by ashkor87 Bencic Andreescu is fascinating! Last time they met, Bencic had a chance to win but took her foot off the gas...this time, clay..suits Andreescu's game better but her actual experience is limited . I love both of them so I don't care what happens but it will tell me something about where Andreescu is..bencic is pretty much an open book to all of us by now...

by ashkor87 Muchova has a good chance against Sakkari..who played a pretty loose/shoddy match in the first round, and anyway melts down when she is about to win...

by Deuce Frenchman Moutet vs. Nadal in the night match might be kind of 'high voltage'...
Barring injury, Nadal will win the match rather handily - but the loud, very animated French crowd (which sometimes treats the opponents of French players unfairly), in combination with Moutet's volatile character, stands a good chance of creating a very interesting atmosphere.

by JTContinental Petkovic seems to think the point of tennis is to hit everything as wide to the left of the court as possible.

by Deuce Raducanu won the rather benign 1st set over Sasnovich 6-3...
But Sasnovic has jumped out to a rather quick 4-0 lead in the 2nd.
Raducanu isn't moving much now. Could a Medical Time-Out be far off?

In a battle of lefties, Teichmann is about to close it out vs. Danilovic in straight sets.

by Deuce Petkovic straightened out her shots and played a much better 2nd set. She even had a set point. Then Azarenka had a match point. They decided to play a tiebreak for that 2nd set... which Azarenka won 7-4

Meanwhile Sasnovich put the 2nd set away easily 6-1. No MTO for Raducanu - but she did leave the court after the set.
Long game at 1-1 at the beginning of the 3rd, but Sasnovich eventually held serve. This may have been the turning point, as Raducanu had some break points there. Sasnovich then broke in the next game, then held easily... Then broke again, and served it out - 6-1.

Kerber over Jacquemot easily in the 1st set 6-1.

by Suliso Nothing surprising happening so far.

That can be said of almost all the tournament. The Jabeur loss was a surprise because she had been playing well, but she was the #6 seed. Mugu can lose to anybody nowadays, and it was so unsurprising that several people called it.
But, just as I write this: Baez is up two breaks on Zverev. Maybe something strange is about to happen.

by Suliso I'd argue that Jabeur losing R1 was as big of a surprise as one could reasonably expect in the early days. Sakkari losing today would be a surprise as well, albeit a lesser one.

by ponchi101 Or Baez beating Zverev. He is totally toying with him.

by Suliso And indeed out goes Sakkari. Our collective distrust in her ability was well founded after all.

by ponchi101 I was not part of that wisdom. I thought she would go much farther than this. As we were talking about surprises, that one is one for me.

Ah, Muchova strikes in two tiebreaks. Not a terrible loss, but still... Muchova might be just as tough of an opponent for Anisimova as Sakkari would have been.

No medical timeout. :) Raducanu tried to fight but was just outclassed today. Sasnovich played beautifully, controlled the last two sets and played with more belief and clarity than Emma. I think you could tell that Emma doesn't have a lot of experience on clay. Not a bad performance at all, given that she won a set and her opponent just outplayed her, but I'm sure she will be glad to be back on grass.

I really like Sasnovich and hope she can keep playing like this. It was pretty, light, free-flowing tennis.

by ashkor87 Am a bit sad to see the team of Coco-McNally split up...they suited each other, I thought..oh well, who knows what goes on...

by Irena2 Dang it! Baez seeming to unravel, please get to that tie break!! :x

by ponchi101 Hell of a match by Baez. Sure, he lost but the first two sets were very good.
Zverev, to me, remains a mystery. A long exchange at the net, obviously congratulating Baez. He can be so nice on occasions (his speech after losing Madrid), then he does some other stuff.
He told Baez not to worry; he (Zverev) also lost a big match after being up 2-0 (USO final).

by ponchi101 Ramos Vinolas up 2-1 in set against Carlitos. To me, THAT would be a huge upset.

by ashkor87 RV missed an easy forehand at match point ..oh well, I guess that is why he is not a grand slam champion...

by ponchi101 Well, not that quick ;) There are plenty of reasons why he is in no conversation for major titles.
He is one of those solid players that are the artisans of the sport. He does everything well, but nothing is extraordinary. I actually find this people inspirational: they worked hard at their craft and reached a very high level. Just not good enough to be a star.

by jazzyg I have never seen Trevisan play, but her results have been very good lately and she just clobbered Linette, making Jabeur's loss to Linette look even worse.

Would not be surprised if Trevisan reached the semis, although I'm flying blind here because I don't what her game is like.

by ponchi101 Her game is Sara Errani with a good serve and without the obnoxiousness. She tracks everything down, has good legs and speed, and has a smile on her face all the time.
By now, sure, why not? She can reach the semis. If Podoroska did it two tears ago and, if I remember well, Trevisan reached the QF's, the semis in this wide open draw are possible.

by JTContinental No MTO, sure, but Raducanu still took at 10+ minute bathroom break in between sets 2 and 3

by texasniteowl Bencic score over Andreescu looks pretty easy/straightforward...was it?

by jazzyg She was up 5-1 in the 2nd set, lost 3 games in a row and had to go to deuce a couple of times on her serve to close it out.

by ponchi101 Parry follows up her win over Krejcikova with an easy win over Osorio. And Camila is not a player that just rolls over.
Maybe this girl is for real.

Maybe. Sure is a lot of opportunity in that section.

For the most part, yes it was. Bianca was trying to force the issue too much today. Also, and I think this is much more of an issue for Bianca than Belinda, there was no flow to the match whatsoever. Very, very choppy and it definitely played into Bianca's over aggressive approach today. She just didn't get into any groove except for that stretch in the end. Belinda wasn't bothered by the lack of flow, played a very even match, which can be her downfall, she didn't get bogged down by any minor mistake and didn't get frustrated. It was a good win for her.

by Deuce The way that the Alcaraz and Zverev matches played out, it looked as if someone in the Roland Garros administration went berserk at one point in both matches, yelling:
"We CANNOT allow this to happen!! We will lose so much revenue if (Alcaraz/Zverev) lose this early! We MUST NOT allow this!!!!!"
Suliso wrote: Wed May 25, 2022 1:11 pm I'd argue that Jabeur losing R1 was as big of a surprise as one could reasonably expect in the early days. Sakkari losing today would be a surprise as well, albeit a lesser one.
Muchova beating Sakkari is only possibly a surprise because Muchova's been injured recently, and is in the midst of her comeback.
Otherwise, a healthy Muchova beating a healthy Sakkari is definitely not a surprise of any degree. Muchova is capable of beating any top player on a given day.
(And a healthy Sakkari beating a healthy Muchova would also not be a surprise.)

by Deuce Bencic made Andreescu look like she was 60 years old at many points in the match - slow, struggling, sometimes taking one step toward a shot, and giving up...
It was a very one-sided match except for about 12 minutes toward the end. Too little, too late for Andreescu.

It would have been interesting, from a Canadian perspective, to see Andreescu play Leylah - there was lots of talk here about that potential. I wasn't getting excited about it, myself, though. Bianca and Leylah are very different personalities, and I much prefer Leylah.

Leylah, for example, would never, ever do anything like this (below) - which Andreescu did after her difficult 1st round win over a virtually unknown player ranked #170. Yes, it was a 6-0 3rd set - but that came after losing the 1st and just squeaking by in the 2nd.
In my book, for her to be this incredibly arrogant, she needs to accomplish a hell of a lot more than have a good 6 months 3 years ago...

by jazzyg Hey, I didn't realize Andreescu was not one of your favorites.

At least I state why I don't like her...

by ptmcmahon Even if someone more accomplished long term did that, that would be cringe worthy.

by ti-amie Bad move by the reporter and bad reaction by Andreescu.
