Kasatkina and Bejlek also gave wos...wonder what is going on! They both did well in the previous weeks so maybe just wear and tear...but wta need to figure it out and do something better than threatening players...

Re: WTA 1000 Dubai 2/15 - 2/21 2026
There is nothing you can do about these retirements. The top players make enough money to skip whatever they want. Anybody making 3rd round at Doha made enough money to skip Dubai comfortably and fly back to California, to get ready for IW.
But if you cut down the number of tournaments, the players ranked 50 and below then start suffering. So, you can't have a laid back schedule.
And if you threaten any player with a major fine/penalty (DQ from the next slam) they will produce a doctor's note saying they are injured.
Look at the NBA. The amount of obvious tanking is so intense that even the commissioner is fining teams left and right. And nothing is happening.
So, it is not the WTA/ATP. It is just that professional sports have become so rich that the incentives to play are really no longer there.

Re: WTA 1000 Dubai 2/15 - 2/21 2026
6 weeks into the season and already 3 walkovers and a bunch more retirements in the third round of a significant tournament. Add to it that the top 2 players didn’t even show up and maybe it’s time to downgrade the level of these two tournaments

We will soon get a better fix on how good Jovic is..Pegula is the ultimate test, the gatekeeper..only a great player can beat her.
Pegula is top Tier2.
Pegula is top Tier2.

Oh no doubt Jovic is a better player, but Shnaider’s results have also tailed off from when she first came on tourashkor87 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 4:59 amI don't know about that..Shnaider played well, Jovic played better..maybe J is simply betterJTContinental wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 2:30 amCoco always unimpressive in Doha/Dubai

Jovic is a promising young player, but not yet top 10 level. Pegula had no issues today.

So now Rybakina and Gauff are the only Tier 1 players left..Pegula, Bencic and Svitolina are top of Tier 2. As of now, Andreeva and Anisimova are knocking on the door of Tier 1 but haven't burst through yet.

Re: WTA 1000 Dubai 2/15 - 2/21 2026
Mertens has now played in the two worst WTA matches between good players I've ever seen.
Seven years ago, she lost in a third-set tiebreak on clay to Venus when both players were inept. Today, she blew three match points in the second-set tiebreak against Gauff in a match when both players were pathetic. Gauff served 16 double faults, including three in a row in the last game she lost, but she still won 6-3 in the third because Mertens could not keep the ball in the court and had her own critical double faults. I lost an hour-and-a-half of my life I will never get back.
