One might add Garcia to the list of those 'going backwards'.
She is currently a set and a break down to Cirstea, who beat her at Indian Wells (the broadcast of the match just went dead due to 'technical difficulties').
Garcia's game is very aggressive, and so, high risk. As such, it is prone to peaks and valleys - with a high risk game like that, it only takes a few bad points to shake the confidence... and confidence is an essential ingredient when playing aggressive, high risk tennis.
ashkor87 wrote: Fri Mar 24, 2023 5:00 pm Fair enough..all I can say is I see nothing very special in Pegula',s game..she is a solid professional..to me, Alexandrova has something more. I am not much impressed by rankings, anyway. I am only contrasting her with Pegula because they are both close to 30, and because everyone here is so high on Pegula, for no reason I can see. I do get the point about injuries but all players are going through that these days.
^ As rankings are based on results, it's safe to say that you're not much impressed by results, either.
But if a player isn't to be judged/assessed on their results, what else is there to judge them by? Potential? Potential is worth nothing until it is achieved.

Apparently, the broadcasts of ALL current matches (WTA and ATP) are out - 'technical difficulties'.
Indian Wells had consistent problems with their audio feeds within the stadium.
Too much dependence on technology, and not knowing what to do when it fails...

If Kenin keeps her current form, her match against Andreescu is a toss up.

I watch via the App and the picture has been going in and out for two days now. Of all the big tournaments you'd think this one would be the last one to have issues like this.

Already mentioned above, but Garcia is going back too. So, last year MAY BE the anomaly in her career, not the true level.

Kvitova just beat young Noskova 3 and love in what the commentator described as being "ruthless".
That's not a very nice thing to do as a role model. Jeez - at least encourage her career a little bit and let her win a few games... ;)

Leylah vs. Bencic is up next on the same court (Buchholz).

Bencic over Leylah 6-1 in the 1st set in 27 minutes.
Leylah has left the court (presumably to look for her game).

Leylah started terribly 2 days ago vs. Tsurenko, as well, but at 1-4 in that one, she came on and then couldn't miss - she played great. But Bencic is a higher quality player than Tsurenko, and didn't allow her to come back this time.

Leylah was off the court for a long time - they said it's a long walk from the court to the locker room.
If this continues, the match will be over within about 30 minutes.

Ouch.
Bencic 1 and 1 over Leylah.
Leylah couldn't hit the court - she looked as bad as I've ever seen her. It didn't seem to be a physical problem or injury - just bad play that snowballed.

Sabalenka narrowly escaped with the 1st set over Rogers, 6-4. She was in control of the set, but Shelby came back and almost tied it. And after Rogers broke her to begin the 2nd set, Sabalenka took a medical time out and had her thigh/groin area tended to.

Very impressed with Bencic and yes, with Adrreescu ..beating Sakkari here is not trivial. Can we hope for a revival now, anything approaching her past heights? Somehow, I feel there is still some spark missing in her game..

Andreescu, to me, is the opposite of Leylah. She has power. But the injuries piled up too high and too quickly.
Agree on the "spark" thing. But if she finds it, she can become a factor again.

Speaking of sparks. Taro Daniel has broken Zverev three straight times, en route to a 6-0. Another one with a missing spark?
