5 of the 6 Keys pickers had Paolini available. We never learn.
by Suliso They might still be right...

I'm sure they are hyperventilating right now. I still think Paolini has the edge going into the third.
by ponchi101 And injuries come to play again.
This surface is becoming too tricky.

I was watching it, and indeed, she did not. But that only makes it worse. You get injured by slipping, by not slipping, by stopping hard (that was what happened to Keys). And it is not Wimbledon. It was the entire grass court season.

We can't conclude that Keys's injury was surface-related. People get injured on other surfaces, too. And most people don't get injured on grass. I doubt 50% of players are finishing the grass-court season with an injury they picked up.
by ponchi101 Your threshold to call a surface dangerous is 50%? That is high.
I would need to start looking at how many players retired from a match this season due to an injury, but I remember that they were plenty.
And, if you have a leg injury, the chances that the surface was related are not trivial.
by texasniteowl I didn't see it, but I take it Keys did something to her knee or leg? It must have felt serious for her to retire at 5-5 in the 3rd. Ouch.
Selfishly, boo. This was the best I had done in a SP so far this year.
literally as I was typing this I saw highlights of it. so sad. I don't know what the injury is, but she couldn't move. feel so bad for her.
by texasniteowl And Emma R down a break in the 3rd after a slip during the first game. We might have an SP winner today.
by Federex Dimitrov also retired injured today..
Very likely we got a winner today now.
Shoul have saved Vekic for another round lol.
by JTContinental It’s possible that we could have our winner very shortly
by JTContinental And now we do! I’ve opened a day 8 thread so we can all live vicariously through the champ
by tennisbrp Is someone going to wake me up? Donna Vekic for the win??????? How many times has she left courts sobbing in the third set why I wonder what on Earth I picked her for..... funny truth is I wrote Raducanu and then my spouse (blomgren on here) lost to Lulu when she beat Zhu so once I thought there would not be a two timer slayer in this household I switched it immediately.
by naughtyT Congratulations to Tennisbrp for surviving the madness and winning SP.

ponchi101 Amazing, Tennisbrp!

by Irena2 Congratulations Tennisbrp!!! Is this the earliest TAT has ever crowned a SP champ?

I think there has been at least one first Friday finish...
by mu_royals I should have picked Paolini. I had it in my head to take her but then looked at the odds and saw Keys was a moderate favorite and decided to switch to Badosa who was a slight favorite. Should have gone with my gut although in truth either match was a toss-up.

The huge problem is- sometimes your gut saves you, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you shouldn't stick with your first choice, sometimes you should. I have had picks that saved match points, and picks that had match points and lost.
It. Is. All. Insanity.

Both matches were crapshoots. The women's game in unpredictable, especially on grass and with Sabalenka out. Fun to watch, murder to SP.
by Merdon Congrats tennisbrp and thanks JTContinental for managing!
These SPs are a highlight for me even though I have a pretty scratchy track record so appreciate all the volunteer effort that goes into making them fun.
by shmrck14 I waffled between Raducanu and Vekic, but ultimately went with Raducanu with very little confidence. Always fun to play and haven't made it to day 7 in a long time. Thanks to the mods!
by ponchi101 Look at the bottom draw: Qualifier, unseeded, #7, #19. Those are the QF's.
Picking matches to reach that line up is simply impossible. This SP was/is insane.
Let's see what the top side produces.
by ptmcmahon Yeah Vekic has burned me multiple times and is pretty much someone I could never make myself pick again.

this was my position exactly! Wanted to pick Vekic but just couldn't make myself do it, but thought Raducanu had a lot of risk also. Oh well, it's been fun, and agree, thanks much to the moderators!
by JTContinental TMQ wasn't expecting to be done with his job so early this time, but I'll be back to hit you one more time with the weight of your awful decisions in our fornight closing STANK or DANK!

this made me hard-cackle twice. Congrats! And luckily by design, you don't have to pick Vekic ever again!
by tennisbrp Win by Vekic die by Vekic. I was in good shape for the semis and final but relying on Lulu Sun and Krejcikova to get me there was not going to be likely
by ponchi101 Still, a great run. I will award your plate ASAP.

With Krejcikova winning and having Paolini and Rybakina left in my draw I would have gone Paolini then Rybakina. I had joy I had fun but I lost with Lulu Sun.
