Two more things: there's no right or wrong answer here. I'm just presenting a concept you can use to think through why you like or dislike an outfit.

Secondly, if you want to know why Obama's tan suit was controversial, here's a thread

I'm going to say this.

As a man Obama did not want to project "warmth". Cool, calm, efficient is what he wanted to project at all times. I agree that the tone of the suit washes him out but the last thing he would want to do is come in "hot" due to the political situation he faced.

The Vice President has a different issue. She wants to show that she has the guts and toughness to handle the office she aspires to but she also needs to show that she's not a ball-breaking rhymes with witch. She needs to project a sense of warmth and ugh, femininity as well as the characteristics associated with men. Also, the tone of the suit works well with her color.

Obama had swagger. You can't get that; it is something you have or you don't.
Kamala doesn't have it. Tiny is not that he doesn't have swagger; he is the embodiment of anti-swagger. He always looks like a 💩 in a suit.
This guy obviously knows about fashion. But sometimes, he uses some people as examples that are very hard to emulate. Like when he used Brian Ferrys as an example.

Swagger is not something usually associated with women though...

If a woman is said to have "it" the connotation is something completely different. Remember all the talk about Palin and how when she walked across a room in stiletto's she made all the men feel some kind of way? ;)

Don't forget my frame of reference is North American Puritanism. The Vice President has to walk a fine line and it's not easy.

100% agree. I also think that color suited Obama better than the suit Harris wore suited her, so I disagree with Derek Guy; but agree all was intentional on both sides.

Massimo
@Rainmaker1973
Today is Keanu Reeve's 60th birthday.

You may not know that he was abandoned by his father at 3 years old and grew up with 3 different stepfathers. He is dyslexic. His dream of becoming a hockey player was shattered by a serious accident. His daughter died at birth. His wife died in a car accident.

He has no bodyguards, no luxury houses.

In 2010, on his birthday, he walked into a bakery and bought a brioche with a single candle, ate it in front of the bakery, and offered coffee to people who stopped to talk to him.

Keanu lives in an ordinary apartment and likes wandering around town and is often seen riding a subway or simply eating a cupcake in NYC.

I did not know all of that.
I have always liked him. Seems as simple a person as can be (in the good sense).

The shtick of this guy is to police the style superiority of the liberal left and mock every non-lefty for being a weirdo or deplorable.

He’s of course right. Hoi polloi don’t dress as well, they don’t get it. They cannot decipher the subtle codes of the upperclass, la distinction.

This cultural and symbolic capital is most valuable to the liberal elites. It makes their creed, however factually wrong or even evil, a social aspiration to everyone. These people feel utter contempt for the poor shmock but even more so for the social climber who’s made a fortune or pulled himself out of misery by other means but just doesn’t get class.

Ultimately the politics of the left is nothing but this style policing, an amalgam of expensive beliefs and conspicuous empathy. They hold their believes not because they are true or helpful but because they signal distinction, because they ARE expensive. They show off that they can afford them.

Derek Guy also doesn’t get that if McGregor were able to decipher the codes, the codes would need to change. It’s not that McGregor doesn’t get what’s “comme il faut” but that it’s such BECAUSE McGregor doesn’t get it. He’s set up to fail. It’s zero sum. It’s a racket.
