You are spoiled with Caribbean access. I'd much rather go somewhere else, but Cancun is so easy to get to from the Midwest. We don't have nonstop flights to any other beaches outside of the US, if any. Not even Puerto Rico. Isla Mujeres is much more local and the main beach used to be as pretty as any in the Caribbean. They've messed it up with development, erosion and day boats from Cancun.ponchi101 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 4:31 pmNot for me. When I want to go to a Caribbean scenery, I choose Costa Rica. Way more low-key, smaller, nice people, and closer to me. And you can do both the Caribbean scene AND Pacific scene, without having to drive too much.meganfernandez wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 3:18 pmThen stay on Isla Mujeres and take the ferry back and forth. it is crazy how much the city has grown. I don't think ANYTHING was there 50-70 years ago. No roads or any development. I'm dying to go to Merida, too.
I have no problem with a nice big resort or all-inclusive, as long as the atmosphere isn't a party scene. The Riviera Maya coast south of Cancun has a billion choices for about any taste, and the beaches are really nice. Some too choppy for good swimming. That's my opinion...
But sure, Mexico's got it down pat. Their resorts and tourist areas are very nice. Just a bit too much for my taste.
(Oh, and I have Curazao at 90 minutes of flight, so... )
I used to work for a travel club based out of Indy that chartered planes for nonstop flights to a lot of Caribbean and Mexican destinations. it was fantastic, for people who lived here and for staffers. I could go for free when there was space available, like an airline employee. We were owned by a regular airline and probably not profitable, which is why no other travel clubs like ours (with charter air and membership() existed. Miss those days.
