After suitable rest
by JTContinental This week, everyone is eliminated from YEC qualifying contention except Madison Keys, Mirra Andreeva, Jasmine Paolini, and Elena Rybakina. Currently Rybakina is on the outside looking in, which may be moot if Keys doesn't play.
by ashkor87 I love Rybakina but hope she doesnt make it - there has to be some price for all her foolish nonsense with her coach! The court is pretty fast too, compared with the ones in China - as Sabalenka herself remarked last year.. Coco should win again.. Rybakina would have a good shot if she makes it.
But, as I said, I am boycotting this event, it is a travesty to hold it in Saudi.
by ponchi101 Isn't that condescending? A grown up woman gets to choose who will be her business associate, but you disagree. So, she is foolish.
I wonder what people would say if an ATP player would decide to have a relationship with an obvious gold digger. Would we be so judgmental?

??? if that was it, no problem, but it wasnt, she has messed up, clearly. so no sympathy from me.
by ponchi101 We know it wasn't. But as I do not know what kind of relationship they are in, because I am not privy to such private information, I used that euphemism.
My point stands. Judging a grown up woman on her choice of partner is a double standard. Because when Grigor was dating that porn star nobody came to "his rescue". We assumed (rightly) that he was a grown man, capable of making his own decisions.
You either really believe in a woman's rights to run her own life, even if that means self destruction, or you don't. I choose to do so.

Gold digging and abuse are not equivalent, and I think he's her boyfriend more than a business associate, but I do agree she shouldn't be punished for an unrelated bad decision. I'm sure she's paying enough as it is.
Meanwhile, Andreeva bowed out early, giving Rybakina the opening she needs.

by ashkor87 very juicy matchups in the semis.. I would expect Alexandrova to win this event - or Paolini, or Rybakina, or Shnaider..(!).. he he
by ashkor87 seriously, though, this court being quite fast, I do expect Alexandrova to win. we shall see.
by mick1303 There is a reason why Alexandova, while being 4.5 years older than Rybakina, never enjoyed comparable success. Her best slam result is R16 (on 4 occasions), while Rybakina reached this stage 22 times - and on 12 occasions went further. These results just can't give you another conclusion than these players being in the different class entirely.
by mick1303 Overall career win-loss percentage is 57% vs 70%. Clearly a separation here. IMO this puts Alexandrova not just to the lower tier, I would say there is a whole tier of players in-between them.

I tend to agree with this in general, that there is a double standard with emotional abuse. Physical abuse is a different story since most men can overpower most women, but it's certainly possible for a woman to physically abuse a man, too.
We don't give women the same agency as we do men.
This situation is so complicated and messy. I've been in an emotionally abusive relationship, and I appreciated the support of family and friends, but I didn't need to be rescued and I'm glad they didn't overstep. It was important for me to work through it myself with proper support. Perhaps some people need more intervention, but I think only people close to the person can know that.
by ponchi101 Thanks. And my point remains the same.
Elena has said she was not abused. And my point is one of respect. If she says so, and I AM NOT PRIVY TO WHAT HAPPENS IN HER LIFE, I really should take her word.
If I am one of her inner circle and I have seen Stefanos beat her physically or emotionally, then I have a saying. I can declare what I see. But, until then, I believe it is disrespectful to judge her for her choice of coach, business partner or boyfriend, whatever they are.
And, BTW. I believe it is a messy situation. They seem like an odd couple and, in some cases, he has been less than supportive on court. But from there to declaring her a "victim" and him a "criminal" is one step too far for me.

well, of course, Rybakina has accomplished a lot more than Alexandrova, I am not questioning that. I had identified Rybakina as a future champion much before most people - she is a very high class player.. Tier 1. Alexandrova is Tier 2.
I did notice, though, that Alexandrova reversed the result from her previous match against Shnaider - in my opinion (I dont expect anyone here to agree) because that court, Monterrey, was very slow, this one isn't.

Shaui Peng has also said she wasn’t abused, and in general, I don’t think we take her at her word.
Like you said, we don’t have inside info, but a classic abuse pattern is to break free from the situation, but then to eventually go back to it and double down on “it isn’t happening.” We also have video confirmation of him verbally abusing her on court, and the observations of the other women on the your, most who think he is not a very nice guy.
by JTContinental Unrelated, Rybakina’s win over Paolini keeps them and Andreeva all in the mix for the final two slots, although Andreeva would need a wild card in next week’s tournament to earn some more points.
Alexandrova’s win guarantees she will be the 2nd alternate

I don't think these situations are comparable. Shuai Peng was (and probably still is) basically "in custody". Whatever she said on camera shall be looked upon through this prism. Rybakina on the other hand was always free to speak her mind. Which she did and in no uncertain terms.
by mick1303 To me it looks like facts are adjusted to fit a scenario. And other facts, that do not adhere just ignored. For instance, I remember that a while ago (before this abuse story broke) there was a video of Rybakina on the changeover, who said towards her box "just stop talking". Does it sound like abuse victim? To me it sounds like a conversation between people, who are in the relationship and in the stressful situation may lash out on each other. But once the stress is over, they are a team again.

Ok, this statement is full of logical fallacies to me, but not going to try to change your mind.
The flippancy here about this particular topic is a bit disconcerting to me, but I’ll not talk about this again on this forum.

Why?
Because I can assure you that your opinion will be respected, at least by me. And one thing that this forum does not need is self censoring.
You and I may disagree on this subject. But I will never NOT read your opinion. Because through all these years, your thoughts have always proven worthy.
by JTContinental Definitely I do not feel disrespected—if anything I feel like I might be coming off as preachy.

I have never personally experienced anything of this kind but I did feel very early on that Rybakina's coach wasnt respecting her at all. Everythng that happened after, did not surprise me at all. Whether it meets the standard definition of abuse or not, there was clearly something not right there, in the way he was treating her.. especially given that she is a champion and he is... a Nobody, in tennis achievement.
On the other hand, I do agree that it is best not to speculate about the personal issues any player has, we dont know them as people so we should not comment..
