by ponchi101 Ruse and Badosa playing a high qualoity match.
I had not seen Ruse ever before this tournament. Good strokes, but seems like the consistency is not there. Coming back down to earth now.

by ti-amie Comm on Zheng Qinwen's shot that just caught the line "that's just mean isn't it?"

Qinwen wins the match 6-2, 6-1 over Niemeier in 1h21m.

by texasniteowl Svitolina takes the first set. Given Coco's form this summer, not a shock. Let's see how the 2nd goes.

Yes. This is expected. And Svitolina is exactly the opponent she does not need. A wall that gets almost everything back. And that is very aware of that FH.

by ti-amie Badosa really had to fight off Ruse who was wearing THAT KIT winning a tough match 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(8).

I think it's the worst kit of the tournament. Maybe the designer didn't understand NYC in late summer temps or that women's tennis is not a "genteel sport"? (I do love the pleats but that's it).

Coco stepped her game up considerably in the last two sets, but Elian also visibly ran out of gas at the end.

by ponchi101 A good escape. Maybe something that will get Coco going. A come from behind victory may give you a lot of confidence.

by ti-amie Finally a compelling match on Ashe. There's also a noticeable change in how Frances is playing and that means he's listening to David Witt. I don't know if he'll go further but this was a good win for him.

by ti-amie Re Shelton at the end he looked as if he had run out of ideas. He also looked as if he could not compete physically. I think it's time he and his parents had a long talk about hiring a real coach and letting his father be a supportive presence. His father never competed at this level and if Ben doesn't urge him to step aside he might not grow past the level of tennis he's at now.

by ponchi101 I believe the dad is not the problem. Dad seems supportive and low key. Ben is the one that is so focused on "The Show" that he forgets that you don't get points for spectacularity.
And, besides. He lost a close match. He was not blown off the court. There is nothing wrong with the kid. Or his game.

Agree..I hate it..looks like some kind of scale growing on the shoulders

by ashkor87 Overheard Svitolina asking for a Tylenol at the end of the first set..wonder if she had fever..

by ashkor87 Djokovic is going to lose today...his toss is too low and too close to him, Ivanisevic would have fixed it. Popyrin is playing well

Cramps?

by Owendonovan Djokovic doesn't seem terribly inspired as he goes down 2 sets.

by ponchi101 I don't have a font large enough to say it:
WTF?!
(About Djokovic).

Edit. He started the 3rd 2-0. Match over.
(We have seen that movie so many times).

by ti-amie I'm trying to hold out for the Sabalenka match on Ashe. I totally expected the "psych!" move from Djokovic. It's part of his schtick.

by ti-amie Keys is being made to move by Mertens and seems to be able to move forward and back, and chase down lobs.

by ashkor87 Djokovic toss is better now, fourth set..he seems to have corrected it. He will win now...his toss was too low and too close to him in the first 2 sets

by ashkor87 Djokovic really needs to fix his toss..too low again

by ponchi101 I can't believe it. Really.

by Suliso All great runs come to an end some day. Zverev in some trouble too.

by ponchi101 The bottom half has opened for everybody.

by Suliso Sinner is the overall favorite, but I think Medvedev wins his second Slam here.

by Owendonovan What would happen if both players refused to play at this hour? Can they both be defaulted?

Moral is- even the most complete of players needs his serve to work

by JTContinental That was quite a surprise to come home to tonight. Now Sabalenka is looking rough too

by nelslus Y'all, I have said this before, and I will say this again.....many of us pride ourselves on being tennis experts. BUT, from tournament to tournament....we really need to understand that, often, we do not really know a damned thing.

The Roger/Rafa/Novak era is over. LOL, Novak may still win 10 more Slams, for all I know. But, he IS older now, and his body is breaking down on him. He finally won his damned PRECIOUS!!!! gold medal, and maybe he's beyond exhausted after this. Carlos has already had a great career, and one certainly can suppose that he has more Slam and big titles to win. Sinner is very talented, and certainly will win more Slam and big titles. Both of them still have plenty of time to truly dominate, with room at the top for others.

Maybe it's that there is more weird pressure and stress on the players these days, with the constant attention from the internet, social medial, journalists/media hangers-on, etc. Maybe, at least not yet, they do not have the rabid focus that one needs to win big titles so often. LOL, maybe they are saner in that way. Maybe how much you can now earn more easily does take away some hunger.

Who knows. But, IMO, all of this is just more of a crap-shoot.

by JTContinental Sabalenka has turned it around and is now mauling Alexandrova with some brilliantly violent tennis

There is something wrong with Medvedev's serve. And even a very good ground game will not compensate for this against better opponents. If he'll reach QF stage and lose to Sinner, it will be a successful tournament for him.

by Fastbackss I love that when I went to check the scores it showed aryna's match as being today...because it was.

I don't think we pride ourselves of being experts, but we also do not NOT know a damn thing.
We do pretty well in between.
The point of yesterday's loss by Novak is that Popyrin is exactly the kind of player that he would never lose to. It is not as if Alexei is a new force on the tour; this guy has been around and his game is well known.
This is not like when he lost to Rune at Paris; we all thought Rune was a new, real deal (that's another story). What surprised me so much was that Novak was unable to even keep the ball in, and Popyrin was playing spectacular tennis. They all can do it, but not for three sets. Well, Popyrin did it yesterday.
Maybe he will do a Paolini; learn to play better at an older age. But yesterday's match was surprising to me.

OTOH. I did say that I felt that Novak's preparation for the Open was totally wrong (the "not playing other tournaments before" approach). Glad to see that for once, this non-expert was sort of right ;)

by jazzyg That is how Djokovic has been playing all year except for the Olympics. He has played with little intensity and still been good enough to beat a lot of players, but the days of him killing himself to win are over.
