Trump Moves Inauguration Indoors Amid Forecast of Extreme Cold
The change, a rare break with tradition, will deny Mr. Trump the pomp and large audience he hoped for at his second swearing-in.

President-elect Donald J. Trump said Friday that his inauguration would be moved inside the Capitol Rotunda because of weather concerns.

The change for Monday’s events means that far fewer people will be able to watch the moment when Mr. Trump officially becomes the 47th president, limiting it to a much smaller group of invited guests indoors and those watching on television.

But the switch means the attendees, security officials and spectators will not have to endure dangerous conditions while watching in the bitter cold for hours. It also avoids the potential for smaller crowds because of the weather; the reports that he had smaller crowds in 2017 than President Obama had at his 2009 inauguration enraged Mr. Trump and sent him on a dayslong effort to produce a counternarrative.

The conversation within Mr. Trump’s circle this week had focused on the extreme cold that is forecast for Monday, when temperatures are projected to drop to a low of 11 degrees Fahrenheit with a high of only 23 degrees.

The last time a swearing-in moved indoors was in 1985 for President Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration, amid similar conditions.

“The weather forecast for Washington, D.C., with the windchill factor, could take temperatures into severe record lows. There is an Arctic blast sweeping the Country,” Mr. Trump wrote on his social media website, Truth Social.

“I don’t want to see people hurt, or injured, in any way. It is dangerous conditions for the tens of thousands of Law Enforcement, First Responders, Police K9s and even horses, and hundreds of thousands of supporters that will be outside for many hours on the 20th (In any event, if you decide to come, dress warmly!),” he wrote.

He added that he had ordered that his own address, various speeches and prayers would take place in the Rotunda.

He said that he plans to use Capital One Arena, which sits several blocks from the National Mall, for people to gather to watch the inaugural events live, and said he would join them there afterward.

His inaugural parade is also now expected to be incorporated into the viewing party at Capital One Arena in Washington, according to Mr. Trump’s social media post.

Former Presidents Obama, Clinton and Bush won't attend Trump's inaugural lunch
The three former presidents will attend the swearing-in ceremony earlier in the day.

Former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush will not attend President-elect Donald Trump's traditional inaugural lunch.

Obama received an invitation but declined to attend, according to a source familiar with the matter. Clinton also was invited but does not plan to attend, according to a second source familiar with the matter, while Bush's office said it was not tracking an invitation to the luncheon.

Former Secretary of State and first lady Hillary Clinton also received an invitation to the inaugural luncheon but will not attend, according to a third source familiar with the matter.

A spokesperson for Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the absences.

All three former presidents, however, will attend Trump's swearing-in ceremony earlier in the day, according to their teams. The former first ladies will also attend the swearing-in ceremony except for Michelle Obama, according to the Obamas’ office. No reason was provided. Michelle Obama also did not attend the funeral service last week for former President Jimmy Carter, making hers the only absence among all living current and former presidents and first ladies.

Inauguration Day is one of the only occasions when all former living presidents usually congregate to usher in the next administration. Trump, however, declined to attend President Joe Biden's inauguration in 2021.

None of the living former presidents supported Trump's candidacy. Bush did not make an endorsement, and Obama and Clinton actively campaigned for Vice President Kamala Harris.

The Clintons attended the luncheon in 2017 after Trump defeated Hillary Clinton. During the luncheon, he encouraged a standing ovation for her.

"I was very honored, very, very honored when I heard that President Bill Clinton and Secretary Hillary Clinton was coming today,” Trump said at the time.

The inaugural luncheon tradition stems from a lunch the Senate Committee on Arrangements hosted in 1897 for President William McKinley and guests at the Capitol, according to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC), which hosts the luncheon.

In 1953, the JCCIC began hosting the luncheon for the incoming president and vice president and their guests. Politicians typically deliver speeches and toast the new administration.

Aren't all 3 of them supposed to be arrested when Trump takes office, or was that just a first time distraction?

Correct me if I am wrong. After he insulted Carly Fiorina online, they met for the debates (2016 election cycle) and she told him "say it now to my face".
And he chickened.
He is just a bully, and bully's are all the same. You just have to hit them hard once, and the true colors show up.

I think Tiny is afraid that the crowd will be sparse. Holding his event inside allows for producers to make pretty pictures for TV viewers.

Second, I think he's afraid he won't look his "best" whatever that is.

BTW some MAGAt's are upset that they've spent money for hotels, etc and that by announcing the change so late they can't get refunds.
