The Committee, while adhering as closely as possible to the order of play given, is unable to guarantee that it will be maintained in its entirety.
This may result in matches being moved from one court to another. DENISE PARNELL - REFEREE
by jazzyg Not a well-played match but some drama at the end.
One double fault by Paolini and one big serve by Krejcikova made the difference.
I would have picked Paolini in 3 just like the non-watching ponchi.
by
nelslus LOL, the TAT excitement over this match result is overwhelming.
by JTContinental I must admit I never thought Krejcikova would even get close to a 2nd grand slam title

EXCEPT for her wins- Krejcikova's best results at Wimbledon and Roland Garros have been one 4R result for each tournament.
It feels like, we definitely have The Big 1 at Roland Garros, and we may now have The Big 1 at the Australian Open with Sabalenka. With Wimbledon and the US Open- clearly, and until further notice, it is Open Season.
by nelslus That men''s doubles final was absolutely insane. The Brit Patten and Finnish Heliövaara saved three match points in the second set tiebreaker to win 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (11-9). They actually almost came back in that first set tiebreaker. The match was somewhat dull during the first set until the tiebreaker- a lot of fairly easy service hold games. Throughout most of this match, Thompson and Purcell played better. BUT, obviously, during the biggest points, Patten and Heliövaara- who cried his eyes out after the match- prevailed.
Obviously, this was devastating for Purcell- who at least has one Wimbledon doubles title- and Thompson. Hated to see them lose three match points. But, it was incredibly exciting, and a very deserved win. Patten and Heliövaara just played inspired tennis to win.
by ponchi101 Watched in delay. The first set was masterful by Krejcikova, and then, rather mundane. Some good points.
As above. I thought she was a one slam wonder (in singles). Young enough to get a third somewhere.

People did not even vote in the poll.
Nothing the WTA can do, but this lack of excitement is troublesome. Add to the RG final, and these are going to be slim years.

I mean, there ARE enough very talented WTA players out there. Certainly, some of them will step up on a more consistent basis....right.....?
by jazzyg The final was mediocre, bur Paolini became the most popular player on the tour the past two weeks and will generate increased interest in women's tennis if she sustains this level.
This is based on the way the crowd treated her and her opponents in the last two matches. Watch her court assignments at the US Open as long as she stays in the tournament for proof.
My wife, who is not into tennis much, was glued to the TV for her semifinal and final. People love her underdog status because of her size and her positive attitude.
by ponchi101 I can only say I hope you are right.
But her tennis does not stir me one bit. I would much rather have Navarro becoming more of a star.
BTW. Krejcikova's post match on court interview was very, very nice. It got her some points with me.
by ti-amie I'm going to be interested in Paolini's court assignments at Roger's Cup before the US Open.
She's the most charismatic player right now.

Agree about the point on court assignments during the US Open swing about Paolini and to a smaller point, Krejcikova
by ti-amie An emotional Taylor Townsend is now a Grand Slam Champion in Doubles.
She and Katerina Siniakova defeated Dabrowski and Routliffe 7-6(5) and 7-6(1).
by ti-amie ESPN couldn't wait to cut away from tennis to basketball could they?
by patrick No excuse for ESPN2 to move on to the irrelevant summer league. Wanted to hear Townsend speak. Also, waiting on PMac to respond

Townsend played that set 2 tiebreak like a boss. Well deserved after being close with McNally and Fernandez

LOL, we were SO!!!! pissed off about this. Although, I knew this would happen.
Nevertheless......
Taylor and Kateřina!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I now have HUGE lifetime love for Kateřina- majorly helping Taylor to get her Wimbledon crown, and Coco with her French Open doubles crown- AND, Barbora- who dragged Rajeev to get two Aussie mixed doubles titles.

.....Albeit, I am quite content with PMac keeping in STFU mode about Taylor forever. ANY contrition and/or support he could show Taylor now would be hollow.
by patrick Agreed about the hollow part. Just want Townsend to put him in his place again like she did at USO
by
nelslus LOL, I was pretty much rooting for Barbora to win today- albeit, I DO still wonder if this could have been Paolini's last shot at winning a major.
It sure feels like Barbora can win a few more majors- although I kind of doubt it. I am very cool with both of them. I'd just like for the supposed Big 3- and Coco- to be able to truly step up more. Freaky Slam wins can be fun and all. But, it is weird how unsettling it can feel. And, ponchi is right- the public could lose interest in the women's tour if the winners aren't big enough stars.
AND, for all I know, Paolini's gonna own the tour now. If she does become a Mega-Star, good on her. GET her on Ashe and Armstrong.
OTHER than all of that- these two doubles finals were just spectacular. So much fun.

Multiple Slam doubles titles for Taylor, I sez.
by JTContinental Paolini has definitely not become the most popular player on tour.

I missed the poll because I always click on the link that takes you to first unread post, and it skips right by polls. I caught the men`s poll.

Paolini has definitely not become the most popular player on tour.
I'd say she's become one of the most popular. Who would you say is the most popular woman playing right now? Not based on stats just based on fan enthusiasm?
by JTContinental For starters, any of the top American or Eastern European players are going to have an automatic base bigger than anything Paolini will achieve. Paolini’s appeal is specific and limited, IMO
by JTContinental Outside of those players, I’d say Zheng, Raducanu, Osaka, Badosa, and Wozniacki are all more popular.
by ponchi101 Zheng must have, at the very least, hundreds of millions of followers.
Raducanu can move to pickleball or padel and all of the UK will still be following her.
I am not sure if Wozniacki is popular anymore. She has been out of the spotlight for a long time now.
by JTContinental That could be true about Wozniacki. That said, she still has 2.8 million Twitters followers and 1.3 million Instagram followers, compared to 26K and 300K for Paolini.
by ashkor87 i didnt even see the poll.. missed it somehow.

I am surprised. Of course, I know nothing about social media, but that Caro has 2.8 million followers is surprising.
Then again. Are they active? I wonder if people follow somebody and never stop doing so, and these are the remnants from her glory days.

But her tennis does not stir me one bit. I would much rather have Navarro becoming more of a star.
This is what makes tennis a great sport and fun to debate. I have seen Navarro several times this year and been completely nonplussed by her game even when she was winning impressively. I'm not crazy about Paolini's game, either, but it is more interesting to me than Navarro's. Differences of opinion are good.
by JTContinental None whatsoever, just feel a lot of what’s posted about her here is pretty hyperbolic
by jazzyg I'm happy for Townsend, too, because she is and always has been a refreshing presence.
But as to her singles career, does anyone here not consider her a massive underachiever?

No, not really, because she still doesn't move well enough to cover the entire court on her own, in singles...many players (eg Sania Mirza, Bhupathy, Indian examples) are like that..they do well in doubles though .
by ashkor87 And TT is really great only at serve and volley..unfortunately not enough to win singles matches these days now that courts have become slow...
by jazzyg And why do you think she does not move well?
by
ponchi101 jazzyg wrote: ↑Sun Jul 14, 2024 4:08 pm

Isn't that the third rail question?
She plays a lovely game. The few times I have seen her play, her serve and volley is absolutely gorgeous. The serve is a lovely stroke, the volleys are crisp.
But she has to get to the balls. And that is where she could improve, if... that third rail.
by jazzyg Yeah, I don't think the UTSA's decision was totally indefensible way back when because she had legitimate fitness issues. That said, unintentional (or) intentional) racism may have been a factor, so I agree it was not a good look considering the entire picture.

I agree that Navarro's game is pretty boring. Works, but it doesn't hold my interest. I root for her but I don't love watching her play necessarily. Some matches have been entertaining. I saw her BJK Cup comeback in April live and it was thrilling. The competitiveness and grit came through more in person.

What I see...
If you mean, why does she not move well, there could be a myriad reasons..I don't think weight is the reason..as I said, there are players, like the ones I mentioned, who do not move all that well, not because they are unfit. isner, Rajeev ram..
