Badosa and Pegula are veering into "how can we miss you when you won't go away" territory for me. Take a week off already!

Sabalenka also plays every week, but I can forgive her because she loses in the first round every time.

I know this is over the top, but it is kind of insulting to the losing player, in this case Naomi, she just crushed.
"Oh, I have to retire from the next tournament because I have an arm injury". After you just plastered a very fine player 6-0 in the second set. With an arm injury.
I do think it's feasible that your arm might need some recovery when you just spent the last month ripping winners like you were firing them from a cannon.

Sure. But that is what we are saying. She can be and probably is tired. But that does not equal to being injured.
So take your time off. We are fine with that.

I agree, I could do without this bit of polite theater. I always figured it had something to do with contracts between the tour and tournaments - like, withdrawals had to be categorized/certified as injuries for breach-of-contract reasons. We all know that "injury" could mean anything from soreness to a broken bone.

I don't doubt that Iga has an arm issue of some sort. I'd be surprised if something wasn't achey by now. It could be more of an "injury" that she has just been managing well but doesn't want to push any further.

Regardless, no one is surprised. Comes with the territory. Just the realities of an individual sport.

Look Ruud cited a toothache (although when wisdom teeth hurt they HURT).

Shelby got her feet caught in the clay and fell when she was serving for the match... scraped up her knee.
Thus far, that's the turning point of the match, as Kanepi won the 2nd set 7-5, and pretty much walked away with the 3rd set...

To Shelby's credit, she didn't retire from the match, as so many others have done recently. That might have had something to do with it being her hometown tournament, and not wanting to disappoint the crowd.

Also to her credit she didn't run to the sideline as if she'd been mortally wounded either. You could see the fall affected her after the adrenaline rush wore off.

Fun fact: Emma Navarro also won her first round match in Charleston last year by retirement.

^ Not a good element to add to your father owning the tournament and you continuing to get questionable WildCards into the main draw. :o

Managed to catch bits and pieces of several matches today, including Hailey Baptiste, Bencic, Sloane, Riske vs McNally, and Pliskova vs Zavatska (before the storms moved in). Zavatska has great defensive skills forcing Pliskova to hit another ball.

Power was out when we got back to the hotel and just came back on. Tomorrow’s weather forecast isn’t looking great, which is disappointing as there are a lot of players on the schedule that I’m hoping to see play.
