Re: WTA 250 Rouen 4/15 - 4/21 2024
She is not a great player; she is a very good player. And it is precisely because what you just said. She has a bunch of inexplicable losses, until you realize that she has so many they explain themselves.
She is as good a player as Ana Ivanovic. One slam, one slam final, and a very decent career. But greatness is a bit too much of a label.

Agreed, Good Sloane is very good, but disappears all too often, inexplicably.

I think it is partly because her game is so subtle, it is not about brute force or even clever placement...difficult to maintain such a game day after day. I wouldn't know, Sloane is the only person who knows ..

WTA 250 Rouen 4/15 - 4/21 2024
I don’t think she has been committed to maxxing out her game. Prefers to live a balanced life. She has left a lot on the table IMO. Her perogative.Owendonovan wrote:Agreed, Good Sloane is very good, but disappears all too often, inexplicably.

Ivanovic was in two other slam finals in addition to her slam win. And two other times she lost in semis. She also won 3 Tier I events against one for Stephens. Not to mention being #1. Granted, Stephens is still active, but at this moment their careers don't quite measure up. Somewhat similar, but on the closer look - not quite. Ivanovic career win-loss percentage is 66%. Sloane's is 56%. This is a huge difference.ponchi101 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 20, 2024 3:09 pm She is not a great player; she is a very good player. And it is precisely because what you just said. Re: WTA 250 Rouen 4/15 - 4/21 2024
sometimes it's a smell test. I think Ivanovic was better and had a better career, starting with #1 in the world. Sloane got to #3 after winning the US Open. No. 1 is special. Sloane has had the longer career but Ivanovic had better results and also was simply more of a star.mick1303 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 21, 2024 2:03 pmIvanovic was in two other slam finals in addition to her slam win. Sloane could have had a better career, probably, but chose to be content not fulfilling her full potential.

It was fascinating watching Sloane play tennis as if she was interested in what she was doing. When Linette raised her game in the second set I figured Sloane would check out but she didn't. There are so many what-ifs regarding her career.

It is a bit silly to compare Sloane with Ivanovic..just because they both one major title? Personalities, game style, are quite different . Could compare Sloane with someone like Dementieva maybe.

I was comparing them in the sense of calling either one "great".
So looked for a one slam winner that had a solid career. That was the extent of my simile.
