by Togtdyalttai Here's the place to talk about the players who you thought couldn't survive the Australian heat.

I will be adding a pick tracker and scoreboard after the first round. I won't be able to do so before Monday in the US.

by Togtdyalttai A pick tracker has been posted. Please check that I took your picks down correctly and let me know if something is wrong. Results from the first two days have also been added in.

by Togtdyalttai Round 1 was unkind to us loser-pickers. Ktothem1 leads with 16 followed by 8 players with 13. I haven't checked the data, but I would wager that 13 is the lowest first round second-place score ever. No one lost fewer than two picks.

A scoreboard has been added to the same spreadsheet the pick tracker resides in:

by ptmcmahon I started 5 for 5 and wound up 5 for 8!

I feel like we've probably done worse than 13 for second place score... probably? :)

by Togtdyalttai Round 2 saw many more losses than Round 1. Ktothem1 is still in first after losing one pick. Ponchi101 and Ptmcmahon rose above the others who scored 13 in the first round by not losing any picks in the second, and they're now tied for second, 4 points behind ktothem1.

You can track your picks and see the scoreboard in this spreadsheet.

by Togtdyalttai In round 3, it was more of the same for ponchi101 and ptmcmahon. Both surpassed ktothem1 and ponchi is now in the lead, with ptmcmahon three points back. Ponchi is the only contestant to score in double digits for the third round. On the other end, weefunk is the first to run out of picks, but shmrck14 is still 3 points behind her, so the wooden spoon for the contest is still in play.

by ponchi101 I am so about to lose those three picks next round...

You think Mboko is going to take out Sabalenka, and Paul take out Alcaraz?

Maybe 2 rounds from now...(or is that what you meant by "next" round .. after the one just starting :) )

My matches all feel about between 40 and 60% chances. I wouldn't be surprised with any combo of wins/losses.

by ponchi101 I spoke too soon. My natural response to being in first at any contest is disbelief, so I really did not see the next matches.
But yes, as you say. After this round, I am toast.

by Togtdyalttai Round 4 saw ponchi101 open up a sizeable lead of 9 points. But as he mentioned, it's tough sledding as he'll need a loss in the quarterfinals from one of the #1 seeds to earn any more points. Dave g has more picks remaining at this point than anyone else, though two of his picks will play each other in the quarterfinals.

At the other end, shmrck14 clinched the wooden spoon for the contest after their last pick won.

by ptmcmahon My hardest part will be hoping Sinner loses in semis (assuming he beats Shelton.)

But I am going to need Musetti to defeat Djokovic to truely advance more than a couple of points. I am not very optomistic about that happening.

by ponchi101 45 points is like more than I got the whole last year.

by Togtdyalttai Interestingly enough, after last night the rest of the women's tournament is completely inconsequential for the outcome of this contest.

by ponchi101 Well. It had been a while since I led in any contest at any time. This year, I let for one week at Amits and now this. So, should be happy.
But, NOOOOOO!, Cobolli and Samsonova...

Totally true, but at least I still have a decent shot to be the only one to predict the women's wooden spoon correctly. Just need Sabalenka to beat Sviitolina and then lose in the final (most likely to Rybakina if it happened).

by Togtdyalttai As I mentioned, the women's tournament is irrelevant to this contest's outcome. But there are still 3 contestants who have a shot at winning:

Ponchi101 is now out of picks, but he will win if either Jannik Sinner or Alexander Zverev loses in the men's final.
Charlie02123 will win if Carlos Alcaraz loses in the men's final.
Ptmcmahon will win if Novak Djokovic loses in the men's final.

And as Jazzyg mentioned, there are still two contestants with a women's pick, but both are too far back for that to help. The other contestant is Federex.

by ptmcmahon I probably have the longest odds, but nice to make it this far...think this is best I've done after years of contest.

by ponchi101 Uhm... I like my chances. I say Alcaraz wins the whole thing. That means that Sinner will lose in the final.
Not bad.

by Charlie02123 How exciting! I had a Sinner d Alcaraz final in my original bracket, and the path back from there oddly worked out almost exactly as I had it.

It’s been a fairly “paint by numbers” slam so far, so it’ll be interesting to see how it works out. I’m concerned with how well Zverev has been serving (not just for this contest, but on behalf of the cosmic balance of the universe).

We’ll see!

by jazzyg I have a long streak of top-10 finishes dating back to the 2023 Australian Open on the line in the women's final. I believe if Rybakina wins, the third-pick wooden spoon bonus would put me in the top 10.

by ptmcmahon Last thing left to cheer for is this contest now… so go Djokovic

Great jinx!

by ponchi101 Amazing one. Now, how can I jinx Novak? Because I cannot do a reverse jinx knowing it will be a reverse jinx.

by Togtdyalttai Well, it's Charlie02123 vs. Ptmcmahon for the medal. We're all waiting on the result of the men's final. Charlie has Jacob Fearnley, who will be the wooden spoon winner if Novak Djokovic wins on Sunday. Ptmcmahon has Yunchaokete Bu, who will be the last-place finisher if Carlos Alcaraz wins the championship. Of note is that Fearnley is also held by CanuckRaonic, dave g, and deelighted2.

On the women's side, one pick remains. Camila Osorio is held by jazzyg and will be the wooden spoon winner if Elena Rybakina defeats Aryna Sabalenka tomorrow. If Sabalenka wins the last placer will be Rebecca Sramkova.

by jazzyg Li beating Osorio 7-5 in the third set in the first round saved me from finishing dead last. Terrible picks, but at least I ended up getting the wooden spoon winner on the women's side thanks to that close call at the start.

by Togtdyalttai Congratulations, ptmcmahon! A recap will follow in a separate thread.
