Re: '24 Aus Open Day 12 Order of Play and Discussion
well.
Gotta say good job to Sabalenka. One match to go.
I did not expect a 2 set match. Figured it would go 3.
Sadly, I made the call to go with Gauff on my A Month in the Sun team. But...that's life.

It was harder than I expected. I was thinking more like 6-2, 6-3.

What happened to Coco? I saw she was serving for the first set! I had to go off to run a workshop so couldn't watch...

Re: '24 Aus Open Day 12 Order of Play and Discussion
She had a mid-court forehand at 30-15 that would have given her two set points, and she got tentative and dumped it in the middle of the net. Sabalenka went on to win a number of points in a row to break back, and take a decisive lead in the tie-breaker.

Same... Coco returned so well. But it was always on Aryna's racket.

Sabalenka won 6 in a row from that point, went up 4-0 in the breaker.skatingfan wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2024 11:23 amShe had a mid-court forehand at 30-15 that would have given her two set points, and she got tentative and dumped it in the middle of the net. Re: '24 Aus Open Day 12 Order of Play and Discussion
Sabalenka wobbled in the first set after building that 5-2 lead but her form was too good overall to let her down. Some of her missed volleys, though, were shocking, including the one that would have given her a 2-0 lead in the second set and would have allowed her to run away with it.
Zheng is playing at a higher level that Gauff. Sabalenka will need to avoid a similar wobble, although there's no telling how Zheng will react to playing in her first final.

I hope it's competitive but I think Sabalenka will dominate the final. She was a bit nervy in the semi but that's to be expected.jazzyg wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2024 2:32 pm Sabalenka wobbled in the first set after building that 5-2 lead but her form was too good overall to let her down. Re: '24 Aus Open Day 12 Order of Play and Discussion
DUE to my of-course need for Geriatric Beauty Sleep - I didn't watch the second set. But, with the first set- it was very interesting (and inevitable) seeing Sabalenka's and Gauff's Forever Problematic Match Problem Areas rear their Forever Ugly Little Heads. Ultimately in that first set- Coco's forehands and serves (Roddick taught ya THOSE serves Coco?!?!) lost to Arnya's Mental Lapse Chokes. Sabalenka just bombed her winners in to take that first set. Well done. LOL, one more win- and Sabalenka's already in the Tennis HOF with Petra and Mugsy.
