I agree..only players who qualified for neither the YEC nor Elite, would have had enough down time...

by ashkor87 Women's draw much stronger- not surprising, it is a 500...

by ashkor87 Surprised Woz is not playing...she must be well-rested by now? Would be very interesting to see how Osaka does...some people need match practice, some don't...Osaka is so talented, she probably doesn't....?

Don't forget Davis Cup! And then all the exos!

Good observation on Wozniacki. But she'll play the Australian, surely. Just doesn't want to go Down Under so early. Probably has family holiday stuff and it's too soon.

Osaka is a big and fascinating question mark. Her old hitting partner said he expects her to do very well this year, because she's just better than most women on tour, but who knows if she can recapture the competitive form and mindset right away. I think she could - she knows what it takes. But it won't surprise me if she needs 6-9 months, either.

by ponchi101 How surprised would we be if she wins the Aussie? (Osaka). Mildly surprised? Very surprised? Super surprised?

Mildly, I would say...she is a two-time champion, and trains in Florida, so she can handle the heat...

Also very surprised - only Serena has had the ability to go from zero to Grand Slam Champion that fast. Let's see her play first before we start making predictions about how successful the come back will be. She certainly sounded like she was in a good place at the US Open, but it might be different when she's back in the spotlight.

by ponchi101 I will give her a better chance than any of the not-top-10 seeded players.
But I will be surprised. Not extremely.

I wonder if she is still training in Florida or staying home in California to train.

Well, Wozniacki entered Auckland.

by ashkor87 hope Muchova plays and is fit and well.. it would be very sad if she is off for a while with injury.. some of my favorites are anyway away - Bencic, probably will not play for a while...

by ponchi101 I don't know what is missing from Muchova's game, but indeed her proneness to injury is something that keeps her from advancing. Bad for me, because I love her game. That slice BH is only second to players that have already retired (Barty, and the previous generations).

Good memory. They have played together quite a bit. Nadal’s standby.

Snakes on a tennis court doesn't have the same ring, plus the iguanas in Miami are more entertaining, and less deadly.

by ti-amie The Servebot aka Karolina Pliskova was allowed to do what she loves best - plant herself on the baseline and just throw bombs. Naomi did manage to make her move in the first set but then she decided she was going to try and match Karolina serve to serve. Still it was a three set match and Naomi got valuable in match play. The mental rust was visible.

I felt that this was poor coaching but maybe the strategy was to just get match play in and work out the kinks for the AO - pure speculation on my part.

by ashkor87 Meanwhile Ryba is looking impressive..so is Sabalenka..nice to see them both building up steam...

by meganfernandez In the second set TB of Nadal-Thompson, the server won only 5 of 14 points. Thompson came back from 2-5 and 5-6 (maybe 3-6?) to win and force a third, and then won the match it in front of an Aussie crowd. The point at 6-6 in the TB was insane. So happy for him to get a win like this in his career, even over an aged and aching Nadal. (His hip or leg was bothering him by the third set.)

by ashkor87 aand..Nadal is beaten. well, well..

And Djokovic the same week. All together now... the changing of the guard!

by ponchi101 If we had one dollar for every time we have said the changing if the guard is nigh, I could pay salaries to all of you guys.
And perhaps retire... :D

You can't have MPs if you lost in straight sets, like Novak

by ashkor87 Rybakina looked to be in the zone, everything she did was landing in - Sabalenka was frustrated.. great win for her but can she do it again? Cout looked pretty fast, Rybakina moved better than I remembe her ever doing..

And can she do it for 7 matches? She can, we've seen it. If she was more consistent, she would be #1. Immense power.

by meganfernandez So nice to see Grigor win another title! First since 2017.

by ponchi101 It amazes me that his drought was that long.
I will never understand how come he did not achieve more. The game is so beautiful.

by meganfernandez Does anyone know where to find full WTA match stats? Looking for Brisbane final, specifically. The WTA site only has bare-bones stats, as far as I can tell. I have searched high and low and can't find detailed stats. IBM's stats for Slam matches are readily available, but not SAP's for WTA matches.
