by ashkor87 Collins should win this one, she is the best player in the draw...
by ponchi101 But this is not an easy field. I am surprised, considering it is in Mexico and the USO starts next week. Some really good players are showing up.

Mostly those who have had a disappointing start to the hardcourt season and need the matches to get their confidence back....
by ashkor87 And it is a 500 tournament, so certainly worth the effort...
by ponchi101 It must be. I say Collins and Navarro could be playing in Cleveland, which is much closer to NYC.
Then again, I am sure that Navarro has that Gulfstream 50 ready for takeoff within one hour of when she loses or finishes the tournament. And she will bring Collins if needed. AND it will have a masseuse and plenty of refreshments for the flight to NYC.
by ashkor87 They will have earned it

by ashkor87 saw a bit of the Andreeva-Collins match on highlights.. interesting..in the first set and a half, Collins was blowing her off the court, then Andreeva threw a switch and turned it into a foot race.. drops, subtle angles and put aways..whenever Collins tried the same, Andreeva reached them easily - moves really really well. (this is the other Andreeva ..).. also I thought Collins ran out of energy as the match went on.

well, that didnt quite work out..Andreeva beat her already.
by ponchi101 My preferred strategy when predicting WTA matches that do not involve Iga on clay is to read chicken entrails. A freshly slaughtered chicken.
I find it much more reliable than tea leaves or the locally accepted practice of coffee grinds.
by ashkor87 Pretty hard on the chickens! As a vegetarian and such, I don't eat Korean food either...can't trust it not to have some such ingredient!
by ashkor87 Ok, try again.Alexandrova is now the best player left ..Noskova next best
by ashkor87 Looking forward to Svitolina -Noskova...i expect Noskova to be a major champion one of these days..she will have to consistently beat people like Svitolina..can she?

Uhm... Navarro? A hard courts player, been playing well, still young and maturing.
by ashkor87 Yes, could be.
by ashkor87 a word on Alexandrova - she is no good on clay, that is where we would have sen her lose early.. she is much better on grass and faster courts.. she had some injury issue in the recent grass season - assuming she is recovered, she will do well again. I dont expect her to actually win the USO, but I expect her to do well. I have always rated here slightly higher than Pegula/Badosa/Sakkari on faster courts.

she did, good for her! I like Svitolina, but Noskova is the future of tennis..
by ponchi101 PART of the future. The future of the WTA will be shared between several, or even many, women.

by jazzyg The Navarro-Noskova first set was one of the highest quality sets I've seen all year.
Navarro played two beautiful points to stay alive in the tiebreak but it was not enough to overcome Noskova's outstanding ball striking and variety.

Well, Noskova beat Navarro in 2, I am surprised at the other semi though...Sun beat Alexandrova ..not really familiar with Sun.

true, and Swiatek, Saba, Coco, Rybakina have at least 10 years to go still..
of the next crop, though, I would say Noskova and Andreeva are the best...

Didn't she just make a really good run at W? I know she did have a run somewhere big.
But she is not a novice. Maybe, the Paolini effect has become more democratic.
by ashkor87 Yes, it is a new trend..folks who havent done much till the middle of their career suddenly start firing ..wonder what it tells us ..
by ashkor87 Sun got to the QF at Wimbledon this year

That you can get better even when older.
My FH is getting better than what I used to hit when I was 30. I am hitting it way harder and with more pace.
When I get to it... (I want my legs baaaaaack...
)
by ashkor87 Noskova wins Monterrey without dropping a set in the tournament! Impressive... her first tournament win at this level, I think - havent researched it, really, of course. First of many, I am confident...

I am suprised.. it is actually evidence in support of your theory, that there arent any dominant big cats in the WTA today, so anyone who strikes form and plays well on a given day, can win..
by jazzyg I am a convert to Noskova's massive potential after watching her last two matches in Monterrey. She needs to improve her movement as she gets older, but her shotmaking already is top 1 percent.
Tennis history says she will struggle in her first-round match against Putintseva at the U.S. Open because of the quick turnaround, but she might be talented enough to overcome that history. Even if she doesn't--and her results have been inconsistent all year--she's at the top of my list for young players. I'd love to see her match her game with Andreeva's.
by ashkor87 what is really unique about Noskova's game is the way she uses drop shots, not to win the point outright, but mostly to get her opponent out of position, then finishes off with a lob pass.. great serve, huge forehand, and so on, in addition but her court sense, use of position, was marvellous to see.. no other player has it in such abundance except maybe Jabeur.. but Noskova's power is much more than Jabeur's. Very impressive.
