Yep, very tough draw. Drew the most dangerous floater, in all likelihood. I only started watching at the beginning of the second set, but from what I’ve seen/heard so far, her wrist (from when she fell at the very end of the Montreal semi-final) has been a problem.

Weird moment early in the set. There was a full two minute delay, while Krejcikova, plus Mboko and the chair umpire, searched all over for a dampener that Krejcikova had lost on a big misfit of an overhead. They looked under the player’s chair, had to move the big metal cooler, umpire was on her hands and knees looking, before she finally found it.

Keys steals the first set 7-6 after 34 UFE's and 5 DF's saving 5 set points.

Bold prediction - Keys will not win another large tournament. She has achieved her dream of winning a GS and that is enough for her.

Rough day at the office for Keys so far, so has made a Sabalenka-like 85 UFEs so far in this match

Out goes Keys with 14 double faults. Sooner than I expected.

Clervie Ngounoue takes the 2nd set against Kalinskaya. She would be a force on the tour if she didn't try to hit a winner with every shot.

89 unforced errors.

89.

I'm so happy Maddie finally won a slam and things came together for her at the Aussie, but this is an example of why it's hard to see her winning another.

Agree with both. She has got to be one of the less driven players ever, and, with her amount of talent, a total underachiever.
Imagine her game with Paolini's drive.
Other than she is a very nice person, she is the Kyrgios of the WTA. Sure, a slam winner, but she should be a constant force in the tour.

Mboko didn't pick up a racket for a week after the win. Between the celebration, the wrist, the hype, and the draw, it was a tall ask to win a round. Krejcikova was good, too.

Not that bold. I agree. Too much muscle memory to reprogram. She gets tight. I don't know if she is complacent or not.

Victoria seemed heavily hampered by her taped-up wrist today. Barbora comes through the rough 1st round draw to face Uchijima next.

The wrist was very heavily taped.

I was worried about the wrist for Mboko, and also very surprised by the number of members of tennis media that were asking whether she could win the tournament, and/or were predicting at least semifinal run.

I think I've run out of patience with these Venus Williams wildcards...when she loses tonight, this is it, right? Enough is enough?
