Re: ATP 250 Estoril, Houston, Marrakech 4/1 - 4/7 2024
The absolute worst call I have ever seen, in Estoril. Garin vs. Borges.
Garin's shot tags the baseline. Fan yells "out." Borges is startled but continues the rally. Garin, with plenty of time to understand what had happened, misses the next shot WELL wide. Umpire gives point to Garin! I think the umpire said he "didn't see it" - Garin's shot - and had to give it to Garin because... it might have been in? But it was like three feet out! Just to the side of the umpire's chair! The supervisor heard Borges out and stuck with the umpire's original call! My goodness, use the video!
I think Garin argued that Borges stopped playing after he (Borges) returned the ball, because Borges sort of dropped his racket to his side and wasn't on his toes. But that's not hindrance. It wasn't egregious. He was a little confused. Garin still has to keep playing. It maybe should have been a let. Borges was willing to replay it.
At worst, it should have been a let. At best, Garin should have lost the point. He went on to win the game and the match. Such a shame.

Matteo's win didn't seem as close as the scoreline might indicate
