I teach a language class, but recently discovered that my 9th graders didn't know the difference between the US states and the concept of the USA as a country. They also didn't understand the difference between a country and a continent. They claim they were never taught this information (we all know how that excuse goes...). I'd like to say that nothing in regards to their ignorance surprises me any more, but I found this episode particularly disconcerting.

What rudimentary knowledge gaps have you discovered this year? I'm sure you'll all top mine, which is both a comfort and a tragedy.

I asked my third graders which number was greater, 52 or 50. They all had a conversation with each other and decided as a class that the answer was 50.

My 9th graders generally can't use a ruler to measure length. Specifically, they:

Don't know how to line up the starting point (some rulers do have the zero on the literal edge but they don't check and don't always line up correctly even with a tape measure or meter stick).

Can't decide which inch or centimeter mark to use

Can't determine the nearest fraction of an inch (even if it's the half inch mark) or centimeter, they just don't know what to do with the millimeter lines at all

Can't identify which unit the ruler is marked in

Teacher, trying to make a point that x = 3 is the same as 3 = x: "How far from your house to school?"
Student: "Uh, like 3 miles."
Teacher: "Ok, and how far from school to your house?"

I had a student who told me her mom was currently teaching her older brother (recent grad) how to tie shoes as he was going into the Marines and would need to be able to do it on his own.

I had a senior of my own who didn't know the months of the year. Yes, he has a phone. No, he's never noticed what those three letters next to the day mean.

Nothing surprises me anymore.

As a para this year that spent 10 years teaching overseas, the most shocking knowledge gaps I've seen are from the teachers themselves.

Just today, the Earth Science teacher said, "yeah, in some other languages, they spell color with 'ou'". During this same class, she was labeling the continents on a 2D drawing of a globe (which obviously only showed one half of the Earth), and she labeled Eastern Russia as Europe and India as Africa. She's in her 5th year of teaching this class.

And we wonder why the leopards are feasting...

Proposal- if a student can’t read beyond a third grade level then they should remain in a third grade class until they can pass.
Pedagogy & Best Practices
I hear it everyday, that students are underperforming and being passed along. All teachers are seeing this across all grade levels, even at the collegiate level. Then we hear that the new generation of workers are some of the lowest quality workers, or even “negative workers” meaning they add more work than they accomplish.

How feasible of an idea is it to simply suggest that, if the student is way below grade level that they don’t move on to the next grade level. Maybe the added embarrassment of being a 13 year old in a class with 8 year olds will reinforce them to get their (expletive) together. Then, no matter how long it takes them, or how old they are when they finally graduate, they actually know how to read, how to do math, and all the other basic principles needed to begin their lives as educated people who can positively contribute to society.

This was the case when I grew up. This is why it stopped.

I have a student in 8th grade this year who's been stuck on a third grade reading level according to iReady, but that's the lowest reading level it will score. It's possible that his reading level is even lower. I've taught him for two years, and I taught his older sister, too. I'm very familiar with the parents. They are in complete denial about their child's learning issues. He has the attention span of a goldfish, but they refuse to get him tested for ADHD. The mother literally just does his homework for him.

We just give him a "C" and pass him on his way, to placate the parents. When the teachers fought for the student to get help in the past, the parents raised hell and threatened to get lawyers involved. If the mom wants to do this kid's work all the way through high school, that's her problem.

You know what line of work I am in. And I always say we are the 3rd most hated industry in the world. People ask me then what are #1 and #2.
I have always said that #1 is Insurance.

Only in the US. We hardly have any insurance industry at all..I have health insurance but never used it ..healthcare is simply not that expensive here...the question to ask in the US is why healthcare is so expensive, not why insurance is so bad..
