by ashkor87 watched a couple of matches - court looks medium to fast - Yastremska was struggling with the pace.. this is, of course, what the AO is expected to be. Players who will thrive in these conditions - Paolini, DeMinaur, Paul, Pegula, Coco, Mboko, Andreeva. Those who will not - Anisimova, Pavlyuchenkova, even Rybakina when her serve gets returned..

by meganfernandez I'm over in the Served Substack moderating a live chat if anyone wants to pull double duty betwen here and there!

by meganfernandez Cobolli about to go out in straights to Arthur Fery. Cobolli has had the trainer out several times for, um, gastrointestinal distress.

by jazzyg Cobolli was my survivor pick, running my streak of first-day losses to three dating to the U.S. Open.

But Sakkari, at least, ended the streak.

by ti-amie Diallo took the first set 7-6(1) from Zverev but Zverev is up 3-0 second set.

Svitolina serving for the first set vs Bucsa.

Diallo lost the plot. Bagel second set. Let't see if he can get it back on track.

Baptiste and Townsend is pretty good.

by ponchi101 As always, the first few days of a slam I only get to see Argies playing, because ESPN LA will show nothing more.

Are you complaining that you had to watch Etcheverry-Kecmanovic?

US fans are pissed because they can't watch show courts without ESPN Unlimited, which is $30/month.

by ponchi101 Actually, yes. I am complaining. :)
Because the other option is Comesaña/Kypson. From a low angle camera.

Cerundolo?

by ashkor87 Shocking defeats - Kostyuk and Alexandrova, also Yastremska... will have to watch carefully to understand what happened..

by ashkor87 I did watch the Yastremska match, she seemed unable to cope with the speed of the court. Kostyuk seems to have rolled her ankle during the match.. Alexandrova, I dont know.. I hear the crowd got into the act, maybe she doesnt know how to handle such things

by ponchi101 Why would Yastremska's loss be shocking? Ruse is ranked 77, and a veteran. Just one of those days.

by Suliso Kostyuk looked really good just a week ago, though.

by ponchi101 She gave a lot of points in AMITS. And now...
That is the reason she has never been tops. She has so many of this "what happened?" losses.

by jazzyg Ruse improved to 4-0 against Yastremska in her "shocking" win.

I watched the end of Kostyuk's match. Both players were in terrible form. She rallied from a deficit in match tiebreak to get to 7-all, then dumped the next three points in ugly fashion.

by dryrunguy I had never seen Jacquemot before. Her serve was a wild watch, especially in the tight moments. At first, I decided she had a few hitches in her motion. And then I decided she had hitches AND a penchant for chasing her toss--wherever it was, and I mean WHEREVER IT WAS. She needs to be enrolled in Venus' 5-minute "How to Catch Your Toss--And Why You Should" clinic. Hard to watch.

But in spite of that and the occasional double fault at really bad times, she ended up getting some really funky action on some of these accidental serves that were brutal for Kostyuk to handle--the kind of funk a rightly shouldn't be able to pull off. Shades of Dementieva serving to Lindsay. Yeah, hard to watch. But she persevered in the ground game, and that ended up being the difference.

by mick1303 Brooksby is a tricky player: strong mentally, has a wide variety of patterns, good anticipation. He generally plays quite clean and close to the lines. But Bublik just does the same a bit better (except mental part) plus has more power. And nowadays you can't even fault Bublik regarding his mental disposition - so far he holds well this year.

Baptiste vs Townsend was a good match. Baptiste plays a very subtle crafty game while Townsend is all about power. In the end Baptiste won.

Ruse was also 3-0 vs Yastremska before yesterday.

I watched it off and on, and it was fantastic.

I've never seen Jacquemot play. She was very salty!

Bublik's current approach when he is playing is completely different. He no longer wants to just hit the one spectacular shot of the match; he is playing to win.
As I said. He is the one player that I believe can beat one of the top two.
