by ashkor87 I doubt Medvedev will play. .but he is defending champ, so he might. Still, field has been decimated by injuries ...wonder how Djokovic will do ..

by Suliso Djokovic hasn't been amazing this year either...

And who knows, he may not play either..wonder what his plan is...other than parting with coaching staff...he just let go his trainer..

by ponchi101 With the depleted field, Novak does not have to be amazing this year.
It will come down to that injury he is denying.

Not amazing, but still needs to be at least B+. Rublev, Tsitsipas, Zverev and few others are capable clay players.

by ashkor87 I would bet on Zverev or Tsitsi to win this...can't see Djokovic exerting himself enough to win it...

by ashkor87 And Swiatek...last year she was injured, else she would have won...it is a conventional, classic clay court, nobody is better on it than Iga. I thought Rybakina would win Madrid because conditions there favor the big servers, but she couldn't pull it off. I don't give Coco much of a shot either, her strengths are mainly foot speed and defense..doesn't matter much on slow clay.
Folks like Kostyuk, on the other hand, will do well..

True, but It is no shame to lose to Osaka- she is one of the truly great players around these days ..

Samsonova's defeat surprised me more...and she is part Italian too!

??

Foot speed and defense are the foundational blocks of clay court tennis.

by ashkor87 That is a good point to analyze and debate...foot speed and defence used to be the differentiators on clay but, in my opinion, those days are over. Nowadays, all players are quick enough to reach any ball on a slow surface, and you can't win a point any more merely by returning it .your opponent will smack a winner sooner or later. On slow courts like clay, you still need to WIN the point. - there are only two ways to do that..either with so much power that you can blast winners even on clay, or from the net. That is my theory, anyway.

by ashkor87 Swiatek's game is quite unique, it is more like Nadal's..uses heavy topspin to keep her opponent on the back foot, then hits an incredible angle winner...but she still hits winners..

2. Pavlyuchenkova and Keys are powerful and slow..should do well at the Italian...

True, but that was then. The game has changed a bit in the last 10 years or so ..Nadal is different, his power and spin set up the winner

Paolini is beaten in her first match.Keys beat COS..who is the ultimate defensive player..may not get past BHM who is probably simply a better player these days..great serve, volley, drop shots..

ashkor87 wrote: Sat May 11, 2024 1:59 am Ruud is a puzzle..something wrong with him? Lost badly yesterday...
From the highlights it seemed that he wasn't moving well to his right. Maybe some injury is involved.

by ponchi101 Agree that he is a puzzle. He is obviously damn good on clay; you don't make two RG finals in a row unless you are pretty good on the stuff. And then, he has these odd losses.
Maybe a Robin Soderling, more than a Wilander. Let's see how he fares this year.

by ashkor87 Osaka is playing great..beat Kostyuk then Kasatkina, very different players...she has never played this well on clay, has she?
Kerber too..apart from Stuttgart

by ashkor87 Ruud I think of as a mini Ferrer...never likely to win a major but can beat anyone except the big boys. But he is not even playing at that level nowadays ..as I had pointed out earlier, he had never won even a 500 level event until this year..
He is a bit over-rate, maybe..but also, as noted above, he maybe injured...in which case we should not criticise him

by ponchi101 Mini-Ferrer. I think that is accurate. Except that Ferrer had two things he never got credit for: he volleyed much better than most people, and the running FH got him back into a lot of points.
I can't think what is/are Ruud's exceptional shots.

by ti-amie

by ti-amie

by skatingfan I think Ruud's backhand weakness is hurting his results - we're seeing similar things across the board right now in men's tennis where players with a weak side are struggling because the top guys can hurt you off both sides, and there is no safe place to play to when your opponent hits to your weaker side.

Come on. That should be an immediate default.

by ponchi101 Agree. The ball kid was right there. That was reckless.

by ashkor87 I know Mertens is not a clay courter but still...stunning defeat at the hands of Begu..
Meanwhile, Sakkari looking stronger and stronger every round...
Sad to see Korda playing Fritz next..these poor Americans need a break...!

by ashkor87 very strange score between Gauff and Cristian - what happened, actually? I cant see it so.. if anyone did, please update me/us..
of course, on clay, a tiny advantage can give you a bagel but what did Gauff do different in the first and third sets? Or Cristian in the second?

by ashkor87 Evidently he thinks so .says he had no balance, no coordination...I keep remembering Bouchard's concussion at the USO...

by ponchi101 Nah, c'mon. If getting hit by a stray water bottle knocks out your balance and coordination, he has got to be the most fragile athlete in the world.
Hey, he is struggling. And we may be seeing the end. Remember that in 1988, Wilander won 3 slams, and never again won anything else. When your reign stops, it stops like that.
Of course, watch him now win RG and W. He is still that good.

This was a metal bottle. If it was full of water and hit in some unfortunate place on the temple - could be negative consequences. I think nausea was mentioned in some podcast - it is a sign of concussion. However mild - it still could have some effect.

Keys very impressive thus far.. rolled over Cirstea today, more easily than I would have thought..

Ostapenko's attitude on court is rarely "positive". She does get down on herself a lot.
I guess you meant "positive" in the sense that she will attack and try to destroy the ball. Owen was talking about something else.
(I guess)

by ashkor87 I don't care if a player is negative about herself, I admire her if she is positive about trying to win the point ..I am not her psychiatrist, just her fan.

by ashkor87 Keys vs Swiatek. Swiatek won in Madrid...strangely enough, I feel Keys will do better against Iga on a slow court...30% Keys.
I still remember how I laughed when Davenport (her mentor) called her a future Wimbledon champion..she is possibly a future champion on a slower court...I always thought she would do better on clay than on grass, at RG than at W. Flushing Meadow has slowed down a bit lately, gives her a chance...

by ashkor87 Coco vs QZ next...I don't see how Coco can win, with double digit dfs ..you can get away with that against lesser lights like Badosa but not against Qinwen...

If Davenport, one of the worst movers ever tor each #1, could win W, Madison could too. She has the serve, the FH and the volleys. But she is one player with a huge standard deviation. She can play top 3 tennis one day, and top 100 the next.
That will always dim your chances over 7 matches.

Davenport winning W was 25 years ago, and it was a suprise to me even then - I think Graf (whom she beat in the finals) was about to retire ..

by ponchi101 That was the last match Graf played; she retired about two weeks later.
It was a surprise to everybody, and I always felt that Graf thought that if she could not beat Davenport on grass, the writing was on the wall.

by ashkor87 Coco - QZ match again involves a coach switching sides..Riba was Coco's coach...wonder how much it matters..probably not much ? It is not the coach who has to play..!

by jazzyg Davenport also lost in the Wimbledon final twice--once 9-7 in the third set to Venus--and twice in the semis. She was a fantastic grass court player.

If you were surprised she won there, you simply weren't paying attention.

Keys has struggled at Wimbledon, but she did reach the quarters twice and also has three grass titles. There's nothing strange about Davenport predicting Keys would win Wimbledon early in her career.

You don't really have to move all that well on grass if you play first strike tennis like Keys does and Davenport did.

by JTContinental Sabalenka is nursing a lower back injury suffered in her R16 match that she is playing through

by ashkor87 Tommy Paul ! Great win over Hurkacz..didn't expect it. He has a nice varied game....including volley...

by ashkor87 As a believer in history repeating itself, I certainly expect Swiatek and Sabalenka to win their semis..unless there are exceptional circumstances, such as a fast-improving young player..I don't think Coco is that, any more..

by Suliso Swiatek is a very problematic opponent for Gauff. H2H is now 10-1 and Coco has won only two sets. Almost reminds one of Federer vs Roddick.

I'll not be particularly surprised if Collins beats Sabalenka.

I was trying to recall one such "rivalry", and could not come up with this one. Indeed, Coco is a very good player but nothing she does seem to bother Iga.

Ostapenko is capable as well. But she is too inconsistent to get many chances to play Iga.

by ashkor87 given that Rome is slower than Madrid, true red clay etc., Iga will get enough time to get onto the front foot against Sabalenka.. quite likely to win more easily than she did at Madrid.. even a bagel or breadstick?

by mick1303 Rome is slower than Madrid, true. But still a bit faster than RG. Sampras managed to win Rome. And recently Medvedev and Rybakina. Sabalenka will not be breadsticked, I'm almost sure. In fact I think it will be very competitive again. Chances are 60-40 Swiatek.

by ashkor87 yes, a bit rash of me to talk about bagels and breadsticks, since scores are seldom that easy to predict.. you can have a really close bagel set and a not-so-close tiebreaker too. let me leave it at saying Swiatek will win more easily than she won Madrid..I think Sampras wining the Italian is certainly an outlier, and even Medvedev beat only Rune, not such a great player anyway, last year. Agassi has won this title more than once, I think, but he has won the French also. The really surprising one was Arias, beating Higueras..

by jazzyg Swiatek is always going to be the heavy favorite at Roland Garros. No one can beat here there. She can only beat herself, which is rare on clay.

She is never the favorite in my book at any slam other than Roland Garros. When time is taken away from her, her game tends to go down in a hurry.
