I agree with everything that has been said. The proper cut-off time is the start of play. If a withdraw happens after the start of play, then the winning player is a valid pick. If the withdraw happens before the start of play, then the winning player is not a valid pick. I also agree with texasniteowl that this is not an ideal rule, and that some people's ability to make valid picks might be impaired because the time zone they live in. However, I also agree with mmmm8, in that this is the least unfair solution to the problem. I also know that mmmm8 has been around for a long time and probably has the best rememberance of how the rule has been applied in this situation, historically.

For better or worse, all TAT contests will have slight advantages to people in right time zones, or able to be online right at deadline. Especially Biggest Loser when there is a qualifying match going on right before main draw

And we had a good example of how it can become sticky just last year at FO when Djokovic withdrew before quarterfinal making that match unpickable. Was just bad luck for anyone who needed it to beat draw, although it wound up just making a big 8-way tie anyway.

I even said "Ruud won't be playing so you won't be able to pick him tomorrow. If Djokovic had withdrawn after the thread was posted you probably could have made the pick before he withdrew."

Perricard is a strictly second-rate player, after his serve, there is nothing - all his shots look shaky.. I was cursing myself for picking him on day 1 but there were few good options so I survived.. but too many people backed him in the scond round! The decline of Tsitsipas is sad, to say the least.. he is a fun player to watch.. oh well.

I love how quickly you dismiss players after a single loss.
Perricard has reached #29 in the world, at age 20. Yes, the serve is a bazooka, but the FH is also very big. And, at this age, he has already won 2 titles.
I don't want to speak for the others that died yesterday with this pick, but I picked him because, while Perricard is "only" a serve, what is Dzumhur? No weapons, a lot of defense, but this is a player that is coming back, at age 30, from an infection (I think) so severe that he could have died. Plus, the winner got to play Alcaraz in the next round.

If Perrricard gets to move into the top 10 in a couple of years, ala Draper, I will not be surprised. He has weapons. The consistency is what is missing, as we sadly learned yesterday.

I have seen him play. The serve is huge. The FH is also a big and the BH, to me, is lovely, because it is a good looking one hander.
His consistency makes Laconte look rock solid. He is a very good example of the French school: gorgeous strokes, a madman juggling two chainsaws at the same time.
The age in which serve-bots could reach a high ranking just because of their serve is over. You need something else to reach #29.

I'm with ashkor on this one.

I've noted multiple times how few points Perricord wins on his opponent's serve. Sometimes it is less than one point put game for an entire match. HIs return of serve is particularly wretched, and while he does have a big forehand, his footwork is extremely poor and his attention to detail is subpar.

His serve is good enough to win matches by itself, but he will have to improve significantly in every other aspect to be a real factor.
