too many errors from Osaka.. not sure about the court yet - it is slow all right but the ball seems to skid off the surface ..

She said it herself. That she would not remain around long if these were the results she would get.
And she is a very good example for when we make those predictions of players winning 15 grand slam, or the hype on Carlitos when some writers said he would win 30. Yes, he will win more. But it takes very little for one of these great players to return to the pack. An injury here that never fully recovers, an off court issue that pulls you off the tour for a few months.
Osaka looked like the clear cut heir to Serena. She looked good for double digits. And now she is losing to the Osorio's of the world in R1 of a surface she was the very best on. A sad story, and a reminder that the Serena's, Steffi's, Martina's and Chrissie's are the exceptions.

the story is not even half done. why are people so happy to see her go? I, for one, certainly hope she gets back to health and fitness.

Nobody is happy to see her go. But, as I said, she herself said that if the results are not there, she will retire.
Of course I would like Naomi to get back to full health. When she was playing well, her tennis on hard courts was superb. But we are talking here about what we are seeing. And she is not the player she once was.

I saw Fonseca play a little during the Golden Swing and thought his game was suited to hard courts but was waiting to see him play on one. I just watched his match vs Fearnley and I think he will be a decent hard court player barring injury of course since he's only 18.

He also speaks accentless grammatical English although he plays for Brazil.

The British player Fearnley was totally thrown off by the crowd and lost focus and the match.

After a nervous start Uchijima Moyuka easily defeats Emma Raducanu in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in first round play.

Most interesting today is Jabeur vs Yastremska...real contrast in styles...Y has been playing well, and Jabeur is..just Jabeur.

Interesting that they have not played before. Yastremska can go off the rails against pushers more defensive minded players, so I expect Jabeur to come through.
