My goodness, these people are competing in three weeks!! I kind of feel bad for wanting to see it. They need a long break.

I agree..only players who qualified for neither the YEC nor Elite, would have had enough down time...meganfernandez wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 12:55 pm Amy goodness, these people are competing in three weeks!! I kind of feel bad for wanting to see it. They need a long break.

Surprised Woz is not playing...she must be well-rested by now? Would be very interesting to see how Osaka does...some people need match practice, some don't...Osaka is so talented, she probably doesn't....?

Re: WTA 500 ATP 250 Brisbane 12/31 - 1/7 2024
Good observation on Wozniacki. But she'll play the Australian, surely. Just doesn't want to go Down Under so early. Probably has family holiday stuff and it's too soon.
Osaka is a big and fascinating question mark. Her old hitting partner said he expects her to do very well this year, because she's just better than most women on tour, but who knows if she can recapture the competitive form and mindset right away. I think she could - she knows what it takes. But it won't surprise me if she needs 6-9 months, either.

How surprised would we be if she wins the Aussie? (Osaka). Mildly surprised? Very surprised? Super surprised?

Mildly, I would say...she is a two-time champion, and trains in Florida, so she can handle the heat...

Also very surprised - only Serena has had the ability to go from zero to Grand Slam Champion that fast. Let's see her play first before we start making predictions about how successful the come back will be. She certainly sounded like she was in a good place at the US Open, but it might be different when she's back in the spotlight.

I will give her a better chance than any of the not-top-10 seeded players.
But I will be surprised. Not extremely.
