by ashkor87 Matches today look a bit less interesting that yesterday's...can't seriously expect Pegula to trouble Swiatek, nor Kudermetova t beat Kasatkina...Rublev -Cilic could be the one to see..could be some high quality tennis...

by Suliso I'm going with Swiatek, Kudermetova, Cilic and Rune. Anyone else with brave predictions?

Suliso wrote: Wed Jun 01, 2022 9:09 am I'm going with Swiatek, Kudermetova, Cilic and Rune. Anyone else with brave predictions?
My predictions for today:
I’ll take Majoli and Pierce over Davenport and M.J. Fernandez. I think the encouragement from the hometown crowd for the French women will be the difference.
The Escude/Mathieu vs. Leconte/Llodra match promises to be interesting - not only for Leconte’s lefty magic (if any remains), but also because it’s an all French matchup. I’ll take Escude/Mathieu.
I’m still wondering why these matches are repeatedly neglected in the polls!! :freaking:

In the Junior Girls draw, Victoria Mboko (Canada) is a fine talent - best of the current crop of Canadian girls in my opinion. I hope she does well today.
Annabelle Xu is another Canadian in the draw. I don’t see her as having as successful a future as Mboko. I hope she proves me wrong, though. She’s got a younger sister (Naomi) who really impressed me a few years ago when she was 12 years old... but when I saw her last year, when tournaments resumed after the COVID shutdown, I wasn’t very impressed with her level of progress.

by Deuce Expressive Kasatkina takes the first set over poker-faced Kudermetova - 6-4.
Quite a boring and uninspired set of tennis from both players, honestly.
They should televise this one in black & white...

by JazzNU If Kudermetova doesn't take that MTO at 6-5 in the 2nd, hard to see it not going to a 3rd set. What an untimely break. Clearly it was necessary, she had the momentum in a big way and she interrupted it, but she's going to be thinking for a very long time about whether she could've toughed it out for another few minutes without that additional tape on her foot and gotten it looked at between sets.

Kasatkina having the chance to practice her supremely shaky serve during that MTO allowed her to regain confidence with that stroke and was truly a difference maker in getting through that final service game and giving her that big lead in the tiebreaker.

Kasatkina already won so, the other three:
Swiatek, Ruud, and I say Rublev. Cilic's form has to drop from that level he played against Medvedev. It was way too high for him to be able to repeat.

by Suliso A rather comfortable match for Iga today (6-3, 6-2). Pegula didn't play bad and Swiatek made quite a few errors, but a true danger of losing was never there.

by Suliso With win #33 Swiatek now owns the 13th longest win streak of the Open era. There have been exactly 10 streaks lasting longer than 40 matches.

by ponchi101 That looked harder than the score tells. By now, I say Kasatkina cannot beat her (not enough power), Trevisan the same. Gauff has the power and the range.

So impressive. Iga must be working incredibly hard. Sometimes I think that gets overlooked because we don't see it. We pretty much only see the matches. She iust about to run the table on the clay season. I'd say the final is going to be boring, but it's like watching Federer mow over someone - the genius is the show.

I still give Kasatkina, Gauff or Trevisian a chance, but not a huge one. Looking to one of you guys for the technical matchup. I think you need to keep Iga deep and try not let her go from defense to offense very much, and also play great defense yourself. And have a great strategy. Who fit the bill? Maybe Gauff for her defense, but who's her coach for strategy, and will she be ready to win her first final? I don't think so.

Unlikely, I agree. Overtaking Venus at 35 is better than 50%, though.

I wonder if Iga can break into the 40 match streak. But that stat almost works against her, as you can tell who are the people that are in the lost. That Seles, Hingis, both Williams and other great ones are not there says a lot.

Would you mind clarifying this? There were two Martina's who won multiple slams, and I can't, at a glance. tell which Martina belongs to which streak.

by Suliso All Martina's on the list above are of Navratilova type :D

by ponchi101 Suliso beat me to it, but all of those are MARTINA. Martina, not in full upper case, is Hingis (I did say that Hingis was not on the list ;) ). And, from now on, I gather that we need to add martina, meaning Trevisan.
Sorry for the confusion.

Unless she states differently this year, she's uncomfortable on grass. The Junior win shouldn't be relied on too heavily. Her 2021 Wimbledon result was courtesy of a cupcake draw. From what she said last year, it sounds like she's on it so little, she's not got her footing on it, she was open about not being that comfortable on grass. And if you watched her matches in the lead up tournament, that all played out. She shouldn't have won the match she did (it was either at Eastbourne or Birmingham) and she struggled mightily to just remain competitive with Kasatkina in a 3-set match after Daria played an error filled first set. It was not good. So, for the time being, her form on grass might not be up to par with what it is on other surfaces.

Now, Aga was great on grass, so maybe the new coach will get her up to where she needs to be quicker than her old coach, so there's also that to consider.

by Suliso Grass clearly Iga's weakest surface, but with a good draw I still expect QF's at Wimbledon.

by ponchi101 Rublev/Cilic has ended up being a very, very good match.

Fifth-set breaker! Who do you want to win? I'm pulling for Rublev. (This was before he conceded an ace to Cilic... he checked the mark and saved the umpire the trouble.... in a fifth-set TB. My goodness.)

Nadal vs Cilic would feel so retro. Sascha vs Cilic for a Slam would be something we never thought we'd see.

by Suliso Cilic wins. Got this one right. :)

Suliso wrote: Wed Jun 01, 2022 6:55 pm Cilic wins. Got this one right. :)
Huge missed opportunity for Rublev.

by Suliso It's only the 6th career GS SF for Cilic. Before looking up I assumed there had been more.

by ti-amie Ruud won the first set 6-1. Rune's one game came late in the set.

by ponchi101 Rune making it more competitive in the 2nd. But abusing the drop shot a bit too much.

by ti-amie

i think Rublev is playing the exact same game he was when he burst onto the scene. No adjustments, nothing. Maybe he needs a coaching change?

by ponchi101 He has the same routine, for every shot. Blast the FH, blast the BH, run around the BH if at all possible. He has very little to no variety. At that level, it will take you to the top 10, and then, what is happening to him. No further.

Huge missed opportunity for Rublev.
Missed opportunity for sure. But one he shouldn't have had. Sinner was taking him to the woodshed before he re-aggravated his injury.

by ponchi101 Well, both 19 yo up and coming players lost in the QF's. Not a bad showing, and it looks promising for the tour.

by JazzNU I didn't see the entire Rune vs. Ruud match. Did something happen that caused some strife? Rune's handshake was less than friendly and Ruud's expression was like, "of course you're not mature enough to shake hands properly at the net."

by ponchi101 Rune questioned A LOT, and it was A LOT, of balls, which I think Ruud did not like as he handed him a few close calls (Ruud would have known they were in).
And I know that Rune is, cough cough, a bit of a subject in another topic, but he basically talked to mom non-stop through the match. And I mean, Carlos-Justine non-stop level talking. If Ruud was a bit upset it is not totally uncalled for.

Rune is not going over well because of all that you described plus the handshake after reading through many comments of different posts. Ruud was willing to be a gentleman at the net, and most are saying class act, he had reason to be upset but was willing to set that aside. But for Rune to be like that after showing poor sportsmanship throughout is real special. Many have also correctly pointed out, not the way to ingratiate yourself to the tennis audience when you already have work to do.

by ti-amie Wow this kid is really making new fans isn't he?

I had the match on as white noise so I didn't see anything that happened. I just know that Rune's name is not said "roon" and that one comm was really happy that he was pronouncing it correctly.

by nelslus IN case y'all missed this- Rune also barked at Ruud during a changeover. It was also shown, btw, that Ruud had given Rune a point, where it was shown by the (imperfect?) Shot-Spot that Rune's shot actually had been out.

What a delightful little imp. :gorgeous:

by Suliso Mr Rune seems to be the next incarnation of Mr Hewitt... Unfortunate as otherwise I have a soft spot for Danish players.

by nelslus The irony is, I actually WANTED to like this kid. He's got a lot of talent and creativity. I am sick and tired of hating on these Baby ATP players, and I'd much rather just enjoy watching these damned matches. (At least, I'm truly enjoying the matches of a lot of the new WTA players.)

by Suliso Not many truly unlikeable top WTA players. I just wish it was a bit less of a revolving door situation...

by jazzyg I did not get to watch anything yesterday while on a car trip. What happened to Rublev in the fifth set tiebreak? I was following on my phone and he lost nine consecutive points from 2-1. The AP writeup credited Cilic, but it is incredibly hard to lose nine points in a row. I gather he was not cramping because none of the write-ups mentioned it.

Nothing physical. He really lost the track. Cilic played a very composed TB, Rublev didn't. It was as mundane as that.

Giving credit to Cilic in that tiebreak was appropriate. He was damn near flawless. He played the tiebreak the way he played against Medvedev throughout the match, a level we haven't seen from him in some time. Here are the highlights and a good portion of the tiebreak is shown though edited. Unfortunately you can't grasp all that Cilic was doing, like some of those shots he made were 95 mph, which helps to explain why Rublev had trouble getting it back. But it will give you an idea.

I totally agree with this. I mean, I never want the other extreme again, either. As much as I love Martina and Chris- that kind of domination gets very, very boring (and let's not even go there re: the Steffi years.0 But, while a random scrub winning a Slam can be exciting- I'd like to see some of the women step up and become full champions.
