Ruse and Badosa playing a high qualoity match.
I had not seen Ruse ever before this tournament. Good strokes, but seems like the consistency is not there. Coming back down to earth now.

Comm on Zheng Qinwen's shot that just caught the line "that's just mean isn't it?"

Qinwen wins the match 6-2, 6-1 over Niemeier in 1h21m.

Svitolina takes the first set. Given Coco's form this summer, not a shock. Let's see how the 2nd goes.

Yes. This is expected. And Svitolina is exactly the opponent she does not need. A wall that gets almost everything back. And that is very aware of that FH.

Badosa really had to fight off Ruse who was wearing THAT KIT winning a tough match 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(8).

I think it's the worst kit of the tournament. Maybe the designer didn't understand NYC in late summer temps or that women's tennis is not a "genteel sport"? (I do love the pleats but that's it).

Coco stepped her game up considerably in the last two sets, but Elian also visibly ran out of gas at the end.

A good escape. Maybe something that will get Coco going. A come from behind victory may give you a lot of confidence.

Finally a compelling match on Ashe. There's also a noticeable change in how Frances is playing and that means he's listening to David Witt. I don't know if he'll go further but this was a good win for him.

Re Shelton at the end he looked as if he had run out of ideas. He also looked as if he could not compete physically. I think it's time he and his parents had a long talk about hiring a real coach and letting his father be a supportive presence. His father never competed at this level and if Ben doesn't urge him to step aside he might not grow past the level of tennis he's at now.

I believe the dad is not the problem. Dad seems supportive and low key. Ben is the one that is so focused on "The Show" that he forgets that you don't get points for spectacularity.
And, besides. He lost a close match. He was not blown off the court. There is nothing wrong with the kid. Or his game.

Djokovic is going to lose today...his toss is too low and too close to him, Ivanisevic would have fixed it. Popyrin is playing well
