaraz last year (I forget the tournament). Given some time, why not? He has enough power, and the era of three guys dominating everything is over.

Marozsan has a pedestrian record of 19-17 on a main tour. Despite this he has already 3 top ten wins to his credit. Even though his demeanor is nothing like Kyrgios's, he clearly also has that something making him get up for a big challenge. Potentially could be a big match player like Wawrinka. Bigger the occasion and stronger the opponent - better he plays. His game is also quite well-rounded. So far movement is a weakest part, but this can be improved a lot with just proper training. IMO he is not "like 20 other guys".

I wouldn't say poor at all. She has played well. She has beaten Garcia, Samsonova, and Svitolina. Played Pliskova extremely close when Pliskova was hot for a minute. She has a winning record. It's as expected. No deep runs (one quarter) but getting her match legs back and playing and competing very well.

I thought they still had close games.

Alexandrova is returning very well, standing close in on the first serve - every first serve return has been from in front of the service line. Iga's returning terribly. I'm not sure the court speed is a factor in this mtach. They aren't getting into too many rallies. Iga is rattled.

Alexandrova is also serving well. Averaging an ace per game.

NOBODY has trolled you, Ashkor. We have a different opinion about Alexandrova than you do. You are extremely high on her, and we say she is a very good player that is ranked accordingly.
And you are happy now because she beat Iga. Be so. That was a very good match and she played excellent tennis. But, when she loses to Putintseva 5&1 (IW) or Frech 6&3 (Dubai) nobody runs out to point out to you that, well, she just lost to a lower ranked opponent. By solid scores.
You know we take trolling very seriously here. If you feel you are being trolled simply because we disagree with your opinion about a player, I ask you to reconsider. We are talking about tennis; if somebody beliefs that your fave it not great, that is their right. As long as it is done respectfully.

by ashkor87 Pegula was very impressive. She has great footwork, never gets wrong-footed, or off-balance...these are all very useful traits. Alexandrova will be tough, but I would say 50-50 as of now ...very happy to see Collins doing well in her last season....

by meganfernandez Hubie threw a racket! Wow, never thought I'd see him boil over. His foot hit the bottom of the net while sliding for a ball in the third-set tiebreak. He looked down when it touched, so I'm surprised he was mad at the chair for calling it. We couldn't see if the ball was already dead, but probably not. He didn't seem to be arguing whether he touched before or after the point was dead. And he has to know he touched the net.

I've always thought it was a silly rule, something that (in most cases) has no effect on the playability of the ball and confers no advantage on the player.

Same as when a live ball touches a player standing out of bounds before it hits the ground. I hate that the player loses the point. I've seen it happen where the player was running to cover the open court, the opponent shanked the ball so it went right to them, and the player couldn't contort their body fast enough to get out of the way. But they were standing several feet out, so the ball was several feet out while still in the air. In no way is it just that the player lost the point. It's so obvious. Patently unfair. And the rules can get that right.

Neither rule is dumb. They have logical reasons behind them.
Imagine that you are playing doubles and you can touch the net. Well, nothing stops YOUR partner from stepping on the net and making it a little bit lower for your stroke.
Or.
You run into the net, and bring it down (accidentally). But, if you are allowed to touch the net, that would be a hindrance, and a point replay, when in reality, your opponent was not at fault.
Or.
You are very close to the net and ready for a volley. If you can touch the net, how about a little bringing it down with your non-racquet hand?

About being hit by the ball outside the lines. Same thing. If you are standing several feet out, sure, that is clear. But what if you are standing ON the line? The ball hit your foot, and you were right there? What is the call? Was the ball landing in or out? Well, it hit you, so you really can't tell. So, better make a rule that ensures that the grey areas are not there.
The rules of tennis are designed to make sure that grey areas are not there to be interpreted by the chair. So, it is always fair for both players.

Most if not all of those situations you describe, or could imagine, can be handled with hindrance calls (like someone pulling down the net) and the umpire's subjectivity + video replay (the player was actually on the line when the ball hit her foot, so it's in). We accept subjectivity in sports calls. Can't eradicate it. I don't think there should be a broad rule to guard against extremely unlikely scenarios if the rule then produces patently unfair situations when there's a different remedy available. (Don't' get me started on let serves.)

We lived with the most subjective rule of all - did any part of the ball touch the line or not - for over 100 years. We can get a lot closer to fairness than we are right now. Right now these rules are far too broad and produce more unfairness than fairness.

Collins next..I would bet on Collins in this match-up, much as I love Alexandrova...I would love to see Collins win this tournament...would be a fitting capstone to a fine career...!

by ti-amie What a grueling match that was between Pegula and Alexandrova. It was another match where I think the loser won more points than the winner.

by ashkor87 Rybakina is queen of tiebreakers! I wonder if her record is really the best, or it is just my impression...

by Fastbackss Rybakina was dead to rites in the 2nd set.
Another example of the scoring system of tennis working well.

Mike Tyson is watching Carlos and Grigor. And Mike looks like he had an edible or three pre-match.

Lastly, Collins is a betting fav tonight. Admittedly a bit surprised.

No, she is actually 3-5 this year...

by Fastbackss Dimitrov had full control of this match. Serving at 4-2 and was broken at love. Let's see how much is left in the tank here.
Courier has been insightful on the call

by Fastbackss Carlos tied it at 4-4. Prior strong service game and then broke Carlos fairly easily to win the match.

Statement win

by ashkor87 I am not surprised Collins is favorite. .I would expect her to win too

by Fastbackss She is frustrating Alexandrova. And her anticipation is fantastic. "She's done her homework on alexandrova patterns" was an understatement

by ti-amie I just hate that the men played to a screaming full house and the women are playing in almost total silence. Unless you're a tennis nerd you haven't heard of either of these two women and I blame the WTA.

Good job by coach ? Who IS her coach?

by Suliso No Sunshine double for Alcaraz either. Despite all the talk claiming it's nothing so special IT IS still very hard and rare.

I can't remember his name but he looks like he just wandered out of Haight-Ashbury after being in a, uh, fog for a long time. Unless she's changed coaches because the two men they keep showing aren't him.

ETA: His name is Jared Jacobs and this is the pic I found of him.

They were also the 2nd match on tonight on a weeknight. The WTA semis were playing 2nd fiddle to the ATP quarterfinals.

by ashkor87 That is a bit misleading..Collins has been to the AO finals, beating Swiatek, no less, on the way..

Collins is also the last person to beat Barty, in an Aussie tuneup.

by ashkor87 Alcaraz versus Dimitrov.. Alcaraz' topspun shots sat up and begged Dimitrov to hit them. Topspin isnt really very effective on a hard court..

by mick1303 What caught my attention is how good Grigor's anticipation was. Alcaraz is very versatile, but still has some patterns. And Dimitrov studied them well. On many occasions he was guessing right.

Depends on what kind of hard. On a sandpaper-like in IW it was quite effective ))

yes, then it is quite like a clay court in the way it grips the ball? I dont know, will have to watch a bit more.

The price to be paid for this parity.
WTA Semis: #4, #14, #27 and unseeded. One slam winner.
ATP: #2, #3, #4 and # 11. Two slam winners, two ATP championship winners.

I love the parity in the WTA, but it works against it marketing its products.

I said this to my daughter last night. I think it's Abuserev's tournament to lose.

by ti-amie From last night:

by ti-amie

I would love to know what she was thinking.

by ti-amie

by ti-amie Sinner 6-1, 6-2 in 69m.

There was a 30+ shot rally between the two in the second set that Medvedev seemed to get bored with and ended. Despite his seeming to wake up towards the end of the second set it was too little too late.

by Suliso Wow, Sinner completely crushed Medvedev. I didn't expect it to be this easy.

For now he has repeated 2023 results (SF, F). Let's see if he can improve on that. If he can he rises to #2 for the first time.

by ponchi101 It is impressive how Sinner has turned around that match up. Shades of Roger Vs Nalbandian/Hewitt, and Pete Vs Chang.

by Suliso It will be Sinner vs Alcaraz for Slam titles, but there is a room for a third future multi Slam winner. I don't have a good candidate, though. Perhaps only in 2-3 years.

by ashkor87 Sinner is growing in stature every day...he really is the best now..

by ti-amie

The sound is garbled at the beginning for me so here's a transcript.

Serena Williams chatting with Jannik Sinner

Serena: “I wish I had my forehand like that.”

Jannik: “don’t say that” 😂

Serena: “No seriously, the racquet speed, the power… you’re unbelievable.”

The ultimate compliment.

by ti-amie

by Fastbackss Dimitrov hasn't fallen off in level from the other night.

Just broke Zverev midway through third. Up 5-3 now and firing forehand winners

by Fastbackss Dimitrov back in top 10 - all hail the one hander existing in the top ten.

Ps - fun stat they showed - Dimitrov hadn't won against Zverev since Alex was 17

by ti-amie Should I pick Sinner to win? That's a hell of a stat btw.

by ashkor87 Sinner's footwork, reach, flexiiblity - all remind me of Djokovic..

by ponchi101 That was a gorgeous match between Zverev and Dimitrov. Grigor almost doubled his winners Vs UE count.
I say he goes out as the unfavored player, but I do give him a chance. He is playing very solid tennis (the match against Alcaraz was also very good).

@Suliso. Yep. Carlitos and Sinner. Medvedev will be in the mix for hard court slams for a few more years. So will be Zverev. But I also can't see if there will be a third solid option for multiple slams on the near future.
Maybe Mr. Other (Miss Other's little brother) will start showing up?

by ashkor87 My candidates would be, in order- Shelton, Michelsen, Marozsan...Medvedev and Zverev have hit their peak ...they won't challenge Sinner and Alcaraz...

by skatingfan Marozan is already 24 - he might end up having a very successful career, but I don't think he'll challenge for majors.

by Suliso
ponchi101 wrote: Sat Mar 30, 2024 3:11 pm Maybe Mr. Other (Miss Other's little brother) will start showing up?
I think he will, but not all the time. :)

There are some promising 18 and 19 year olds, but I can't judge yet whether they have that kind of potential. Rune and Ruud do not seem to be good enough.

by atlpam I still give Ruud a chance on clay - he has been to the FO final the past 2 years losing to Djokovic (2023) and Nadal (2022).

Let us hope so!

by Suliso I don't think she should. Better to go out on top than slowly fade into irrevelance.

by Owendonovan Make as much bank and then move on. I hope she makes the most she's made in a year and can, financially unburdened, pursue whatever else she's interested in.

by ti-amie

by Suliso So far Dimitrov has no real chance. I don't think Zverev would have fared any better.

Suliso wrote: Sun Mar 31, 2024 12:20 am I don't think she should. Better to go out on top than slowly fade into irrevelance.
I can think of only one other player than went out winning a big tournament, and that his last stroke was a winner.
Pete at the USO 2002.
Love you Danielle, but go out with a bang. The memory will be so satisfying.

by ponchi101 3&1.
I like Sinner. But that was completely unexpected. He has really made strides.
(And I stand corrected. I thought he would not reach this level).

Pennetta was close. She did finish the season after winning USO, though.

Honestly I didn't really expect either few years ago, but I was singling him out earlier because of his career progression in juniors and early on the tour. Most great champions follow a very similar timeline.

by Suliso As for Collins she now has a realistic chance to qualify for Olympics. She'd probably want that.
