That's where playing Pegula instead "mattered" as it got rid of the chance of a 3-way tie at 1-2. It meant Krejickova had to win no matter what to advance as it could have only been a two way tie at 1-2, and then Swiatek gets it because of head to head.

If Switaek was paying attention to scenarios perhaps she saw her match mattered before Pegula withdrew.

Coco beats Sabalenka to take a 5-4 edge in their H2H.

Gauff has beaten Zheng in the only match they have played, 7-6, 6-1 in Rome earlier this year

Out of 60 Grand Slam winners in WTA in Open Era only 22 also have YEC. Gauff joined this list as #23. Out of all those only she and Iga are active players. Maybe also Kvitova will return to competing. Or Barty )
