by mick1303 Recent Meddy win made me look into "wins over #1 player" stats. It was his 7th such win and he has wins over 3 different #1s. In the latter stat he joined rather long list of players who beaten 3 different #1 players (now 22 players).
There are only 7 players who are better in this particular stat:
Becker has wins over 6 different #1s
Chang and Agassi have wins over 5 different #1s
Djokovic, Federer, Sampras and one more player has wins over 4 different #1s

Who is that other player who I did not name?

by patrick Courier. However, I have a feeling that the answer is an outsider.

by atlpam Canas?

by mick1303 So far the answers are incorrect

by dave g Lendl (my guess)

by mick1303 Lendl is high on the list of total wins against #1s. With his 14 wins he is #4 behind Nadal, Becker and Djokovic. But he beat only 3 different #1s.

by mick1303 I have to stress that wins are counted only if the opponent was #1 at the time of the match. Wins over former or future #1s do not count.

by jazzyg Nalbandian?

by atlpam Mats Wilander

by ponchi101 Richard Krajicek?

by mick1303 Nope. None of the above

by Oploskoffie Del Potro?

by Owendonovan Vince Spadea

by atlpam Rios?

by atlpam Brad Gilbert, Mr. Winning Ugly?

Rusedski has wins over Sampras, Kuerten and Hewitt when they were #1s. Not the answer

But he also had a win of Safin when he was #1.

Roger Federer's first ATP title.

by mick1303 I was checking why my query did not pick that win over Safin. Turned out I was comparing dates of the matches (and they all correspond to the tournament start date in my DB) with dates when #1 reign started and ended. But I used strict comparisons (< an >), not accounting for the case when the tournament start coincides with the start of the #1 reign (the same day). When I put non-strict ">=" and "<=" this match is added to Rusedski's wins.

So yes, he shall be counted as well. But when I was asking the question, I had another player in mind. And his name is not yet revealed )

by mick1303 With that fix there is even one more player with 4 wins - Roscoe Tanner. But I was not asking about him as well )

Bingo!

by jazzyg So he did something memorable other than wearing a shirt with holes in the back.

by ponchi101 I think he also has a winning record against Roger.
The guy could play. The BH was a beauty.

I saw him play in that shirt once from the front row baseline. It was quite a look.
