Re: ATP & WTA rankings
He has been consistent, has a slam final, and one MS1000 this year. All other players have been off for a while.

Re: ATP & WTA rankings
There is no big 3 on either tour at the moment - there are the top 3 which are Sinner, Zverev, and Alcaraz on the ATP, and Swiatek, Sabalenka, and Pegula on the WTA.

Yes, isn't it strange? With Alcaraz and Medvedev, not to mention Djokovic around? Who thinks Zverev is better than those players?

I agree that the term implies an extended period of staying power that none of the current crop of top players have achieved.skatingfan wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2024 11:42 pm There is no big 3 on either tour at the moment - there are the top 3 which are Sinner, Zverev, and Alcaraz on the ATP, and Swiatek, Sabalenka, and Pegula on the WTA.

Re: ATP & WTA rankings
Towards the end of the year, the Race gives us a better sense- on the men's, Zverev is #2 but only a nose ahead of Alcaraz..on the women's, Rybakina is #3, Paolini is #4.. sounds much more sensible to me.. we (i, at least) tend to consider the calendar year to be the unit of time - not rolling 52 weeks.

Re: ATP & WTA rankings
Pegula made the final in the previous 3 significant events on the tour whereas Paolini has lost in the round of 16 in two, and not played the 3rd, and Rybakina has one win since Wimbledon. The year-to-date rankings are starting to veer to the actual rankings but they are not there yet, and there's still 3 significant events on the calendar left to be played.ashkor87 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 12:26 am Towards the end of the year, the Race gives us a better sense- on the men's, Zverev is #2 but only a nose ahead of Alcaraz..on the women's, Rybakina is #3, Paolini is #4.. sounds much more sensible to me.. we (i, at least) tend to consider the calendar year to be the unit of time - not rolling 52 weeks.

Re: ATP & WTA rankings
You were picking the year-to-date ranking over the official rankings to discount Pegula's position at the top of the game so why not look at an even more recent period of time? Isn't her recent run of form, and Rybakina's lack of form & injury likely to continue over at least the next few weeks leading to the end of the year?

Re: ATP & WTA rankings
The race to Saudi (?!) has a twist .Krejcikova will qualify as Major champion so long as she stays in the top 20 - she is #10 right now. Collins at 8 would normally be in the race, has to overtake Navarro to get there..can she? Probably yes .. There are still 4000 points to go, apparently - mostly in the Far East. QZ is just 8 points behind Collins...I would expect her to make it since it is her backyard..

I don't see 4000 though..Beijing has 1000..is there a Wuhan event too? Plus a couple of 500 level events .

Re: ATP & WTA rankings
There's a 500 events this week, Guadalajara, and next, Seoul, then 1000 events at Beijing, and Wuhan, then another 500 event in China, and the WTA Finals are worth 1500 points. Most of the top players aren't playing Guadalajara, so that leaves 4000 points for the rest of the season if someone runs the table.

Re: ATP & WTA rankings
I think it will be Navarro and Krejcikova in 7th and 8th spot for the YEC. Positions 3-6, while not officially in, are too far ahead. Zheng is certainly possible too, but needs to make up 500 points relative to Navarro. Collins will not be a factor.

Re: ATP & WTA rankings
For men it's a similar situation. The first three are officially in and the next three (Medvedev, Fritz and Ruud) are extremely likely. The last two spots will be between Rublev, de Minaur and Djokovic. Surely Djokovic can overtake the other two if he still has a motivation to do so. After that it's a big drop, someone would have to do amazingly well.

That isn't the reason I was looking at the race..skatingfan wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 3:56 amYou were picking the year-to-date ranking over the official rankings to discount Pegula's position at the top of the game so why not look at an even more recent period of time?
