Halep, Wozniacki, Nishikori and Landaluce, the first Mutua Madrid Open Wildcards
03/04/2024

The Mutua Madrid Open announced on Thursday the names of the first four invitees to the WTA and ATP main draws: Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki, Kei Nishikori and Martín Landaluce.

The WTA 1000 category tournament, having issued these two wildcards, will now have in its draw two players who know what it is to be the world No. 1, as well as having at least reached the final in the Caja Mágica.

No women has reached the decider on the Madrid clay more times than Halep. She did so for the first time in 2014, but lost the final to Maria Sharapova. However, in 2016 and 2017 she claimed her two crowns in the Manolo Santana Stadium. In 2019 she was back in the title bout, but lost out to Kiki Bertens. Halep is, along with Serena Williams, the only player to have successfully defended a WTA title in Madrid.

For her part, Wozniacki was a finalist in the first season the Caja Mágica hosted the event, 15 years ago. It was in the 2009 final that the Dane faced then world number one Dinara Safina, who eventually took the spoils. Fans will be able to watch her play again for the first time since 2019.

In the men’s draw, the return of Nishikori is big news. He came agonisingly close to the title in 2014, when only Rafa Nadal – and an injury – prevented him from completing a dream week. The Japanese player, who also reached the semifinals in 2015 and 2016, will be participating in the Mutua Madrid Open for the tenth time.

Finally, another of the wildcards will go to one of the most promising talents in Spanish tennis. Landaluce, at 18 years of age, already has experience on the clay of the Manolo Santana Stadium, having clashed with Richard Gasquet there last season. This time, he arrives in Madrid having celebrated his first win in an ATP Masters 1000 match last week in Miami.

This is a really strange tournament...replete with one-off results ..results are like it is a grasscourt Event ..champions are folks like Kvitova, Sabalenka, Jabeur..Swatek has never won it..on the men's side, it is more orderly..but then it always is!
The altitude apparently makes the ball fly through the air and negates the slowness of the court a bit..
This is one I am not even going to dare to prognosticate about.

Everybody likes to talk about altitude in Madrid. How about the courts? You can make a very different court on clay, make it even very fast: just take off a few layers of the top clay.
Maybe they have thin courts there, with not too many layers of clay on top.

I say Sabalenka will do well, Zverev too. Carlitos, if he plays, has done very well before. And Elena is doing well this week so she may be in form.

Remember the fuss when Tiriac had the clay blue instead of red? He swore the court was the same it always was, except for the color ..but yes, I agree, it is very easy to change the speed of any court . ..

Simona Halep Withdraws From 2024 Madrid Open
by Zachary Wimer
Today, 20:30

Simona Halep won't be playing at the 2024 Madrid Open despite initial plans to compete at the WTA 1000 tournament in the Spanish capital.

The Romanian's comeback to tennis hasn't really gone as fans might have expected so far. She swiftly returned just days after being allowed back to compete at the Miami Open.

She faced Paula Badosa in the first round of the tournament and lost in three sets after winning the first set 6-1. After that exit, Halep planned to play several smaller events to get back into playing shape.

The match against Badosa showed her that she was close but ultimately not good enough to compete against the best players yet. That's why she wanted to play some smaller events and, towards that end, accepted a wild card entry into the Oeiras Open.

She withdrew from that event a bit later, with plans to play at the Madrid Open. Unfortunately, she won't be playing at the Madrid Open either because she withdrew from that event as well.

The reason for her withdrawal is health issues that were present when she came back to Miami as well. Halep dealt with some minor issues at the event, and it seems like the issues are persistent enough for her to miss more time.

Ultimately, she doesn't want to risk an injury because that will keep her away from tennis even more, and that's the last thing she wants after having to spend over a year on the sidelines.

The former world no. 1 will now probably take more time to fully heal up and be ready for the only clay-court major - the Roland Garros. That's only a few weeks away, but injury issues don't go away overnight. She needs the added time to get fit, because it's been just a very long period that she spent away from the sport.

1 will now probably] take more time to fully heal up and be ready for the only clay-court major - the Roland Garros. That's only a few weeks away, but injury issues don't go away overnight. She needs the added time to get fit, because it's been just a very long period that she spent away from the sport.

Madrid is strange but this could well be Rybakina's year. Began the year spectacularly, then had health issues, which seem to be over .just viral infections ...but she is looking more confident and resilient, and her game is as powerful as ever..she has certainly cut down the errors..

Djokovic has withdrawn

Ok, I see it is listed above. But a bit of a shocker...
