Or take a vacation before Cincy and the US Open. Anyone who gets to a medal round in Paris will have a tough time playing their R1 in Montreal a few days later. Depends on who and how much they need the points and money.

5. Elena has entered the tournament in Toronto, which will start on August 6. Does she plan to participate in it?
— For tournaments of such a level as Toronto, all top tennis players are automatically registered several months before the tournament, as it is a requirement of the WTA.
Unfortunately, Elena will not be able to play in Toronto for health reasons, as she has not fully recovered from her illness and has not even been on the court yet. Her team is currently preparing medical documents to formalize her withdrawal from the Toronto
tournament.

I think something is/has been something going on in her personal life. My gut tells me some kind of abuse or outside pressure she can't escape. I say this with no proof, just a feeling.
by ponchi101 She doesn't fit the pattern. As you say, there is no proof.
The examples we have had in the past always showed some pattern. Jim Pierce, Damir Dokic, or Lucic's father were deranged figures in the player's box. Elena's coach may be a bit intense too and sometimes his comments to her are a bit rough, but he does not strike me as an abuser.
That something may be ongoing with her personal life cannot be ruled out. But I would be very careful with that possibility because, nowadays, that is a major accusation. That needs a good deal of proof.
by Suliso Something going on doesn't mean she's abused by someone. Lots of other things could be going on in someone's personal life.

by ashkor87 lovely to see Osaka back.. saw some highlights on Youtube.. power and depth were simply overwhelming against Jabeur.. if she plays like this, there is nobody she cannot beat..hope she sustains this form. Ever since the rise of Swiatek, I have always believed Osaka is the only player who can challenge her, at least on hard courts and indoors.. Rybakina and Sabalenka have been a pleasant surprise..not sure Coco can actually beat Swiatek on hard courts yet.. we havent seen that happen, maybe a year or two more.

And next match she crashes to Mertens.
One match does not make a comeback. Other than the match Vs Iga at RG, Naomi has not done much. She will need more time to get to her previous level. If she does.

Kostyuk is always one of my faves, and Anisimova, but I expect Anisimova will find the courts a bit too quick for her.. beat Kasatkina very well, though, hard to do.
by jazzyg Gauff got crushed by Shnaider and I am not shocked.
Gauff is having a bad year regardless of what her record and ranking say. I am simply referring to the eye test and her reaction to the way she is playing. The courts were too fast in Toronto for her, but she is in danger of a significant fall in the next month unless she fixes her second serve and her frequently balky forehand.
by ti-amie I have always taken the results at Cincy more seriously than the results in Canada for the WTA. I agree Cori's season has been iffy but I'm more interested in what happens in Cincy.

Those matches happen. This was an outlier, and she can be back to top level soon.
Having said that: that extreme FH grip is one I would never recommend. It breaks down so easily once she gets stretched.

I saw the same 5 minute video so cant be really sure but it seems to me the problem with Coco's forehand is something more subtle than UFEs.. it is that sometimes, when she gets too close to the ball, she ends up popping it up short into the middle of the court, thereby setting up a nice finis for her opponent.. the metric we should get (admittedly difficult) is not winners or UFEs but - number of times Coco's forehand is met with a winner by her opponent.
by ponchi101 Plus. This is something that anybody can try at home. Take your racquet, and grip it like Coco. Now, extend the arm as if you are preparing for a running FH. You can see that if you get stretched, you can't bring the ball back into the court easily and, if you do, you can only hit it down the line or down the middle. Very hard to go crosscourt.
She ends up in a defensive position with herself having to stop and come back to the court, while the opponent has the full cross court BH ready.
It puts her at a disadvantage.

Yeah this data would be great. Like a winner for forced-error set up. Maybe the category is “weak shot” - a neutral ball that you played poorly and let your opponent take control.

by ponchi101 I say that exaggerated grips are troublesome, most of the times (I know Rafa's FH never was an issue, but he is an exception).
Last Friday I was watching my trainer give a lesson. The person had a 1H BH, but his grip is a very weak eastern that borders on a continental. A very weak slice and certainly he can't hit with topspin. So I asked my trainer why he had not corrected that and moved him to a more western BH grip. He sighed and said "been trying, and the person says it feels uncomfortable".
by jazzyg I am so that person. Never hit with anything but continental grip before knee problems ended my tennis playing days prematurely. Cannot fathom how I could have ever gotten comfortable with Western grip.
