by ti-amie Jannik Sinner and Katerina Siniakova withdraw from 2025 US Open mixed doubles
Tuesday, August 19, 2025
Jannik Sinner and Katerina Siniakova have withdrawn from the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship presented by Vital Proteins. The withdrawal comes after Sinner was forced to retired due to illness during the Cincinnati Open final against Carlos Alcaraz on Monday.
Their place in the draw will be filled by Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison, as they were the duo with the highest combined singles ranking that signed in by 10:30 a.m. today. Priority for the alternate was given to those that had been entered by the initial July 28 deadline.
The full mixed doubles draw and the order of play have been updated to reflect the change.
The first and second rounds will be played on Tuesday, Aug. 19, starting at 11 a.m. ET. The semifinals and final will be played on Wednesday, Aug. 20, starting at 7 p.m. ET.
Tuesday's first and second rounds will be played in Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium. Admission to the Louis Armstrong Stadium matches is accessible via the US Open's Fan Access Pass. Through the semifinals, matches will be best of three sets with short sets to four games, no-ad scoring, tiebreakers at four-all and a 10-point match tiebreak in lieu of a third set. The final will be a best-of-three set match to six games, featuring no-ad scoring, with tiebreakers at six-all and a 10-point match tiebreaker in lieu of a third set.
The winning team will receive a $1 million prize.

Caty McNally on how her mixed doubles pairing with Musetti came to be after their win over Osaka & Monfils at U.S. Open
“Sunday I was back home in Cincinnati. My agent called & said ‘You have 60 seconds to tell me if you wanna play with Lorenzo Musetti.’ I was like ‘uhhh… yes.’”

Is this going to be asterisked as a Grand Slam win?

by ashkor87 the only thing I am looking to see is -
does the man matter more or the woman? Does doubles prowess matter? (Pegula, Andreeva are very good doubles players, Rybakina isnt)
by meganfernandez Gotta say, I liked the mixed today a lot and look forward to the semis and final tomorrow. Even the bloopers were fun, like Gael and Naomi getting lost mid-rally and ending up in the same corner, leaving the court wide open. Iga and Casper colliding. I enjoyed a lot of the tennis. The singles players had some incredible passing shots. It was fast-paced, fun, light... hope they include more top-ranked doubles players next time, continue to tweak it. But overall I think it was a success. Packed stands.
by ponchi101 If the stands were full, that is all that matters.
And I do mean it.

Ashe was sold out. They didn't sell tickets to Louis, it was general admission, and it was pretty full. For the regular doubles teams that can participate, it's an improvement - bigger crowds, much more money on the line, not as taxing on the body, good prep for the doubles draw.
by ponchi101 Yep. I am playing mixed doubles and the smart play is to go cross court against NOVAK DJOKOVIC.
Somebody did not read the instructions.

Swiatek and Ruud were down 4-8 in the tiebreak. They will play Collins and Harrison or Errani and Vavassori in the final

Sara Errani & Andrea Vavassori d. Danielle Collins & Christian Harrison 4-2 4-2 at the U.S. Open
The defending champions will face Iga Swiatek & Casper Ruud in the final.
They were actual ninjas at the net today.
On a mission.

by dave g I am hoping that a real doubles team, such as Errani and Vavassori, wins this "tournament" so that the doubles players get a higher percentage of the entrances.

The enormous Arthur Ashe Stadium is mostly full already for the #USOpen mixed doubles, before any players have yet taken court.
Safe to say the US Open is going to be running this concept back in 2026; question is how many of the other Slams copy them, and how immediately.

Real slams: take the rankings, admit top players, supplement with wild cards and qualifiers
This "slam": take the rankings, throw them out, admit only wild cards regardless even if no demonstrated ability, begrudgingly accept the team that won last year and hope they don't win

How can we take it seriously as a grand slam event when they’re interviewing players between sets

Ruud looked like he may have injured himself on that last play. But is OK.
That can't happen. A top player injures themselves during this and nobody will play.

me too..
by ashkor87 If nothing else, players get practice on the uso courts..very valuable..
I bet nobody who played this exhibition will be beaten by some random player in the first round!
by ashkor87 I am sure this is not the result the USTA wanted! But it is the only right one

It was a nice exo.

meganfernandez So cool for Vavassori and Errani to have this kind of an audience. And I dare say this style of doubles, with some singles players mixed in, might be more entertaining to the average fan because it's not as fast. Points last a little longer. There's more scrambling and improvisation.
I think they were smart to roll it out with as many marquee names as possible. They made a big splash, and that sets it up for success in the coming years.

Because, the way I see it, the whole change to the mixed competition was to make it more popular. And if the stands were full, fait accomplie.
by Irena2 Motobass and I just got back from "Fan Week" Saturday afternoon. We went to the Mixed Dubs semis and the final. We enjoyed the event, but it was a bit exhibition-y for us. I agree with Megan, tweaks would be welcome! At least all the current mixed slam champion teams should be invited to play no matter what. Maybe the current top-ranked dubs players as well? Have a round robin? It would have been interesting to see Sinner and Siniakova play, but the risk of a no-show for a top singles player - that seems like it's pretty high and unfair to the doubles player paired with the top singles player. It WAS exciting to see such a big crowd and be a part of it. The crowd really appreciated the best points, and rooted for Swiatek's and Ruud's comeback at the end of the second set in the final with great enthusiasm. We might go again next year. Although I miss the old quallies, straight up, no djs, music, interviews, photo ops, etc, and would prefer to watch the likes of Hsieh Su-Wei or Siniakova paired with their partners when it comes to mixed doubles.

Agree, that goal was accomplished, but should that be all that matters? The integrity of a sport is maintained by putting the best of that sport in competition, and if you don't, it becomes a joke. If it's just about filling seats, they should replace real wrestling in the Olympics with guys in costumes leaping from the top ropes.
by ponchi101 I don't agree that they put fake doubles players; I believe that the singles players that were playing did not really care and were there just to get a little warm up.
I remember when two real singles players played the Olympics and played for real: Roger and Stan got Gold because they played at their real level. Rafa also got gold because he played for real.
So, if doubles players think that they are "real" in a sense that singles players are not, I will believe it when I see a top doubles player go far in a singles draw.

So you're saying that if the top singles players played at their best, they would win, but what we saw was a bunch of top singles players not taking it seriously and using it as warm-up? I don't see how that makes it any less of a joke.

So we are in agreement. It is just that the USO cannot call it a joke, and they did not want to call it an exo, which is what it was.
I don't think that Iga was playing at her top (not that she is good THAT good at doubles because she is not good at the net) and Novak was just testing that leg a bit.
I will believe in doubles' players when I see them also doing well in singles. The sole person that I see doing well in both is Ostapenko; other than that, I am not convinced.

As Floyd Mayweather once said "there are levels to this sh*t". "The bunch of top singles players" is not the same as one of the best ever paired with the player who becomes increasingly better when the stakes are at their highest.
