by ponchi101 How I want an Amanda/Belinda final.

by ashkor87 Both semis are intriguing .. Anisimova has a good chance of beating Sabalenka.. Saba hasnt been as dominant as expected, and Anisimova has been much more resilient than expected.. she will be able to push Sabalenka around from side to side..Swiatek should be able to beat Bencic - Bencic doesnt have the first-strike capability to push Iga back on to her backfoot, the way Saba and Ryba can.. .. but I expect this match to be full of breaks.. neither will find it easy to hold serve..Bencic is actually more effective while returning than while serving.. she really needs to fix that service toss, it is too close to her body, so she has very few options, unless she bends her back, which she doesnt, much..

me too but I cant see Bencic beating Swiatek..here, or anywhere.

by Suliso I'd not be so sure. She has beaten Iga at Slam before and their last match at Wimbledon was very close as well. Of course it's not the more likely outcome, but neither is Anisimova beating Sabalenka.

by ponchi101 If Belinda can go down the line of Iga's inside out FH, she has a chance. Iga's FH on the run is a liability because her grip makes the racquet face down.
But she has to keep her 1st serve percentage up, or Iga ill tee off it. Actually, she should go for a higher percentage, not for power.

Amanda can beat Aryba; she has the tools. Problem is, Aryna likes to match power with power. Whoever does not freak out should get it.

But I believe Iga and Aryna will prevail. No joy for me tomorrow.

by ashkor87 My guess is Swiatek will win (80%) whereas Sabalenka and Anisimova have about an even chance each.. in the finals, Swiatek will win anyway...

I can picture her beating Swiatek in straight sets at the 2021 US Open

Most likely we'll see chalk in the final, but I'm also pulling for an Anisimova/Bencic final.

by mick1303 I would much prefer Sabalenka-Swiatek. Each of them will be gunning for 3rd different slam and therefore 3rd leg of the career slam. To me it is much more interesting than first slam winners, who'll have good chances to follow Andreescu career path.

by mick1303 It is also IMV much better than Swiatek-Anisimova or Sabalenka-Bencic, because those two lineups are unbalanced with much more pressure on the more accomplished player. In the Sabalenka-Swiatek the level of pressure is about equal, which I prefer, because I like when there is less interference with players' chances. Let the game and pure tennis abilities decide.

Which one do you think is more likely to make the final? I think Bencic, but no combination of finalists will surprise me. Anisimova can beat Sabalenka if she plays freely.

A title will leave the following Slam to obtain:

Sabalenka - French (where she lost to Gauff a few weeks ago)
Swiatek - Australian

Of the two? Anisimova certainly..Bencic has very little chance

by ashkor87 Sabalenka and Anisimova are actually very similar players, aren't they ...

Of course there are more similarities than differences. But those latter are also present. Anisimova is IMO slightly better precision hitter. But her strokes are a bit flatter. Sabalenka's have "heavier" strokes - more rpm while the velocity is the same. Therefore Anisimova is capable of hitting closer to the lines. They both are mediocre movers (of course, by elite standards), but Anisimova a bit worse in this department. In all other facets the differences are even less.

by jazzyg Swiatek has not won a tourney in more than a year.

I don't see any reason why that streak would end here.

by Suliso Well, Sabalenka won't win it either.

by ponchi101 Apart from the fact that I am happy for Amanda, that was a very good quality match.
If she can beat Aryna, she can beat anybody left. That is a given after you beat a solid #1.

jazzyg wrote: Thu Jul 10, 2025 2:54 pm Swiatek has not won a tourney in more than a year.

Not any reason? The fact that she's in the semifinals against a player she's likely to beat is a good reason. And I know you posted this before Anisimova won, but she has an excellent chance against her, too. She also played very well in Bad Homberg. She lost to Pegula, sure, but it was a high-quality match, which made me think she would do well here. Anisimova could blast her off the court, but I think the nerves will get to her if she faces Iga in the finals.

by jazzyg I like Bencic to beat Swiatek.

I am flying blind a little bit because I have not seen one point of a Bencic match here, but Swiatek's forehand grip is a problem on grass. She will need to continue serving well to win.

by jazzyg I expected Anisimova to beat Sabalenka, too, but not with a lot of confidence.

Players exhibiting the form Sabalenka showed all tournament rarely win that tournament. She could have won today--a few points determined the match--but she just has not been sharp enough. Those five returns of serve she missed with set point against Raducanu were pathetic, and she was a point away from being down 5-3 in the third set against Siegemund. The only reason she went as far as she did is the women's game is very weak right now at the top. Good depth, but no greatness when Sabalenka plays like she did this fortnight.

I think she is compensating for the FH grip by getting much lower with her legs. So far, the FH has been working well.

by ashkor87 Bencic is sooo good at the drive volley....

by Suliso Swiatek too strong for Bencic today.

Suliso wrote: Thu Jul 10, 2025 4:43 pm Swiatek too strong for Bencic today.
And the FH errors are nowhere to be seen.
Looking good for Saturday too.

by FredX She may not supposed to be playing well on grass, but she’s fooling everyone this year.

by ponchi101 I'll go full arrogant here and say, again, that she won it as a junior.
I think she is playing more "1st strike" tennis. She is not constructing any points, she is just hitting. And they are falling in.

by ponchi101 ESPN L.A. saying that with this set, Iga has won 30 sets 6-0 at majors.
That is pretty impressive.
I believe she takes the title on Saturday.

by jazzyg That was a beatdown.

I am hereby disqualified from offering an opinion on players whom I have not watched earlier in the tournament.

For those who did watch, how did Bencic beat Alexandrova and Andreeva? She had nothing to offer against a very in-form Swiatek today. Nothing. To beat Swiatek, you have to stand up to her early, which Anisimova will if she is not too nervous.

The funny thing is the only match I saw Swiatek play was on the screen from Henman Hill when she blew a 4-1 first-set lead to McNally in the second round and lost it. I knew she was going to win anyway, so I left after the first set ended.

by Suliso Bencic played a lot better vs Andreeva...

by Suliso Anyway for her SF's is a great result. A good sign before her favorite US hard courts. Also back in the top 20 Monday.

by mick1303 Her FH grip is not more extreme than Rafa's. And he did ok on grass, as far as I remember.

by jazzyg Rafa changed his game for Wimbledon, standing closer to the baseline to return serve, moving into the court and using his flatter backhand tremendously. He also moved better than Swiatek on grass and did not routinely miss shots by yards, as she did even a few times today while dominating Bencic.

Also, I think her grip is more extreme, but that's definitely not my expertise as someone who never hit a topspin shot in my life.

by ti-amie I actually thought Bencic would win and that Sabalenka vs Anisimova was a toss up with a slight edge to Sabalenka. WTH happened to Bencic in the second set? A bagel?

And this year she is hitting it earlier, for which she has to stand closer to the baseline.
It was a liability for her in the past. This time, as you say, she has learned to get under the ball.
Borg's grip was also extreme. He did well too.

It was reported that her toenail got split in half. I wonder how she even finished the match.

by ponchi101 She simply did not have the power to match Iga. Iga was teeing off her groundstrokes with ease.
